When I'm not writing...

Posted by: Shona Husk
(yes that is my foot)
I went back to ballet this year after having 18 months off because the class times clashed with work (I'd only been going for a year before that but I'd become hooked). I'd always wanted a pair of red shoes (yes I know the stories, but I love red shoes), so when I saw a pair on line I jumped at the chance to have them.

I'm sure you'll agree they are rather amazing.

A couple of months ago I got my first pair of pointe shoes (not red, but it was still super exciting).
Also my feet... in 4th

3 things I've learned while en pointe

  • Pointe shoes aren't excruciating, more pressure than anything.
  • Pointe shoes are like avocados. Too hard, too hard. perfect! eh too soft...
  • OMG the core workout from stabilising myself in the center.

I did ballet for a bit as a kid (but had my lessons stopped) and only took it up as an adult because I was researching for In The Spotlight which has a ballet dancer hero.

Next year I'll be doing an exam because it's always good to have goals.

What hobby do you have that is something no one would expect?

Not Your Average Vampire

Posted by: PG Forte

See that title up there at the top of the page? Yeah, it’s basically a lie. Because, if there’s anything that doesn’t exist in the world of fiction, it’s a vampire that’s average. They’re all pretty much unique. Seems like everyone who writes in the genre has to put their own, individual spin on everything from sunlight, to garlic, to holy water, to reflections in mirrors, to whether or not vampires have to sleep in coffins And anyone who reads about vampires is likely going to have a very strong opinion about each and every one of those endless iterations.
I once read a series where the vampires didn’t drink blood. They subsisted largely on rare meat. And I don’t mean raw meat either. They cooked their steaks, just not very much. Speaking as someone who hails from a very-rare-steak eating family, that’s straight out heresy.
For the most part, however, I find all these various distinctions kind of neat. It’s fun to discover all the myriad ways in which one set of vampires might differ from another. Although. I have to say, no one’s ever going to sell me on the whole sparkling thing. Just sayin’
One of the weird things that make my Children of Night vampires different from other vamps is cookies. And I don’t even know how that came about, because that was long before the dark side/cookie meme came into being. Or, at least, long before I'd ever heard of it. I was only midway through chapter one of the first book in the series (In the Dark) when Damian suddenly went off script, and I ended up with this:

Finally they were alone. Damian sighed as he let go of their wrists. Reaching for the tiny strings that fastened his kimono he drew the garment around himself and secured it in place. “Now, then,” he said as he threw an arm around each of their shoulders and propelled them from the room. “Let’s go down to the kitchen and have something to eat while we talk, shall we?” Drawing them both even closer, he pressed a kiss against the side of each of their heads. “I baked cookies. Who wants chocolate chip?”

“This is so great.” Julie beamed at Damian as he slid a plate of freshly baked cookies onto the pristine surface of the antique kitchen table. She looked and sounded far more enthusiastic than Marc thought anything about the evening warranted. “I can’t believe you made us cookies. It’s been years!”
“More like decades,” Marc grumbled, resisting the force of habit that almost had him reaching for one. What was the use, after all? When they were children, Damian had made it a point to bake some kind of treat whenever the twins had a play date. It was for the sake of the other children, mostly, but also so that Marc and Julie would feel more comfortable, would know what to expect and how to behave on those rare occasions they were allowed to accept an invitation to play at someone else’s house.
But what was meant to be a comfort had backfired in his case. It had only made him feel more different from the other children, rather than less. The fact that they could eat “normal” food had finally convinced the then thirteen-year-old Marc to try and wean himself from his dependence on blood. After five days, he’d collapsed in the middle of a routine fencing lesson and a distraught Conrad had gone ballistic and had to be talked out of completely disassembling the kitchen. From that point on, there’d been a ban placed on any further attempts at cooking and any foodstuffs other than blood were strictly forbidden from even being brought into the house. It was a line drawn in the sand—very deep, very definite, very distinct. A line Damian had never once dared to cross. Until now. Which only made his actions tonight seem even more alarming.
“Does Conrad know about this?”

It’s actually turned out to be one of my favorite things about the whole Fischer-Quintano vampire family. I love how the never-been-human Fischer twins are often the most human of the bunch. I figure it’s a testament to their awesome upbringing at the hands of Conrad and Damian.
But really, when you think about it, vampires who like to snack on junk food just makes sense, you know? Why wouldn’t they get nostalgic, every now and again, for a taste of home, or for childhood memories? Who doesn’t like comfort food?  Plus, people eat a lot of things that have no nutritional value. Why should that change, simply because they’re undead?
If you're interested in reading more about my cookie-eating (and baking!) vampires, In the Dark will be on sale for only .99 from October 22 through November 5. In the meantime, you can check out my Cooking With Vampires Pinterest board with fun pics of Vampire-themed baked goods.

San Francisco, 1969. Vampire Conrad Quintano has been around for centuries—long enough to know that falling for a human is a terrible idea. Much less falling for adventure-seeking hippie Desert Rose. An even more terrible idea? Agreeing to raise her babies and protect them with his life.
Present day. Marc and Julie Fischer have always known they’re vampires. Raised in virtual isolation, they’ve never known their parentage or their unique status in the world. But once their uncle comes to take them home, the family reunion is nothing like they anticipated and they’re thrust into a world they’re completely unprepared for.

3 Great Movies to Watch This Halloween

Posted by: Angela Campbell
Halloween is almost here — who's excited, besides me?! I could use this opportunity to promote my books, which make great reads this time of year if I do say so myself, but I thought it would be more fun to share some of my favorite movies to watch this time of year for those of you who spend more time reading Netflix descriptions of movies than watching Netflix movies because there are way too many to choose from. I have to start by saying if you haven't seen any of the Universal Horror Movies of the 1920s-40s, you should definitely start there. "Bride of Frankenstein" is my favorite, followed closely by "Dracula" and "The Wolf Man." And the silent version of "Phantom of the Opera" starring Lon Chaney is also tops on my list. Those aside, here are three you might not have heard of that I absolutely recommend.

"Final Girls"

This fun horror spoof from 2015 has a great cast, including Nina Dobrev from "The Vampire Diaries." It follows teenager Max Cartwright (Taissa Farmiga) and her friends after Max reluctantly agrees to attend a special screening of a cult horror film her late mother starred in. The theater accidentally gets set ablaze, and Max and her friends wake up in the woods. Soon, they realize they are living in the movie alongside the characters, including the character played by Max's mom. These lovable millennials must obey 80s horror movie tropes to survive the Jason Vorhees-like killer stalking them, even as Max tries desperately to save her mom's character. It's an affectionate nod to 80s horror movies that is both funny, fun to watch, and surprisingly emotional. Watch it on Amazon video or Vudu, or catch a repeat showing on the cable channel Freeform this month. Scary level: Mild. Laughter level: High.

"Happy Death Day"

I admit it. When I saw the preview for this movie last October, I thought it looked lame. I still went to the theater to see it anyway (don't judge me), and I'm glad I did. It's great! Theresa "Tree" Gelbman wakes up on her birthday, only to be killed by a masked assailant hours later. Instead of dying, she wakes up, destined to repeat the same day over and over again — similar to Bill Murray in "Groundhog Day." Tree is a wholly unlikable character, and you kind of enjoy watching her die in inventive ways (don't worry if you're squeamish - there's no gore, and very few jump scares). But as Tree begins to realize what a horrible person she was, you can't help but change gears and start to root for the girl. Women, especially, will understand a lot of the humor and girl jokes, but overall, this movie is just fun to watch. Watch it on Amazon video or Vudu, or Cinemax this month. Scary level: Mild (it's rated PG-13 after all). Laughter level: Moderate.

"Tucker and Dale vs Evil"

This one stars one of my favorite actors, Alan Tudyk, so you just know it's going to be good. Tudyk and Tyler Labine play a pair of mild-mannered, well-meaning hillbillies on a fishing trip who are mistaken for killers by a group of clueless college students headed to their own cabin in the woods. When Allison, one of the college co-eds, gets startled, hits her head, and falls into the lake, Tucker and Dale jump in to save her, but her friends believe they are trying to kill her. Hilarity ensues. Catch this movie on Netflix, Amazon video, Hulu, or Vudu. Scary level: Moderate; Gore level: High; Laughter level: Off the charts.

HALLOWEEN - THE SCARIEST CANDY

Posted by: Dani Harper, Author
I LOVE HALLOWEEN ... and I can't help but get a little nostalgic at this time of year. Today I'm revisiting a post I wrote several years ago. Hope you enjoy it!

The trick-or-treaters will be out in force in a couple of weeks, and the only defense against the invasion is to lay in a generous supply of Halloween treats. To defend against the danger of eating the candy ourselves, however, my hubs and I start off the month of October with a two-fold plan:

1. Wait until the day before Halloween so we have less time to be tempted by the treats.

2. Do. Not. Buy. Any candy that contains chocolate, so we won’t hear it calling our names in the middle of the night.

By the time the 31st approaches, however, I'll suffer an attack of remorse. I remember what it was like to be a kid, and how we stood on the sidewalk in a huddle comparing our treat bags --- I always wanted to be one of those houses that gave out "The Good Stuff".

Meanwhile, my husband's  reminiscences are much more practical and immediate: he remembers how much he likes Reese's Peanut Butter Cups! Regardless of our earlier plans to the contrary, one of us always ends up buying chocolate and lots of it. The kids might get some too…

Despite our personal addiction, chocolate isn’t the only enjoyable Halloween treat. I've polled enough people to know there are lots of other favorites out there.

But there are also candies that are the stuff of little kids' nightmares...

For instance, my grandparents seemed to have an affinity for some truly awful "treats" -- licorice diamonds that smelled like bleach, humbugs that lived up to their name, and peppermints that burned your tongue until you cried. My parents indulged their own strange tastes in the form of wax lips and wax cigars, rubbery gumdrops that were fruit-flavored in name only, shiny purple gum that smelled like soap, and candy cigarettes that looked and tasted like chalk.

And for the trick-or-treaters of my generation, there's ONE candy that looms over all...

UNIVERSALLY HATED?

When I was a kid, my treat bag felt like a sack of pebbles by the end of the night. That’s because a third of it was made up by petrified molasses kisses. Oh sure -- the OUTSIDE of a kiss certainly looked cute, with its brightly colored Halloween wrapping. But if you somehow managed to get inside (the paper was inevitably fused to the contents), it looked like a terrible mistake had been made.

The exact color of wet cardboard, there was no coating to buffer this "treat" and no filling to look forward to. Just the taste of pureed tongue depressors with a little scorched sugar mixed in. In fact, I’m fairly sure a secret deal had been struck between candy manufacturers and the pulp and paper industry in 1914 when these things were allegedly invented somewhere in New England.

Why these things were called “kisses” I can’t imagine. A kiss is something gentle, soft and pleasant. A molasses kiss usually had the consistency of hardened Gorilla Glue to begin with and only toughened with age. And speaking of age, I’m sure that some of the kisses I collected were old enough to be carbon-dated. If the trick-or-treaters didn’t take it all, I personally knew neighbors and relatives who used to keep the candy for the NEXT YEAR. And the next... and the next... (Believe me, I wish I was kidding).

This candy would have made an excellent emergency storage item: It lived forever and it would take an emergency to make you desperate enough to try to eat the stuff. It might be more useful as kindling in a crisis.

However hard a molasses kiss was, at least you didn't have to worry about breaking a tooth on it. You were far more likely to pull out an intact molar by the roots. This was because after half an hour of working the candy around in your mouth, you were lulled into thinking it would never soften up--and that's when the candy would abruptly cement itself around your teeth like some sort of sedimentary mouthguard. You could box or play football in perfect safety, but it might be days before you could pry your jaws apart.

People talk about how things were built to last in the good old days – cars, appliances, furniture, etc. Believe me, some of those Halloween kisses outlived Buicks. In fact, there are likely thousands of the fossilized things still lurking in china cabinets, upper kitchen cupboards, dusty candy dishes on mantels and boxes in the attic all over the country. Lying in wait like the undead, just waiting to be reanimated...

A few years ago, I ran across a forgotten cookie jar in the back of a cupboard when we were cleaning out a relative's house. The sight of the happy little Halloween wrappers gave me a wonderful burst of nostalgia – then a quick shake of the ceramic container broke the spell. The contents sounded like #3 gravel in a jar...

Acting quickly, I dumped the kisses into a bag, ran outside and threw them into the burn pile like a hobbit throwing a ring into the fires of Mordor.

“Hey, is that candy?” called a cousin.

"That's exactly what it wants you to think,” I said, watching to make sure the flames eventually consumed every last one. “I’m saving us.”

He just shrugged. “You gals take dieting way too seriously.”

You bet I do. In fact, I’m going to go buy some nice, safe fun-size chocolate bars right now!

YOUR TURN!
I'd love to hear from you! Here are some ideas for comments:
  • What were your favorite Halloween treats as a kid?
  • What candy do you like now? (Translation: What do you steal from your kids' treat bags?)
  • What do you like to give out on Halloween night?
  • Did the infamous molasses kiss play a role in your childhood trick or treating?
  • Is there anyone out there who actually likes them? (There MUST be - this candy is still made!)
