RUNNER’S MOON: Neeallt
Runner’s Moon Series,
Book 6
Contemporary Sci-Fi Romance
By Linda Mooney
Word Count: 68.7K
$3.99 e / $10.99 p

Mitchel Timmons and her friends just wanted to enjoy a day at the park, regardless of the threat of the Arra hanging over the planet, and more specifically, their town. They want to be able to live their lives, despite the warnings. They figure that as long as they’re home by nightfall, they’ll be safe, or so they thought.

When the girls disappear, Mitchel’s father blames the Ruinos, for good reason. He’d heard her frantic phone call and knows it was them who ambushed his daughter and her friends in the park. How can he be expected to rely on other Ruinos to stage a rescue?

Mitchel hates the Ruinos as much as her father does. She never expects one of those aliens to latch onto her and protect her from other Ruinos as well as the Arra when she’s held captive aboard the Arran spaceship. In fact, although she doesn’t want to admit it, she feels safe when she’s around him. Which is why, when she sees the chance to escape, she takes him back down to Earth with her.

Now her heart’s divided between wanting to still hate the Ruinos and caring for Neeallt, who’s beginning to mean a lot to her. Unfortunately, the town is divided between those who support the Ruinos and those who don’t, even though the Ruinos are working hard to blend in, hoping to find their mates among the humans as they try to make an honest life for themselves. Their common enemy is the Arra, who are orbiting the planet and waiting for their chance to kidnap the human females in order to force the Ruinos to mate with them as a way to increase their numbers.

Despite the good the Ruinos have done, the townspeople want the aliens gone, and Mitchel is faced with losing Neeallt or staying with him. Maybe it’s time they both move on from Tumbril Harbor and find some place safer. A place they can call home.

No one was prepared for the Arra’s next move, despite all their precautions.

Warning! Contains Halloween eyes, a giant tin can, oatmeal with sliced cucumbers (or mango), lavender, a blockade and a diversion, that pause-y thing, and one young woman willing to fight the whole town and the Arra for the alien she's come to love.

It’s been six years since the Alien War, when the Gwa showed up to save Earth from the attacking Vokko. When the humans eventually came out of hiding, the Gwa remained, and the Vokko were nowhere to be seen…or so they thought. But just because you can’t see it doesn’t mean it’s not there, watching, waiting.

Vokko attacks are on the rise again, the human race is in danger, and the Gwa have a plan. Though they’ve studied old movies and TV shows, they don’t actually know much about humans, so their idea is to team up with them to battle the Vokko. And Detective Darika Dailey is the lucky guinea pig to test out their new strategy first.

At first Darika doesn’t trust the Gwa, Ahl, who’s been assigned as her new partner, even after he takes on the visage of someone very dear to her from her past. But Ahl grows on her, and the partnership is working, and she’s quickly becoming attached. They both have the same mission in life—to protect and serve. How much time will they have together? How long before Ahl reaches his true death?

However long it is, it won’t be long enough for her.

Warning! Contains foamy medicine, four stages and the five Ws, unintended consequences, an alien werewolf, worldwide devastation, an inner vase, and one woman given the chance to love again but with a creature not of this world.

DERELICT
Sci-Fi Romance
by Linda Mooney

Word Count: 67K
$3.99 e / $10.99 p

Running from an attack by the Alliance and looking for cover, a derelict ship unexpectedly comes into view. JeVit of the Pure takes the opportunity to hide behind it, not expecting to find an open bay door inviting them in. Too late she realizes she should have rejected that invitation.

Centurion Zeke Rossi and his team are in pursuit of an enemy ship when it just…disappears. Spotting an alien vessel they don’t recognize, the Terrans temporarily give up the chase to investigate, and Zeke is tapped to board the ship first to look around. Immediately, his gut tells him something is wrong. It’s not until he enters the spacecraft that his feeling is validated, but he has no idea the worst is yet to come.

The ship seems to be truly deserted, but the two couldn’t be more wrong. When their paths cross, JeVit realizes that although Zeke is injured, their best chance of surviving is to call a truce and join forces. However, trust between enemies proves difficult.

When escape becomes possible, JeVit chooses the path most likely to save Zeke’s life, and hopefully not end hers on sight. But when Zeke awakens, his memories are nothing but flashes, other than the gray-eyed, blue-headed beauty he keeps envisioning. What happened to him? What happened to her? And how does she fit into the puzzle of his piecemeal memory?

Raised to be sworn enemies, the two can’t resist the pull to be together, despite what it means for their future. They’re willing to risk it all, but can they convince the Terrans and the Hafu to unite against a common enemy?

Warning! Contains beef jerky, lessons in swearing, absolute darkness, Vah plus six, trust issues, and one man making the ultimate sacrifice to return to the woman he's come to love when he knows he has nothing left to lose.

Word Count: 67.1K
$3.99 e / $10.99 p

Tired of sitting back while their borders are being attacked regardless of peace treaties signed, Amalt Paya decides to take it upon herself to investigate anyway, in spite of the punishment she knows she’ll face for defying direct orders not to. Her people are dying. What she and her fellow Ree warriors soon discover is worse than she thought. Entire towns are being razed to the ground. But how? And by who? Their enemy is not who they once thought.

Ivan Mandrake, a lieutenant colonel in the United Planetary Forces, is tracking a race called the Ya that is destroying planets. Following the Ya to a planet the UPF isn’t allowed to touch, he and his group come across a legion of winged warrior females. Their orders are to not make contact with the indigenous species of the planet, but the Ya are attacking, which means he and his men don’t have a choice.

The Ree know nothing of the technology the Terrans have, but Paya trusts them to help. Unfortunately, the Ree leaders don’t share that trust for the Terrans or Paya. She’s labeled a traitor, stripped of her title, then sent to the breeding stocks as punishment for the rest of her days. But she’s not done fighting, they won’t break her, and Ivan won’t stop fighting for her.

Regardless of the way her people have wronged her, Paya is still determined to save them from the Ya. With Ivan by her side, her feelings for him grow, and she knows Ivan cares for her, but she’s unworthy now of his love. She’s tainted after what her kind did to her. He’ll have to work to convince her otherwise.

In the meantime, their mission is to save her planet. Together.

GLADIATRIX
Dark Sci-Fi Romance
By Linda Mooney

Captain Rylee Crockett, a member of the Galactic Force, is well-respected among her peers, and damn good at her job. Despite the hurdles of being a female captain, she has a loyal crew who see her as strict but fair, and with the newest additions, her crew makes her the best ship in the fleet.

She’s especially curious about the newest expert on board. Dr. Beck Graham, a xenobiologist who specializes in alien species, specifically the Purej, who the Galactic Forces have been fighting for some time now. When Rylee’s ship is ordered to provide backup for a warship in the middle of a battle with their alien enemy, a mistranslated communique is intercepted, and Beck helps her decipher its true meaning. She fears they’re being set up for an ambush, along with everyone else ordered to assist.

What was thought to be proposed peace talks with the Purej is not at all the situation they find themselves involved in. Rylee’s ship is overtaken, and she awakens alone on an unrecognizable planet, and is soon taken to an arena where it is kill or be killed. Every confrontation becomes a fight to the death, gladiator style—against alien creatures, or other Galactic Force members—purely for their enemies’ entertainment.

If Rylee lives through this, she vows to get her revenge for the devastating number of crewmen she’s lost. And for the man who had given her a glimmer of hope when it came to being loved.

Warning! Contains ancient weaponry, oxygen masks, hostage taking, bad translations, revenge, a top-of-the-line spaceship, a demotion, and two people refusing to give up hope, until they're forced to take each other's lives.

Vergil Ond Hees Perd is tasked with leading a troop to conquer a new planet, and if successful, his crew will be there for a while. Needing a companion to keep him fit both physically and mentally, he’s given the opportunity to bind with a female of his choice, and he’s had his eye on one particular redheaded Terran for a while.

Aliens, menages and winged woman...

Posted by: Shona Husk
It feels like ages since I had a SFR release (checks notes...it has been ages). This release is also an MMF romance (and it's been a long time since I released one of them).

The Precinct One series is set in a fun world where the women have wings and the men don't. I got to re-imagine society--how would it be different and how would it be similar?

Menages became the norm for relationships and cities are stratified with men on the lower levels and women on the upper and everyone meeting in the middle for...er...a good time ;)

There are no humans as it takes place entirely on an alien planet, so if you want to escape Earth for a bit you might like the politics of Velli for a change. You can pre-order HERE and get it 3 days early (22 Feb instead of 25 Feb)

Halle Ish, one of Velli’s elite police Arrows, is shot down during a Precinct One riot. Wounded and unable to fly, she tries to hide and avoid capture, knowing that if she is found by the razor gangs or Clipper Sect they will sever her wings. She needs to get out of Precinct One.

Avin Lent was once a promising medical student, but he started sniffing Mumble to beat the stress and is now the doctor to one of the biggest gangs in Precinct One—while not part of the Clipper Sect, they are just as dangerous. He knows he is only as useful as his next surgery and they would have no qualms about killing him. Only Jarro is keeping him safe.

Jarro Coblic is deep under cover and has been for a year. Immersed in the gang, he suspects his hands will never be clean again. When he finds the wounded Arrow, he knows he can’t turn her over even though everyone is looking for her. With his lover’s help, they hide her and heal her wing. All the while, falling for her. He prays Avin will not crumble and reveal their secret as Jarro tries to figure out a way to get them all out of Precinct One before the Sect and the gangs bring the full wrath of Velli on Precinct One. Tearing the place down can’t come soon enough, but there will be blood before the slate can be washed clean.

Bring It Back(list) TRAPPED ON TALONQUE Alien Sleep Beauty

Posted by: Veronica Scott
I just thought it'd be fun to talk about this one from my backlist. Part of the story is a scifi take on the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale...mixed with a lot of scifi action! Plus I love the cover - it's so hard to find stock photos that resemble the heroes and heroines, much less an alien beauty with lavender hair in braids - but for this cover Fiona Jayde managed it!

The story:
Will an alien sleeping beauty awaken to save him, or destroy everyone around her?
When a Sectors Special Forces soldier and his team crash land on an alien planet, they’re taken captive and given a challenge–win at the violent ball game of sapiche and live. Lose, and they die, sending a mysterious, alien beauty to an even uglier fate. To survive, these soldiers must win the game and find a way to free the dangerous prisoner from her locked chamber.
Nate Reilly and his team are in deep trouble. Prisoners on a backward alien planet, they’re brought before an alien ‘goddess’, sleeping in her high tech seclusion. Nate is astonished when she awakes and establishes a psychic link with him. But her news is not good–he and his men must win a brutal challenge set by their captors, or they will die. She’ll give her aid, but in the end their courage and strength must win the contest.
Bithia sleeps in her chamber, as she has for thousands of years, since her own people unaccountably left her there. Viewed as a goddess by her captors, she must hide her ancient secrets to survive. But only the bravest of men may free her. Can she use her psychic powers to keep Nate and his men alive long enough to help her escape, or will her only hope of freedom die with them?
The excerpt:
He stood on the edge of a high-tech chamber out of place on a primitive world such as this one. Ringing the room were strange displays, blinking lights, roving green beams, unknown instruments. The sophistication of the technology was well beyond anything the Sectors had achieved, let alone the dwellers of this planet. Nate spared only a second to glance at these wonders. His attention was caught and held by what occupied the center of a large alcove directly across the room.
The cubicle was lined in shiny metallic material and from the floor rose a graceful pedestal of the same material, topped with a thin platform at waist level. Neatly arranged on a layer of dark purple padding lay a woman, apparently asleep. She certainly wasn’t from this planet, nor any world known to Nate. This mysterious female had ivory skin with the palest of lavender undertones in her cheeks.
“I’ll be moon-damned.” Thom’s attention was riveted on the sleeper as well. “An Ancient Observer?”
“Can’t be—no one’s ever found actual remains,” Haranda said from the other side. “Although this room certainly suggests a high level of technology, it’s not AO. Another sophisticated, highly advanced forerunner civilization. The galaxy is a big place after all.” Roused from his state of funk, he studied the walls, apparently more interested in the devices and displays than in the woman. “I minored in AO studies at the Academy.”
“I don’t think she’s a well-preserved corpse.” Nate couldn’t take his gaze from her, not even to watch what their captors were doing now. He took himself sharply to task for the lapse. What if we’ve been brought here as a sacrifice? He had to be mentally prepared to fight, not gawk at a pretty girl. But the next moment he found himself studying her again, unable to keep himself from indulging in another view.
The woman was tall, probably his equal in height, definitely humanoid. She lay pillowed on her own hair, a thick, sweeping fall of glorious blue mixed with amethyst purple, set here and there with twinkling jewels. From his location across the room, he couldn’t see whether she was breathing, yet he had a definite sense of a living presence.
Her clothing was a simple, silvery white and lavender sheath, like finely woven metallic thread had been spun to make the dress. Thin jeweled straps held the garment at her shoulders. The finely pleated fabric clung to her curves sensuously. She lay on her back, arms stretched out a little on each side, her graceful, six-fingered hands spread open on the cushion. She wore no jewelry save for an elaborate bracelet on her left wrist, studded with colorful stones whose facets caught and amplified the lights in the main room.

New from Kelly Jensen: Counting Fence Posts

There are over two hundred thousand fence posts between Syracuse and Boston. Henry Auttenberg likes numbers—it’s his job—but he isn’t going to count them all, even if the view outside the rental car is less confounding than the driver, his attractive but oh so obnoxious colleague, Marcus Winnamore. It’s Christmas Eve and Henry would much rather be home with his family. When the blizzard that grounded their flight forces them off the road, however, he’s stuck with Marc until the storm passes—or a plow digs them out.

As the temperature outside plummets, the atmosphere inside the car slowly heats up. Henry learns the true reason for Marc’s chilly distance—he’s not exactly straight…maybe…and he’s been fantasizing about Henry’s mouth, among other things. Confession laid out, Marc is all for sharing body heat…and more. Henry isn’t interested in being an experiment, but as the night and cold deepen, he could be convinced to balance certain risk against uncertain reward.

Theories for Everything

Posted by: Unknown
One of our themes this month on Here Be Magic is fathers. My father is a character with a capital C. The man is a dreamer, a thinker and a creator. He’s responsible for my love of all things speculative, and not just because his bookshelf was stocked with science fiction and fantasy. More, he encouraged me to keep an open mind—about everything. According to him, everything is possible; we just have to figure out how to do it. This includes travel outside our solar system, visiting with aliens, alternate realities, magic, life after death, alternate power sources and nuclear vacuum cleaners. You name it, he’s got a theory for it.

And he writes this stuff down. He has notebooks full of this stuff. Boxes of notebooks. Rooms full of boxes. Yes, I grew up with a mad professor masquerading as a computer programmer, and as I am easily coopted, I helped build many of his theories (or, if you like, participated in much of his madness). I still do. Every phone call usually digresses into a discussion about one of our inventions.

Here are some of them:

The Internal Organ Re-arranger or “TIOR”

After his divorce, I helped him move out of a one bedroom apartment into a house that had a forty foot bass line. A what? Well, you see, he has these speakers, monstrous things as tall as I am. They are made by Acoustic Research, which back when he bought them, would have cost him as much as a small car. (You’re beginning to understand why he’s divorced, aren’t you?) The theory was that if you stood far enough away, you’d feel the bass. Really feel it. So we set up the stereo (before we got the rest of the furniture in the room), put on Pink Floyd’s “A Momentary Lapse of Reason” and waited for the bass to hit us.

It did and it was kind of amazing. We had to perch on the kitchen counter—forty feet away from the family room—but the way the music punched through us is something I’ll never forget. It’s also when we started talking about other applications for sonic reverberation and decided that carefully refined, it could be used to rearrange someone’s insides. If you’ve ever been at a loud concert, you’ve probably felt something like it.

Sonic weapons are mostly science fiction, which is a good thing. The right frequency can have devastating effects on delicate tissue, including the brain and other internal organs. Currently, the technology is mostly being used in crowd control situations. Damage to the eardrums can be enough to disorient and/or incapacitate someone. Less powerful soundwaves can cause nausea.

We obviously didn’t invent these applications, but I do sometimes wonder if the people who did happened to walk past the sweet spot between two distant, powerful speakers and think Oooh…ahhh.

The Board of Directors

Much to my mother’s dismay, neither my father nor I believe in a single god. We don’t really believe in the idea of godhood at all. Not in the usual sense, anyway. We do, however, think the Greeks were on to something.

It’s easy to understand how the Greek pantheon came into being. Myth is a great way of explaining the inexplicable—until we figure out how it actually happened. Dad and I don’t need a theory explaining thunder and lightning. We get that one. And we’re pretty well versed in how we crawled out of the ocean all those millennia ago, grew legs and went around looking for forty foot bass lines. But we’re both fascinated with the idea that there might be something out there, controlling it all.

What if our universe is basically a big snow globe? And if it is, who’s picking it up and shaking it now and again? We think it’s rather impractical to imagine it’s just one being, also a single being is likely to be utterly mad. It’s not good to be alone for too long. So we think there’s a board of directors out there. A group of administrators. They form committees for division of labor—dividing up galaxies and projects. As you know, committees rarely get beyond hammering out what they’d like to accomplish, let alone how they’re going to set about achieving these goals.

This is why we haven’t met the aliens yet.

The Aliens Are Among Us

Tired of waiting for the board of directors, the aliens have been visiting us for years using trans-dimensional doorways—and because a committee would close these doors if they found them, the aliens assume human skins and live among us with mostly peaceful intent.

Our next door neighbor was an alien. He had a wife and kids, but he didn’t understand how houses worked. They kept their living room furniture on the porch rather than, you know, inside the house. And the family had an unnatural appetite for fish and chips. Perhaps their own unique biology needed more grease than the rest of us. The guy also traveled a lot to strange places. Like, most people would go to the city on business, right? Not our neighbor. He went to the country. The way out country, of which we have a lot in Australia.

There are entire alien communities in the Outback. You know this, right?

I could continue for hours sharing our theories, but I won’t. I have stories to write (which may or may not be based on one or all of the above). But before I go, I’ll wish all the dads a happy day on the nineteenth and encourage them to keep dreaming for their kids, and to encourage them to dream with you.

He gambled and won something more valuable than money. He won love.

It started off as a little R&R on a backwater planet. All Ruce Haulk wanted was a place where he could breathe some fresh air, have a stiff drink, and perhaps while away a few hours at a game of chance. He should have known better. Before he's aware, he's embroiled in the middle of a flesh-peddling scheme, and the woman he "wins" is someone he never expected to find.

The moment Remi Clysonne saw the stranger take on Yarnell and his men single-handedly, she knew he was her only chance at escaping. She doesn't blame him when he doubts her claim that she's there to bring Yarnell to justice. What's more, she suspects there may be another reason why he's reluctant to offer aid.

What should have been a brief layover quickly becomes an all-out struggle for survival as Haulk and Remi battle their way out of an increasingly tangled mess. But the secrets they're keeping from each other may tear them apart before they manage to get away from this world and to safety.

Warning! Contains a clothes swap, levitating locomotives, watery soup, a pretty silver star, thousand-degree heat, attack dirigibles, and two people totally unprepared for whatever the future might hold for them.

Should the Alien Be the Love Interest or the Enemy?

Posted by: Linda Mooney
I like to push the envelope when it comes to my sci-fi romances. Although I've had human-looking aliens as love interests, I've also had alien aliens as the hero or heroine. In the case of my Neverwylde series, that includes fur, fangs, and claws. In Captive Surrender and His By Right, we looking at horns and some rather "interesting" physical properties. (There's also the odd shapeshifter, like in my Runner's Moon series, who can seesaw back and forth from human to their real selves.)

So here's the question: does a non-human creature work for you, the reader, as the main love interest? Or should they all be relegated to being the enemy?

Is there an "ick" factor involved if one of the pair doing the horizontal tango doesn't resemble us? Or does it not matter, as long as you can relate to him?

We've grown up in the age of Star Trek, Superman, and Star Wars. With little exception, the good-looking alien hero or heroine from other worlds could pass for one of us. (The only exception to that is Chewbacca, who I always thought of as one hawt furball.)  Our movies and TV shows are filled with aliens, but in every single case where the alien does not look human, that alien is the enemy.

Are you like me, and believe it's time we gave the creatures equal opportunity for some lovin'?

Where it all began. A long, long time ago...

Posted by: Annie Nicholas

Nope, not a Star Wars post.

I am a big fan and I'm seeing the movie this morning, but for my sci-fi week post I wanted to share my love of reading.  This is the first genre I fell for and it nurtured my love of books. I learned a lot from these stories. That the universe is vast and if I could imagine something then it was a possibility.

Now, you're probably wondering if I love sci-fi so much why am I writing paranormal romances. (I do dabble in sci-fi with No Refuge--strong CJ Cherryh influence-- and Boarded--strong Larry Niven influence and releasing in Feb 2016.)

I was introduced into the genre with Larry Niven. My brother lent me his copy of the World of Ptavvs. A fantastic journey through space where Niven explorers ideas like what if humans colonized a world where the gravity was higher or they suffered major windstorms throughout the year. What if we colonized the asteroid belt? You will actually see a lot of his ideas on the new syfy show The Expanse.

From here I encountered Anne McCaffery.  PERN! (when will there be a movie??)

I learned from her that you could mix sci-fi with other elements and make something wonderful. She has dragons, singing ships, and psychics powerful enough to cross the galaxy. Best part? She writes strong female characters. Great for the young women in your life.

Once I read all of Anne's book, I discovered CJ Cherryh.

CJ has a fantastic world building skill. She has multiple series. All very good. Her biggest influence on me was that even aliens should be three dimensional. They have families, they love, they have different conflicts and stories. She even writes in their point of view giving you a fresh perspective. I love seeing the universe in a not human's eyes. Oh, and she's another one who writes strong female characters.

Hope you enjoyed my walk down memory lane. I know I did. I even picked up a couple of their new books. ;)

If you'd like, I'm running a contest on my facebook page. I'm giving gift cards and print copy books of Scent of Valor (Strong CJ Cherryh infleunce), Bait, and Ravenous.

Love and Aliens

Posted by: Unknown
Combining science fiction with romance might seem like a stretch to some. To the writers and readers of this growing genre, it’s a natural extension of both stories, however. To me, science fiction is often the essence of human fiction. By setting our stories in far flung worlds and pitting our heroes and heroines against inscrutable aliens, we’re holding up a mirror of a sort. We’re showing what it means to be human, to be dreamers and explorers. Why not show what it is to be lovers as well?

In writing the Chaos Station series, Jenn and I endeavored to do just that. Saving the galaxy is all and good if you’re the hero type (born or made). But saving your own heart came sometimes be the more difficult trial.

I’d like to share an excerpt from our upcoming release, Inversion Point (Chaos Station #4). Zed and Felix are on hand to greet the resonance, the fourth species to arrive at the Galactic Hub. It’s a big deal, especially as Zed is the only person able to communicate with them. Unfortunately, he and Felix aren’t communicating that well right now, which is fairly typical—not only for our boys, but for life in general.

Life, and love, doesn’t sit on pause while we save the galaxy. It has to be dealt with at the same time. Combining these elements can make for a richer and more satisfying story, don’t you think?

“I’m really not the best guy to take to this party.”

“You’re my partner, Flick.”

Felix stepped back.

“And Theo is already going to be there. Ambassador means representative, remember? He is humanity, as far as Central is concerned. Can’t go anywhere without Theodor Paredes.”

Had he only imagined Zed inserting the word fucking in between Theodor and Paredes? He sensed Zed didn’t like the guy, but couldn’t put his finger exactly on why. He couldn’t still be upset over the palm-reading thing, could he? Wasn’t like Felix had said “Here, fondle my hand.” It had been innocent. Mostly. On his part, anyway.

“He’s a good guy, Zed. Honestly, the fact he is the ambassador kind of blows me away. It’s like humanity did something right for a change. Theo is honest and compassionate. He cares about people. He wanted to be a soldier for all the right reasons.”

“If you’re such a fan, you should be looking forward to the party then.”

“What is your problem with Theo?”

“I don’t have one.”

“Could have fooled me. Every time his name comes up, you look like you’ve tasted Gagorian tubers. Is it because he’s an ex?”

“No.” But the flicker of tension along Zed’s jaw said yes.

“You know what ex means, right?”

Zed didn’t answer for a moment. Then he spoke quietly, his tone at odds with the tension snapping through the air. “What happened with you two? Why did you break up?”

Felix shook his head, but Zed held his gaze, apparently determined to have his answer. Exhaling, Felix gave him what he was looking for. “I ended it before training finished because I didn’t want someone else to leave me behind.”

Zed winced. Then, he had the gall to ask: “Did you love him?”

“Did you love Riley?”

“N—” Zed’s lips disappeared as his mouth formed a long, hard line.

“She must have thought so to think you were up for a marriage proposal.”

“Riley isn’t here.”

Felix turned away, dismissing a conversation that would take them nowhere useful.

“Are you coming to the party or not?”

“I didn’t think I was being given a choice.”

A sigh. “Just get a shower and meet me back at the suite at 1800. We need to get you measured if we’re going to requisition something for you to wear in time.”

“I already know what size I am. Should be in my profile.” He had put on some weight over the past few months, though, making most of his pants a little tight around the waist. But agreeing to be measured felt like giving in.

“We’re not ordering your suit from Mercenaries ’R Us.”

Felix pressed his palms to his eyes. “Do I seriously have to wear a suit?”

The snick of the hatch sliding closed after Zed’s abrupt departure was sadly undramatic. Letting his hands drop to his sides again, Felix eyed his kick bag, but no rage answered his call. Instead, a sick swirl moved through his middle—an emotion he couldn’t, or didn’t want to identify.

Inversion Point

Book four of Chaos Station.

Zander and Felix’s relationship has been to the brink and back: the Human-Stin War, imprisonment and an actual death/resurrection. Zander’s death, to be specific, and the experience has left him…changed. The mysterious race known as the Guardians chose to revive him and appointed him as their emissary. A high honor, but he could do without the group of would-be cultists following him around the galaxy.

When a recently discovered species destroys a stin probe, Zander’s new role soon commands all of his time and focus. The human ambassador—Felix’s ex-lover, much to Zander’s annoyance—pulls them into strategy talks aimed at preserving galactic peace. Soon everyone is relying on Zander’s Guardian tech to telepathically communicate with the strange aliens.

Only Felix seems concerned with the strain piling up on Zander, but he has his own resolve tested when the very stin that imprisoned him show up to a summit. Zander and Felix will both have to find a way to face their doubts and preserve their love—while preventing another galaxy-wide war.
