Truth or Dare Redux

Posted by: PG Forte

Next week I'm doing a soft relaunch of my novella Truth or Dare--mostly because I'm still not sure how best to go about re-releasing books that have been previously published. But I spent most of this week reformatting all three of the books and, frankly, falling back in love with the characters. So, let me introduce you to a few of them--or reintroduce you, if you missed them the first time around.

The Wild Geese Inn, which is where all the stories are set, is a resort hotel that has seen better days. Located in the fictional town of Atlas Beach (and, seriously, WTF is wrong with my fellow New Jerseyans that no one ever thought to give that name to an actual town?) that once was a Beach Destination of Choice for Jersey Shore-goers but which has now, like the hotel itself, fallen out of favor. And that was before Hurricane Sandy beat the crap out of it. The the town is rebuilding. The hotel? Ah, that's where things get interesting.

"Wild Geese" is a term that was first coined in the 16th century. It initially referred to a particular brigade of soldiers who left Ireland to fight in France. Over the next few centuries the meaning changed--as frequently happens! At first it was applied to any Irish soldier who left to fight abroad, and gradually it began to be used to reference any Irish emigrant.

The Inn was founded by an unnamed ancestor of our protagonists. All we know it that he, or she, came from Ireland, settled in Atlas Beach and opened a hotel. It's possible the pub came first, and the hotel came later, but now it's just one big, sprawling, Victorian-era, conglomeration of accomodations. There's the hotel itself--a grand old building that's big on charm and romance, but totally lacking in modern amenities. Also, it's haunted. There's the attached bar, the only part of the package that works year 'round and which, seemingly, has a boggart attached to it. Boggarts are Scottish, and how it came to live in an Irish pub is anyone's guess. There are also beach cottages that are located on the adjacent blocks, and which--by and large--are only habitable during the summer months.

The property has been in the same family since it first opened, but since it has always been handed down along the matrilineal line, the names keep changing. When the story opens, matriarch Moira Walsh Gallagher has just passed away, leaving the hotel to her three adult grandchildren, Brenda Donovan, Luke Kelly, and Gwyn Carmichael.

Great-grandfather Walsh is the closest thing the family has to a patriarch, and given that his wife kicked him to the curb, he wasn't a very good one. He's the man responsible for the family curse, but since no one believes in the curse anyway, they don't hold it against him.

Gwyn Carmichael is the youngest of the cousins, although given that there's only a six month age difference between Brenda (the oldest) and  and Gwyn (the youngest) with Luke more or less in the middle, that doesn't mean very much. Out of the three cousins, she's probably the one who's spent the most time at the hotel--she and her mom even lived there for awhile when she was a kid. So it's not surprising that she's also the most emotionally invested. Currently, Gwyn's in charge of the hotel itself. She's the only one of the cousins on speaking terms with the hotel ghosts.

Berke Weidman was Gwyn's college boyfriend--the good guy who still managed to break her heart when he left her for his bad boy best friend Cam Steiner. Gwyn hasn't seen either of the men since the super hot, totally disastrous Valentine's Day weekend the three of them spent in one of the hotel's cottages.

But now, it's Valentine's Day once more and they DID NOT just show up at her door again! Gwyn's ready to peace out on whatever plan the two guys have in mind, but it seems the ghosts have other ideas.

Luke Kelly is the middle child of the three cousins. Well, technically, of course, they're all only children, but... Luke's birthday falls midway between the two girls', and "between the two girls" is where he spent most of his childhood (no! NOT like that!) breaking up their squabbles and attempting to keep the peace, etc.

Luke's domain is the pub, and his two bĂȘte noires are the boggart who messes with the bar, and Kristy DiLuca, who messes with his head, and his heart, and always has. Luke's a sadist, and even if Kristy hadn't friend-zoned him back when they were kids, he'd still be reluctant to introduce her to all his kinks.

Kristy has loved, lusted, and longed for her good friend for as far back as she can remember. But Luke grew up with two gorgeous cousins, and Kristy could never believe he could ever really be interested in plain old her. Little does he know, but she'd love for him to do all the kinky stuff he's dreamed of doing. Luckily for the two of them, the boggart's got their  back...or does he? Pinning all your hopes on a mischief-making spirit is probably not the best idea!

Brenda Donovan is the most responsible of the cousins, or at least she thinks she is. But, then again, she also thinks she knows best because she's the oldest. Needless to say, the other two don't take that all too seriously. Still, they happily put her in charge of the business side of things, because that's what she trained in, having gone to school to study hotel management while the others got more hands-on experience.

Like her cousins, Brenda has always dreamed of someday returning to Atlas Beach and running the Wild Geese Inn. But, now that someday is here, she's not sure the three of them are ready for it. The hotel's losing money and unless Brenda can come up with a solid plan, the three of them are going to lose their entire inheritance.

At sixteen Brenda fell in love with a boy named Noah. She he risked everything to be with him, and lost it all when he disappeared. Since then, she's walled off her feelings and refused to take risks. She's pretty sure she's not about to reverse that position and start taking risks now, but she'll need a little help convincing her cousins. That's where Max comes in...or so she thinks.

Max Murphy is a bit of a dark horse. He's working undercover at the Inn. Brenda thinks he's helping her negotiate a profitable sale of the property. Brenda's cousins think he's warming Brenda's bed. There's more going on than any of the cousins realize--but is it destiny taking a hand, or the family curse kicking in? Only time will tell...

Click HERE to read the prologue!

Gwyn has her hands full these days trying to help save the family business -- a quirky hotel on the Jersey Shore. She has no time for romance. But when the two men with whom she once spent a drunken menage weekend show up with a sexy proposition, how can she resist? Berke and Cam might have broken her heart once, but Gwyn is older now and wiser. She's not looking for forever. She just wants a good time. And, after all, it is Valentine's Day.

For Berke and Cam, the weekend isn't just about fun, or adding some spice to their marriage; it's about winning back the woman who got away, and convincing her to give a committed three-way relationship a shot. They each have skills that could help make the hotel a success -- and they're not above bartering to get what they want. but first they have to get past the walls Gwyn's built to keep them out. But while Cam's biggest concern is making sure Gwyn doesn't break Berke's heart a second time, Berke is worried about what Cam will think if he learns about Berke's part in screwing things up the last time around.

Summertime, Scary Movies, and the History of the Ouija Board - by Dani Harper

Posted by: Dani Harper, Author
As a kid, I watched a metric crap-ton (a unit of measurement equal to 1000 butt-loads) of SCARY MOVIES, especially on hot, humid summer afternoons. For me, going outside would quickly incite sunburn, an allergic reaction, or a nosebleed. Sometimes all three. Vintage science fiction and horror flicks on TV were a welcome alternative – and our local station always aired a double-feature.

Even at a young age I noticed that most of the plots were cautionary tales: Somebody gets bored/curious/greedy and they decide to break an unwritten rule. And before they know it, they’re up to their neck in ghosts-zombies-demons-aliens-whatever.

According to Hollywood, one of these unwritten rules is never play with a Ouija board. In reality, however, the origins of this unusual device were spiritual rather than sinister.

Originally called a spirit board, talking board or witch board, it was a popular psychic tool and widely used in the Great Spiritualist Movement of mid-nineteenth century America. It was believed that communicating with the dead could be very helpful, even instructive, to the living, and was considered a wholesome activity by more than a few Christians in that era.

The premise was simple. Participants rested their fingertips lightly on the triangular planchette and it would glide over the spirit board, pointing to various letters and numbers to spell out a message or answer questions.

Tragic and uncertain times—the Civil War, World War 1, the 1918 Flu Pandemic, the Depression, etc—led to increased use of the spirit board and other psychic tools as people searched for proof of an afterlife and a way to connect with loved ones who had passed. First Ladies Jane Pierce and Mary Todd Lincoln each lost young children, and both women held seances and other spiritualist activities in the White House itself in hopes of contacting them.

Initially, these divining tools were simple household items. An upside-down teacup with a handle could be used as a pointer or planchette. An upside-down wineglass or plain drinking glass worked well because you could see the letter it had landed on.

Planchettes could also be used without a formal board, utilizing an ordinary piece of paper upon which you'd written yes and no, and perhaps the alphabet as well. Some planchettes were fitted with pencils and used with a blank sheet of paper, in hopes of achieving what was known as automatic writing

Boards came in a variety of shapes and sizes too, and most were homemade. Some were round like a clock face with the alphabet printed around the edge. Others were oval or square. Some were elaborately painted keepsakes, others rough-hewn and temporary.

It was the patenting of OUIJA (wee-JA or wee-GEE) in 1890 that standardized these tools. Factory-produced, the Ouija consisted of a pre-printed rectangular board paired with a triangular or heart-shaped planchette. The planchette often included a round “window” through which to view the letter it had landed on. As for the unusual name, the patent owner claimed he'd learned it while using the board, and that the word simply meant "good luck".

Luck was certainly on the side of the manufacturer as Ouija rapidly gained popularity as a parlor game. In fact, the cover of the May 1920 issue of the highly conservative Saturday Evening Post featured a painting by Norman Rockwell of a young couple using the Ouija. The spirit board of the previous century had graduated to mainstream culture, becoming a normal American family activity. At parties, it rivaled traditional board games, and by 1966 Ouija outsold Monopoly.

Although some churches began criticizing the use of the Ouija early in the 1900s, it was usually about the waste of time rather than any occult concerns. The board continued to be embraced by the general public. For some it was still a spiritual tool. For most, it was harmless fun. At worst, it was looked upon as hokey and silly.

All that changed with the publication of "The Exorcist" in 1971. The story is about a 12-year-old girl who becomes possessed by a demon after using an Ouija board. And when the movie came out in 1973, the board's new reputation as a tool of the devil was sealed.

"The Exorcist" was an enormous success and is considered a classic. And Hollywood writers have used the Ouija board as a plot device ever since. I was able to put together a list of 25 horror movies featuring the spirit board as a method of summoning evil beings in less than two minutes!

But let's get back to basics.

How does the Ouija board actually work? We know that tiny unconscious and involuntary motions can produce big results, just like a tiny pebble tossed in a pond creates big ripples. We may not think that we’re directing the movement of the planchette—but in most cases some part of us is doing exactly that. Why? That’s harder to answer. Many scientists think we’re unconsciously reacting to suggestions or prior expectations and beliefs. Some people think it’s possible to study the expression of the subconscious mind through the use of Ouija boards.

What if you’re using the board with a group of friends and everyone has their fingers on the planchette? Turns out that human beings, just like some animals, are capable of unconscious and unplanned collaboration. It’s not telepathy. Instead, people can read visual cues from each other—and intuit what happens next—without being aware that they’re doing so.

Still, there’ll always be those occasions where words are spelled out or events occur that simply defy any explanation...

Meanwhile, I find myself once again spending some hot summer afternoons the same way I did as a kidsafely indoors watching scary movies! I just finished a couple of Ouija-themed flicks considered to be among the best: “The Conjuring 2” (2016) and "Paranormal Activity" (2009).

And in the spirit of summer fun, if you happen to be a fan of deliberately bad productions like the Sharknado franchise, there’s a 2020 movie just for you: "Ouija Shark"

I'm not sure I'm brave enough to watch that one!

When fiction becomes fact: Wait…Am I haunted now?

Posted by: Angela Campbell
Sorry for the long lapse in blogging, again. I have repeatedly tried to crawl my way out of the murky depths of grief and depression for the past two years, only to get dragged back under every now and then. Boy, am I messy each time I reach the shore after flailing about for a while. Sorry about that.

Approximately six months ago I decided to start being social on social media again – but only twitter since Facebook overwhelms me, y’all. Not even kidding about the anxiety it induces in me, but I digress. The writing community on twitter is fantastic. In general, I think of twitter as a cesspool for humanity, except for 98% of the creatives on there, who are all very supportive of one another. Anyway.

I’ve been mostly tweeting about cats (I rescue them), podcasts (I listen to them), and my ghost.

Wait, what?

That’s right. I said ghost. Let me point out that I've always been transparent about my love for all things spooky. I've blogged here before, years and years ago, about my lifelong experiences with the paranormal, including my readings with supposed psychics, ghost-hunting with my niece, and the shared experiences I've had with a friend who grew up in a truly scary haunted house which prompted me to contact Ed and Lorraine Warren of "The Conjuring" fame many years ago to help her (that's a whole 'nother story, y'all).

I think I've half-heartedly blogged about my new possibly haunted house before, but since moving into my home almost 2 years ago, I’ve experienced some strange things that have led me to believe I might be sharing it with a spirit or two. I know not everyone believes in ghosts, and it might seem awfully gimmicky if a lady who includes haunted houses, psychics, and ghosts in her books suddenly starts proclaiming she’s haunted, but I’m being 100% sincere when I share the oddities I experience in my home here and on twitter. To be honest, I'm posting them on twitter so I will have a journal and timestamp for some of them — you know, in case I need to seek professional help in the form of a priest or witch doctor or psychiatrist or whatever.

Am I haunted? To be honest, I don’t know. Maybe. Maybe I’m really that mentally ill. I am made up of part Mulder, part Scully, so I want to believe but can’t get past my own skepticism sometimes. I always try to reason away the things that happen, but folks, things are happening more and more now. I also have been dealing with some strange health problems over the past year. I am always sick, feel drained, and while the doctors have diagnosed me with a couple of autoimmune diseases in recent months, the treatments haven’t worked all that well. I’m still always sick and I hate it. It was in the back of my mind but I didn’t want to voice the idea aloud, so of course, my friend did it for me. “What if your health problems are related to Carol?” she said. Carol is what she named my ghost, by the way.

Here is a highlight of some of the tweets I’ve posted about my, ahem, ghostly roommate since I last mentioned it on this blog. If you click on some of these, they open the thread that explains more, but I didn't want to put ALL of my haunted tweets here!

Maybe I should start a hashtag to keep track of these better. Any suggestions? If I start having #DearDavid-type experiences, you’d better believe I am moving as soon as I can figure out how to so please don't suggest #DearCarol to me. Thank you.

I also wish I could say my possible ghost adventures have inspired me to start writing more, but I’m still struggling there. Basically, I hate everything I write and have written, but I’m not giving up. I’ll get back to finishing my next book or screenplay….someday. In the meantime, I’ll continue to pop in and blog here whenever I can, as long as they don't kick me off for being that weird lady who has 14 cats and thinks she's haunted. In the meantime, feel free to send me cat gifs, chocolate, and money as encouragement.

Happy early St. Patrick’s Day, everyone.

It's Almost Halloween: Do You Believe In Ghosts?

Posted by: Angela Campbell

Like many of the people who write in the paranormal genre, October is my favorite month. I love the way the cooler air whisks at my face; the crunch of gold and rust-colored leaves beneath my boots; the smell of pumpkin spice; and seeing fun and scary costumes in stores. Of course, I also love Halloween. I suppose I tend to gravitate toward spooky things year round, but it somehow seems more acceptable in October.

Speaking of spooky, some of the spookiest things that have ever happened to me have happened in graveyards.

Here’s a really strange fact you probably never wanted to know: I actually visit the cemetery a fair amount, having lost my mom when I was 12. My best friend also lost her mom as a young adult, and she’s buried not too far from mine. Now, we regularly go place fresh flowers on their graves. Nothing odd in that, right? Well, except we usually go late at night.

I know. Weird.

We’re both night owls, and I work long hours during the day. It’s not uncommon for us to meet up — safety in numbers — to go to the cemetery at night.

One time we were inside my car when the headlights captured a woman and a dog standing beside a grave. There was something unnatural about them that caused me to immediately stop and turn around. I mean, they had no flashlight and they weren’t near a car. “Did you see a woman and a dog standing there?” my friend immediately asked, but when we both turned back to look seconds later, they were gone. GONE!

Another time, I took my then-teenage niece with me to my mother’s grave, and she carried a voice recorder to try to capture EVPs — electronic voice phenomena — because we’d been watching ghost hunting shows and she thought it would be a fun experiment. Yes, she’s a bit weird, too — probably my influence, sadly. Anyway, she was playing back the sound and had asked, “Is there anyone here?” when a man’s raspy voice replied, "Get out" or “Leave.” I don't remember exactly and I lost the recording a while ago. Needless to say, I drove a little faster than necessary to do just that.

Did I also mention my best friend lived in a haunted house when we were kids? Yes, I have tons of stories I could share on this topic, but I won’t, except to say that the things I experienced firsthand in that house helped convince me there are unexplained things that do go bump in the night.

After reading all of that, it should be no surprise that I believe in ghosts.

It should be even less of a surprise that I enjoy writing about them. I should probably be terrified of ghosts — lord knows my best friend is — but I’m actually quite fascinated by them. And I love Halloween. I have three older brothers who forced me to watch scary movies as a child. I kind of blame them for making me this way. I don’t scare easily anymore, which is a good thing, I suppose, since I’m weird and traipse around graveyards at night.

What about you? Do you believe in ghosts, or better yet, ever experienced one?

What Goes Bump In the Night?

Posted by: Maureen
By Maureen L. Bonatch

Why is it that everything is more terrifying in the dark? Do all of the boogeymen in the world wait for dusk to fall to prepare for an evening of shenanigans? As if they realize that moving the door ever so slightly or messing with that creaky step will be completely wasted if the sun is still up? Do they all wait for the sunset to begin a night of terror and torment, as if an office employee waiting for five o’clock to rush the door?

Creatures of the Night vs. Imagination

As darkness settles and cloaks the world it opens opportunities for ghosts, goblins and all likes of goobers to strike terror into the heart of ordinary day-walking folk. It’s that or it’s the blanket you forgot you hung over the chair that now resembles something unearthly in the shadows.

You can’t suppress the terror that fills you when the linen room closet slowly opens—even though you routinely slam it shut in annoyance when it resists the plethora of linens jammed in there.

However, that’s in the daytime. At night, it must be a spirit bursting from its confines.

Rules of the Night

I can’t attest for too much of the shenanigans of the midnight hours, because as an early bird, spending too much time willingly awake during those hours is unheard of for me. Although I do abide by certain guidelines when the night falls.
  • A blanket serves as a superior shield against most evils. If you choose to stick your leg out to regulate your temperature you’re just asking for it by dangling this fleshy bait.
  • Basements seem to serve as a storage area or family room during the day but once night falls they offer shelter to all likes of entities—get what you need early and get out!
  • If you happen to wake up exactly at midnight go back to sleep fast because that’s like “happy hour” —quick, go back to sleep! Or if nothing else, close your eyes.
  • Otherworldly entities seem to flee when faced with more than one person—don’t go it alone! As soon as you wake your partner to share your distress you know darn well that demonic disturbance will slink back to the shadows.
  • Spiders and centipedes and other creepy-deeks seem to know that this is their time to shine. They gleefully strike terror into the heart of the hapless victim unfortunate enough to choose this time for a toilet break—watch your step!

Nightwalkers

My heroine in my upcoming release Evil Speaks Softly writes during the midnight hours, so of course this opens the door for a darker story than if the setting had been a cheery sunlit coffee house.

Liv struggles with sorting the difference between the perils of her overactive imagination and the spirits that walk the night.
