Writing the Project You Fear

Posted by: Nicole Luiken

I’ve seen this advice a few times: write the project you’re afraid of, the book that you know is going to challenge you to the limits of your ability, the book that you’ll have to level up to complete.
I’m not entirely sure I agree with this advice (more on that below), but this year I’m going for it. I’m taking another stab at my teen novel (working title Replacing the Princess) that I stubbed my toe on last year. I’m determined to work hard and do it justice.
The novel has several difficult bits that I’m juggling: a non-human main character with gender issues who is not entirely likeable (because she’s an assassin), and a secondary viewpoint character who is a Person of Color and, in the current version at least, comes from a fantasy version of a First Nations culture--which means I need to come to a better understanding of cultural appropriation.  I’m also struggling with the ending. I want it to have a strong climax that isn’t an outright cliffhanger yet sets up book two nicely. On top of my usual goals of telling a fast-paced story in an interesting world with dynamic characters… well, it’s a lot. I may succeed. I may fall flat on my face. I may fall flat on my face, then later succeed. We shall see.
I want to grow as a writer. I want to level up. But the idea of being this ambitious for every project is one that I find, frankly, exhausting.
Mostly, however, I think the advice is a bit misleading, because it makes it sound like there are easy novels to write.
True story: my previous big project before this one was supposed to be easy--a rewrite of a trunked adult fantasy novel of mine (working title Path of Power) that I had some new ideas for. I had last worked on the novel eight years before and, while I liked the main storyline, I felt my writing skills had improved significantly. I thought it would be easy-peasy to pull this one out, shake off the rust, and produce a competent, saleable fantasy novel in about six months.
Yeah. That would be a big, fat no. It took me a year, and it was *not* easy. It was every bit as hard as starting a new novel fresh would have been.
Because I had grown as a writer, I wasn’t satisfied with the simple story I had previously told. I decided it needed more viewpoint, including from multiple antagonists (a headache I solemnly swear NEVER to do again), more plot twists, better world-building, stronger characters… better everything really. The book almost doubled in length.
So, in summary, writing an ambitious book is hard. So is rewriting a trunked novel. Pretty much writing any book up to high standards is hard.
If you find this advice inspiring, by all means go for it! But if the thought of it exhausts you, don't feel that you're chickening out or letting yourself down. As long as there is something you love about the current project then it's the right project for you.
 Onward! Persist!

Garenth had been awakened to retrieve an ancient artifact that was crucial to his well-being. He had few memories of what his life had been like when he had been a man. What memories that were left were filled with blood and excruciating pain.

That part of him was over now. The talisman had been taken from its sacred burial place, and it had to be returned as quickly as possible. It was up to him to follow through with his mission so he could return to another thousand years of sleep.

Brielle Van de Camp knew an extraordinary find when she saw it. The small clay figure was the key to a potentially earth‑shattering revelation about a previously unknown time in man's ancestry. She would bet her life on it.

Unfortunately, others had gotten wind of the talisman, and they were equally determined to claim its promise for themselves. If Brielle wasn't willing to part with the figurine, they had no compunction about prying it from her dead fingers.

They never counted on having to face the guardian of the statuette, who turned out to be more than a creature of mythology.

Warning! Contains a magic talking rock, a mother idol, boo-lets, a cell phone app, deadly intruders, a ruthless businessman, a key card, and a warrior trying to cope with an ages-old curse with the help of a woman who must be a blessing from the gods.

Mysterious beasts — Fact or fiction?

Posted by: Angela Campbell
Last night I had some spare time to kill – unusual for me — plus I was trying to think of something fun to post about here today. I turned on the TV and discovered a new show on the Travel Channel on demand called "Legend Hunter" that I am now somewhat obsessed with. What caught my attention was an episode in which the host, Pat Spain, traveled to Wisconsin to investigate the Beast of Bray Road.

My first book, "Cry Wolf" from Carina Press, was inspired by this legend. I've seen countless documentaries about it, read books, you name it. I've always been fascinated by this urban legend out of Elkhorn, Wisconsin, where residents in the 80s and 90s reported numerous werewolf sightings. Back when I was researching my story for "Cry Wolf," I even interviewed some folks who had sightings of the beast in a cornfield. Yes, modern-day werewolves in cornfields. How can you not love a hook like that?

Anyway, Pat Spain set out to determine what the Beast of Bray Road really is, according to science.

I should have turned the TV off right there. And I won't spoil it for you if you're interested in seeing for yourself what he deduced. I admit, he's probably right. But I don't like it.

By day, I'm a journalist, and I try to look for both sides of the story; I dig for the facts to back up claims. That half of me enjoyed the show, I admit.

The other half was gritting her teeth by the end and yelling, "Nooooo! That's a stupid explanation!" at my TV. You can ask my cat because she was not amused by my reaction.

Maybe it's the creative writer in me who prefers to leave the mystery unsolved. As much as I love Nessie and want to travel to Scotland to go looking for her, I honestly would rather not know if there's a lake monster in Loch Ness. It's so much more romantic to believe in the possibility that there's a dinosaur in that lake than to accept the scientific explanations of what Nessie could be.

Some people call me an idiot for that, but I just smile and glance over at my "I want to believe" poster — a throwback from my X-Files fan club membership that I can't bear to throw away.

Is there an urban legend you heard growing up that you still believe in? Share it below. You know you want to...and I want to hear about it!

To Be in a Book Club, or Not?

Posted by: Maureen

Most of us have read a book where the characters are so real to us, and the story lingers so long, that we’d love to be able to talk to others about the book. Kind of like the latest edition of our favorite television show that we discuss the next day at the office.

We may have thought, if only I belonged to a book club and we could dissect this book together. Some people belong to a book club and love it, while others either never tried it, or are never going back. Here’s some reasons why being in a book club might be a good idea, or not.

Book Club- Yay!

Reading Outside Your Genre
This could be a positive, or a negative, reason to be in a book club. It’s wonderful if you discover books that you may have never read otherwise, but if your book club is very restricted on the selection you might not enjoy it if it’s not a genre you prefer.

Share the Story
Reading is a solitary activity. When you really love a book, it’s so fun for the story to live on after you are done reading if you can discuss the characters with other people.

Camaraderie
A book club can be whatever you’d like it to be. Some make it very informal and get together with dinner or drinks to discuss the book. While others might be more structured with rules to follow and perhaps change locations or have each member host.

I was in a book club before until life got too busy for me to keep up with the meetings and the stories. The organizer was a fabulous host who spent a lot of time with structuring the club. The hostess was encouraged to have the meeting themed with the book. I won best theme one year.

Book Club– Nay!

Read What They ‘should’ Read Instead of What They Like
Some book clubs may make their selections based on the what ‘everybody is reading’, literary classics, or choose a book that they feel is intellectually stimulating. This might not be enjoyable if your reading time is limited and you end up feeling as if you must read something you have no interest in.

Strong Opinions
You love the book and the characters—they hate it. Are you prepared to let them crush the characters you’ve come to love? Your comfort with the members of the club, and their personalities, might help you decide if it’s worth the battle.

Pressure to Finish
Book clubs usually have a deadline when you must be done with the book to be ready to discuss it. This could be good in that it makes sure you make time for reading, but it could be bad if you feel forced to finish before you’re ready. It could take a little of the enjoyment out of reading.

There are pros and cons to joining a book club. The most important thing being that it’s comprised of people whose company you enjoy. Whether you decide to join a book club, or not, there’s no reason not to keep reading.

What Are Your Thoughts on Book Clubs?
