Worldbuilding for the Family Pride Shifter Romance Series

Posted by: Deborah A Bailey

When I got the idea for my shifter romance seriesFamily Pride, I was inspired by the TV show, Bewitched.

It featured Samantha, a witch with many magical powers. She falls in love with an average guy and lives in the suburbs. Samantha gives up her status for love—though in spite of her husband Darrin’s desire that she give up using witchcraft, she never completely lives a normal, average life. Relatives and friends pop in and out, and eventually the children are born with powers as well.

The premise of the series is that there's a magical world interconnected with the normal human world. This is the basis of countless fantasy stories, and in them often the human world has no idea of the magical world in their midst.

When I wrote Family Pride: Love and Challenges, I wanted to flip the script. What would happen if a human started dating a lion shapeshifter? She would have to learn to navigate his world, instead of the other way around.

But in the Family Pride fantasy world, the shifters are living the regular, suburban life. They have their own customs and conventions, but they’re also under the radar as far as the rest of the world is concerned. Like Samantha, they have powers and rituals, but they have to keep everything under wraps so that the human population doesn’t discover that they exist.

I did some research on lions and their behavior, then added a few twists for the shifter version. For instance, there are challenges for domination and control—which figure into the plot of book 1. The shifters group themselves into prides, which are made up of extended families. So, there is a normal world on one side, and the fantasy world on the other and Mac and Zora have to balance between the two.

In Family Pride: Blood Fever, Mac hints that other magical creatures exist in the everyday world (in addition to shapeshifters). I didn't go into any detail about the other magical beings, but maybe I will one day.

In the series, I wanted to show that "normal" depends on how you define it. There are all kinds of worlds intersecting all the time, and what you see on the surface doesn’t tell the whole story.

January Vignette - "Wolf Moon" by Linda Mooney

Posted by: Linda Mooney

This year, every month I'll be posting a little vignette (sci-fi, paranormal, or fantasy-based) involving the moon for that month.

Here's my January vignette entitled "Wolf Moon"

* * *

January, the Wolf Moon

“I heard some people say it’s called a Wolf Moon,” Arlene told him. She looked up at the bright, almost too shiny orb hanging in the night sky. “I guess that means it’s meant for wolves.”

“I heard that, too, but it’s all hogwash,” Derris grumbled. “Hurry up before someone sees us!”

She stepped gingerly through the frosty grass. Sometimes it crunched under her feet. She whimpered as a shard of ice pierced the thin soles of her shoes and stabbed her toes. She stopped to pull it out.

“Are you all right?” He came back to check on her.

“The grass hurts,” she admitted. “And I’m cold. When can we change?”

“Not until we’ve had our fill. You know that,” he gently admonished her.

“It’s been so long since we’ve—”

            “Shhh. We’re almost there.”

“How much farther do we have to go?”

“Not far. I promise.” Lifting her face, he noticed the frozen tears glistening on her cheeks. He gently brushed them away before kissing her. His lips were amazingly warm, considering the weather. “Come on.”

They continued to make their way through the field, avoiding the road or the cement walkway. She remembered the one time she tried to walk on them instead of the dead grass. She’d fallen and nearly hurt herself badly on the invisible layer of ice covering the street. And more than once they’d witnessed vehicles slipping and crashing into each other, the light poles, signs, and sometimes into people when the idiots tried to drive on the slickness.

“Why do you think it’s called a Wolf Moon?” she asked. Hopefully their conversation would take her mind off of how miserable she felt. She blew on her fingers, but she was barely able to feel her warm breath on them.

“Something to do with the Indians. I think they noticed wolves gathering to howl at it.”

“Maybe they howled because they were cold.” Her teeth were starting to chatter. Shoving her hands under her armpits, Arlene struggled to follow her mate as the wind picked up. “Think it’s going to snow tonight?”

She saw him check the sky. “I doubt it. There’s no clouds. Without any clouds to hold in the heat, it’s going to get colder. Come on, honey.” He looped an arm through hers as they continued. “It’s just ahead. I can see the place now.”

“Are you sure there’ll be something there to eat?” It was becoming difficult to talk. Her lips were numb, and she’d lost all feeling in her feet.

“Yes. They’ll have something to eat. They always do,” Derris promised. His words were slightly slurred, which told her that he was also succumbing to the freezing temperature.

“And after we eat, we’ll be able to—”

“Yes, sweetheart.”

The world was lit with a bright milky-gray glow from the full moon. With snow covering almost everything until nothing remained distinctive under its blanket, it was impossible for her to tell one lump from another.

However, one massive structure loomed ahead. Arlene gave another little whimper, this time of relief. Derris led her straight to the rear of the building where the trash cans were located. Grabbing the lid of the first one, he threw it open and leaned over to take a deep breath. “This one’s full, and it smells delicious.” He tilted the can until it fell onto the ground, spilling its contents.

He was right. The smell of food filled the frigid air, beckoning them with its promise of a hearty meal. Arlene dropped to her knees as Derris shredded the plastic bags. Lumps of mashed potatoes, a few green beans, and beef bones with some meat still attached slid out onto the snow.

“It’s a feast!”

“Start eating,” he ordered her. “I’ll look for more.”

There was more. A bite of egg and toast. Some French fries. The remains of a salad with bacon bits adhered to the lettuce. And two intact biscuits. Half a slice of cherry pie. Most of everything was peppered with coffee grounds, but they were able to brush off the majority of it.

Someone hadn’t eaten every bit of chicken off their order of wings. There were dinner rolls with a single set of teeth marks on them, a little boiled cabbage, some macaroni and cheese, and—

“Look!” Derris held it out to her. Arlene gaped at the two untouched donuts.

“Why would they throw out perfectly good food?” she asked around a mouthful.

“Stuff like donuts grow stale after a while,” he told her. “Nobody wants stale donuts.”

“Oh, but they’re so good!” she argued. “Even cold and hard,” she added, and giggled.

They continued to eat, using the light of the moon and their sense of smell to find the stuff that was still edible, even if it was a single piece of broccoli, a tidbit of a strawberry, or half a slice of cantaloupe.

They gorged themselves, taking advantage of the contents of all three trash cans. When they were too full to eat any more, they stretched out on the hard packed ground, unable to move. Arlene gazed up at the beautiful moon, when she felt Derris’s hand reach out and take hers, giving it a squeeze.

“Happy now?” he whispered.

“I feel like that moon.”

“Stuffed?”

She tried to laugh, but her stomach was too bloated. “I feel like howling at it myself.”

“Why?”

“Because I’m happy. Because now we can—”

A sound coming from the side of the building interrupted them. Derris hissed in her ear, “Hurry! Change!”

She was already ahead of him, shedding her shoes and ragged clothes. He was waiting for her behind the last overturned trash can when the man came outside, brandishing a flashlight and a baseball bat.

“Scott? What is it, Scott?” A woman appeared in the open doorway.

The light played over Derris and Arlene, revealing their locations. They took off, waddling as fast as they could from the roadside restaurant.

“It’s just a couple of damn raccoons,” the man told her. “They got into the trash cans and made a huge mess out here. Damn, if I can figure out how they’re able to knock over those heavy cans.”

“Well, leave it for now. It’s too cold out to do anything about it tonight,” the woman snapped. “Get back in here before you catch your death!”

Eventually, the man turned off the flashlight and went back inside the building. The last thing they heard was him muttering, “I’m gonna hafta put a fence or something around those cans, or those damn animals will be back.”

They waited for the door to close before emerging from their hiding place. Nuzzling her cheek with his snout, Derris motioned for her to follow him.

They left their clothes behind. There was no need to go back and retrieve them. Even if they did, they had no way to carry them. Not in their present shape. But it didn’t matter. They could always find plenty of cast-off clothing people discarded. When they grew hungry again, and could no longer keep their alternate shapes, it wouldn’t be hard to find more.

Derris paused beside a tree and waited for her to catch up. “Warm enough now?” he teased.

She shook the ice crystals from her thick fur. “Mm-hmm, and full as a tick. Where are we going to spend the night?”

“I was thinking about that storage shed about a quarter mile down the road. There’s a little tunnel underneath the flooring that we can use to get inside. We’ll be all toasty and out of the weather. How’s that sound?”

“Will we be able to see the Wolf Moon from inside?” She glanced up to stare at the orb’s intense brightness.

“The shed has windows. I’m pretty sure we can. Come on.”

He turned to lead the way when she stopped him. “Derris?”

“What, honey?”

“Have I told you lately how much I love you?”

He smiled. The moonlight reflected off his mask, making his dark eyes shine. “Tell me again when we curl up to sleep. I want it to be the last thing I hear.”

Arlene nodded and kissed his mouth. And together the two raccoons hurried along the side of the road to find their resting place for the night.

Five Things I Like About Fairy Tale Retellings

Posted by: Deborah A Bailey

When I started to write my Once Upon A Princess series, I researched some of the common fairy tales like Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast. What I found was the original stories were not like the versions we might be more familiar with. Most stories were much darker and a HEA was not assured.

That made me realize that even though they might seem very simple, those stories are anything but. And they're not only for children's enjoyment. Many of them are more unsettling than heartwarming. They're filled with character archetypes and life lessons - which explains why they continue to be popular.

Here are five things that I like about reading (and writing) them,

1. As I mentioned, they have life lessons. Stories can show what happens when people are self-centered or cruel, or what their good deeds can accomplish. There's a lot to learn about how to show up and make your way in the world.

2. The characters aren't perfect. They have conflicts and make mistakes. But that's why we root for the character to get through the obstacles and win in the end. In the original stories they don't always win out (unfortunately) but of course if an author is retelling the story, they can create a different ending.

3. There's magic involved. This is what moves the story out of the everyday and into something unpredictable. Different rules apply so you can't be sure how events will unfold. There are creatures who don't exist in the "normal" world so literally anything can happen.

4. They can be interpreted in different ways. I was quite surprised to find how fairy tales originated and why. For instance, one reason for Beauty and the Beast was to show how a young bride-to-be might not know what type of husband she was marrying. A version of the story from 18th century France was written with that idea in mind. In some cultures the "beast" was the bride and there were other  meanings behind those stories. My biggest surprise was reading about the origins of Sleeping Beauty. I'll just say that it had very little to do with the Disney version!

5. There's transformation. This is probably my favorite part. Characters have the potential to change from one form to another, usually with the help (or hindrance) of magic. The beast becomes a man again, the mermaid becomes human or the puppet becomes a boy. Through change they often have very hard lessons. But that's what readers can relate to because that's also how real life works.

Just as there are countless fairy tales and folk tales, there will always be new ways to retell those stories. I think that's why those stories will always be popular with readers and writers.

Book Cover Design Options for Authors

Posted by: Deborah A Bailey

As I'm sure you know, getting just the right book cover can be a challenge. Unless you can arrange for photos shoots for your book (or the design is being done by your publisher) it can be a chore.

Usually by the time I have an idea in mind, I'm well into my book writing process. On a few occasions I've had the covers designed for me, with varying success. One person who I hired early on created nice covers, but she wasn't always available. Or she'd start working, then some life event would come up and she'd have to put everything on hold. Another did really good work, but he had to be booked several months in advance.

So eventually I started to create my own covers. Sure, there were times I could find ready-made covers that fit my needs. But usually, they weren't quite what I was looking for. It just seemed best to see what I could do for myself, instead of spending so much time searching.

Originally I tried using GIMP, which is free software that is similar to Photoshop. It has a lot of documentation which is always helpful. As with Photoshop it can be used for manipulating photos and for creating artwork.

After a while I decide to give Photoshop another try. I had the opportunity to take some training classes and I started to pick up on the features. Even better, I found a discount code to get the Adobe Creative Cloud apps at a reduced price. That's when I decided to take a few more classes and see if I could become more proficient.

The thing with Photoshop, as with any software, the more you use it the more you'll become comfortable with it. Yes, it has a lot of features that you might never use, but you never know what might come in handy.

So, I experimented without putting pressure on myself to create anything perfect. I also continued to take classes on Lynda.com (now LinkedIn Learning) and Skillshare. (Even if you don’t use the software for covers, you can use it for photo restoration and for designing various projects).

My latest release cover

When I needed royalty-free images I went to Shutterstock and iStockphoto. When I wanted to experiment, I used images from sites like Unsplash and Pexels. If nothing else, working on an art project can be very relaxing – especially if you're doing it just for fun.

That's why when I work on a cover, I give myself time to do it. I also don't put pressure on myself to make a perfect one on my first try. Instead, I give it time to become something that looks good enough to be published. That way it's fun and not stressful. And after writing a book, there's no need for additional stress!

If Photoshop (and similar software options) is still too much to think about, there are also platforms like Canva. They have a host of templates – including book covers – and you can sign up for free.

There are certainly times when I don’t want to add book cover design to my to-do list. But for those times when I want to create my own, it's great to have more choices when it comes to software and images.

If you want to check out the Once Upon A Princess Trio, featuring three paranormal romance novellas, it's available on most online booksellers: https://books2read.com/u/4Dg5xA

NIGHTSWEPT
Fantasy/Paranormal/Time Travel Romance
by Linda Mooney
Word Count: 35.5K
$2.99 e

It's said a witch without a familiar is considered lost, but a warlock without a familiar is deemed soulless.

Yordan Squires has a rather lonely existence. As a warlock capable of time travel, he’d resigned himself to a life of solitude long ago. When he finds someone possessing the magicks like himself, she could be the answer to his loneliness. But it’s too dangerous and selfish of him to ask her to accompany him on his travels.

Ravenelle is a sprite, or so she’s told. She doesn’t know what she is or how she has powers, but when she finds someone who does know, she doesn’t want him to go away. Despite her healing abilities and invisibility, she’s ashamed of the life she has been forced into. Cold and hungry, she’s had no choice but to sell herself, and now she’s in grave danger from the man who owns her.

Yordan vows to protect his Ravenelle. As perilous as his travels are, she would be safer with him than fending for herself. But sometimes trouble follows, no matter where or when you end up.

Separately they are special. Together they are unstoppable.

Warning! Contains changeable coins, a tiny hourglass, a horse barn, invisibility, fight or flight, rocky food, differing norms, and a man who learns what it's like to finally discover the other half of his soul.

Flash Fiction - BONDED, a Paranormal Romance Flash Fiction by Linda Mooney

Posted by: Linda Mooney

Bonded
A Paranormal Romance Flash Fiction
by Linda Mooney

“Burn her! Burn the witch!”

Peg screamed as she struggled to free herself from the men’s grasp, but they were stronger than her. Stronger and bigger, and hurtful.

It didn’t matter that she swore she had nothing to do with the crops failing this year. They needed a scapegoat. Someone they could pin the blame on. Someone they could offer in sacrifice in order to appease the gods, who’d then bless them with an abundance the following year, and end months of near starvation.

She scanned the square where they were dragging her, hoping to spot the face of the one person who’d come to mean so much to her. Sadly, he wasn’t anywhere to be seen. Maybe because he’d been chased off by the guards after they discovered him coming around to the tiny barred window of her dungeon cell.

Hanging her head, she ceased resisting. It would do her no good, and only end up causing her more pain than she’d already endured. The guards delighted in hearing her protest. Sometimes they made bets to see who could make her beg for mercy the quickest.

They paused in front of a set of steps that led up to a stake. Dry brush already surrounded the length of wood. The scene was set and was waiting for her.

As she waited for them to take her up to where they’d tie her to the pole, she closed her eyes. All she had left to give her comfort was the sound of Alim’s voice in her mind as he spoke to her. Although she’d never been able to see his face, she would never forget his words of encouragement where no hope was left.

“Why have you sought me out?” she asked. “Don’t you know that if you’re caught speaking to me, you could condemn yourself to my fate?”

“The guards do not frighten me.”

“They should. It would tear at my heart if anything should happen to you because of me,” she admitted.

“You’ll make it out of there. Trust me on this!”

How? She wanted to ask, when she realized he was right. Giving a soft laugh, she responded, “Yes, I’ll be taken out of here…on the day they fulfill my sentencing.”

“No, Peg. You’re wrong. I know you’re not a witch. There are many who believe you’ve been unfairly targeted by the burgomaster.”

“Why? What have I done to him?” she demanded hotly through her many tears.

“You’ve done nothing,” Alim assured her. “Nothing but be beautiful and be guilty of brushing off his advances.”

The young man was right. The burgomaster had been trying to seduce her for the past few months, ever since her and her father moved to this borough. The man had even suggested a few private trysts, to no avail. She knew that the longer she continued to keep the man at bay, the angrier he got.

And it was never wise to anger the most powerful man in the village.

Three times Alim had come to her in the dead of night, to spend hours talking to her through that little window. To keep her company. To let her know her life mattered to him, if to no one else. He never told her why he risked coming to see her, or even why he’d sought her out in the first place. After a while, she stopped asking and accepted the fact that he was determined to keep her spirits up, regardless of the outcome they both knew was inevitable.

A loud howl came from outside the walls that buttressed the township. For a few seconds the populace silenced to listen before resuming their screeching and yelling. Peg was aware of someone in uniform coming toward the phalanx of guards surrounding her. The man made no attempt to prevent her from overhearing when he addressed the men.

“We cannot burn the witch today.”

The soldiers made it clear they were not happy with the news. “We’ve been ordered to see to her execution,” one man argued.

“The burgomaster was informed that the forests are too dry. Any attempt to burn her at the stake could result in stray sparks catching aflame outside our walls. If the forest burns, all game will be chased away. And, worse, the outer walls, including our homes and shops, could also catch fire.”

“Then what are we to do?” the lead soldier demanded. “If we don’t follow through with our orders, our necks could be next.”

Another howl, this one closer and louder, resounded through the air. It sounded both plaintive and dangerous.

“Sir, we could have an executioner appointed to cut off her head,” another soldier suggested.

The commander shot that down. “It would end her life too quickly. The burgomaster decreed she must suffer in the greatest way.”

Peg glanced up in time to see a smile cross the man’s face. A smile that left her sick to her stomach. The lead soldier seemed to get the same idea. “What if we feed her to the wolves?”

“I think that’s an excellent idea,” the commander replied. “I will go tell the burgomaster our decision. If he agrees to it, we’ll put her outside the gates. While I’m away, bind her tightly. We don’t want her to make any attempt to run away. We must witness her death for ourselves, to make sure the burgomaster’s wishes have been fulfilled.”

The commander hurried away. In the interim, Peg’s arms were bound behind her back. They pushed her onto the ground to do the same with her legs and ankles, before drawing the rope from her arms through those knots the way a hog was tied to a spit.

She rested her cheek to the bare ground. The dirt was cold. The weather was freezing. The wind was unbearably icy. She had just her shift to keep her warm, but it wasn’t enough. If she was lucky, she would freeze to death before the wolves got to her.

As if on cue, two more howls came over the walls. Although she couldn’t be certain, she would swear each cry had come from a different throat.

The crowd shifted, moving aside to allow the commander to come back through. Stopping in front of the soldiers, the man never glanced at her as he delivered the news. “The burgomaster is agreeable to letting the witch meet her fate with the wolves.” Turning to the crowd, the man raised his voice. “The burgomaster has declared that if the wolves leave the witch be, then she is proven to truly be a vessel of the devil. But if they set upon her, then she can be declared innocent of all charges.”

The proclamation, approved by resounding cheers, almost drowned out another howl that seemed to come directly outside the front gates. The people surged toward the big double doors, ahead of the soldiers who picked her up under her arms and half-dragged, half-carried her to her fate.

Someone opened one of the doors wide enough for two men to haul her outside. They dumped her less than a dozen meters away before quickly retreating back inside the safety of the walls. Peg was aware of more people climbing up to the parapets to stare down at her, watching and waiting to see what would happen.

Beyond the barricade, the winds were bitterly cold. The sun had disappeared behind dark gray clouds, and there was the unmistakable smell that appeared whenever it was due to snow.

Someone above her yelled. She couldn’t make out what they were saying, but she didn’t need to. A howl came from in front of her, from amid the forest. Closing her eyes, Peg prayed her end would be swift.

It happened too quickly for her to react. A pack of wolves descended upon her, surrounding her, growling, barking, and snapping at her all at once. She steeled herself as teeth bit down on the ropes. Their fangs scraped her skin but didn’t pierce it as they chewed on the fibers. The animals continued to prowl around her, alternating between sniffing her and biting at the ropes.

Without warning, several chomped on her bindings and began dragging her into the woods. Peg tried to fight them off, but she knew it was futile.

At the edge of the tree line, the wolves stopped, and she’d swear other wolves took their place. One shoved its muzzle against her cheek, and a low voice whispered, “Scream.”

            She gasped. “What?”

            “Scream, Peg.”

That voice. She knew immediately who it was.

Taking a deep breath, she screamed.

The pack continued to pull her into the cover of the forest. Once they were out of sight of the town, several animals bent over her to concentrate on the ropes. Within seconds, she felt the cords give way. Painfully, she managed to get her arms underneath her as the wolves who’d freed her now crowded around her. It was then she realized they were sharing their warmth with her, as well as protecting her. The beast on her left gave her a strange look. “You’re not afraid of me?”

She answered with a smile. “No, Alim. I’m grateful, not afraid.”

            “Can you walk?”

            “I can try.”

“Good. If you find yourself growing tired, we can stop to rest. It’s going take us a while to reach our den.”

Peg started to reply, when she heard screaming coming from the direction of the village. The shrieks were punctuated with growls and barking. She turned to Alim and asked him an unspoken question. He sighed. “A few soldiers attempted to retrieve your body and take you back. We took care of them. You do not have to worry about them coming after you or finding you.”

Wearily, she leaned against the animal, who nuzzled her cheek with his wet nose.

“You have nothing to worry about anymore,” he answered. “I’ll take care of you. I’ll keep you safe.”

“How can I repay you? How can I thank you?”

“You already have, Peg,” he told her. “You’ve accepted me as I am.”

As she stared into his eyes, his face changed, melted, and reformed, until she was looking at a man’s visage. A man whose emotions lay raw across his countenance.

“Thank you,” she murmured. She didn’t object when he leaned forward and kissed the side of her mouth.

            “Are you ready to go?”

She nodded, wishing he would kiss her on the mouth, but that would come later. She knew it, and he knew it. They were still strangers who’d bonded through a tiny barred window in her dungeon cell. But now they had all the time in the world to get to know each other better.

Alim returned to his wolf form. Grabbing the back of his ruff, Peg got to her feet and allowed him to lead her deeper into the woods.

She never looked back to see what the other wolves had done to protect her. From that moment on, these creatures were her family, and she knew it was a decision she’d never regret.
