A Sense of Place

Posted by: Jenny Schwartz
Wanted: One Scoundrel, my steampunk novella, is set in Fremantle, Western Australia. That made visualising the setting a piece of cake for me. I grew up near there, went to uni not far away and studied...well, what else would a steampunker study? History and Sociology.

But it's not always so easy to visualise the setting of your story. With Google Earth we can "see" nearly anywhere on Earth. What other websites do you use to research a setting?

And some random photos to show off Fremantle (or Freo, as the locals call it).

  1. As yet, I've never had to write about some place I've never been, but I learn a lot about exotic locations from friends like you. :) I've had many long conversations with foreign friends about little known pubs, haunts, and villages.

  2. Tourist websites have heaps of information and pics. Real estate sites for houses. National Park and plant nursery sites to get a feel for local vegetation. Sites for local malls and markets.

Looking forward to reading the steampunk collection. Hope to visit WA for the 2013 conference.

  3. Maria ... isn't it amazing how friendships shrink the world? though sometimes it just adds to the worry. Was terrible to watch the news a few months ago and see the wildfires in Texas. And now it's bushfire season here!

Janni ... woot! It would be perfect if you made it to WA for the RWAus13 conference. It will be my first ever romance convention ... I'm nervous and excited and it's still two and a half years away! LOL Sometimes a writer's imagination is a curse :)
