NEVER HAVE I EVER
Games We Play, Book 2
by PG Forte

Kristy loves Luke but if anything was clear to her back when they were kids it was that gawky, awkward, tomboys didn't stand a chance with the king of the schoolyard. She watched her older brothers set their caps for Luke's glamorous cousins and get shot down.

So she did what she had to in order to salvage her friendship with Luke. She hid her true feelings and her need for him to take control.

Luke wants Kristy in the worst way -- actually, in all the worst ways: tied up, held down, beaten, bitten, whipped. But he knows he has no chance of ever having her. They'd been childhood friends and sweethearts, until she friend-zoned him in the fifth grade. He knows he can either keep her as a friend, or take her to bed and lose her forever. His biggest mistake--so far--was in hiring her to work alongside him in the bar of the haunted hotel he and his cousins inherited from their grandmother. He knows Kristy needs the money and the job, but Luke's self-control can't take the constant contact with the girl he wants to dominate -- both in and out of the bedroom.

Something has to give -- and soon!

Turning up the Heat-- a Bring it Back(list) bonus edition with Cindy Spencer Pape

Posted by: Cindy Spencer Pape
Among the experiments I tried as a beginning writer was discovering where my comfort zone for sexual heat began--and ended. The far end of that experiment was a trilogy that is by far, hotter than anything else I've ever written. As I considered re-releasing the Immortal Cravings stories when the rights reverted to me, I read through them and decided that I still like them. They're extremely erotic, but the stories hold up. So here they are, once again available from Kindle and KU. These are also the only vampire romances I've ever written, which makes them unique in yet another way. Finally, if you've read these before, they may still hold a surprise. Due to the publisher's rules, super-erotic stories were not allowed HEAs. So I've put those back, meaning most of my readers might like them even more.  The new covers are by Carey Abbott of Safari Heat Author Services. (Author's note--these novels contain a wide variety of sexual situations, including groups, same sex, and BDSM.)

Exploring Ari
Immortal Cravings #1

Ariana Stephanopoulos has led a fairly quiet life—especially for a vampire—until she meets sexy werewolf Jackson Marceski. The instant attraction between them is hotter than anything she’s ever experienced, so when Jack offers to help fulfill all her sexual fantasies, she just can’t tell him no. As Ari and Jack explore bondage, toys and even a ménage, Ari discovers the self-confidence she’s always lacked along with a passionate side that’s sure to keep her lover on his toes.

Dani's Demons
Immortal Cravings #2

Bored with her life in Chicago, vampire Dani DuBois heads to Las Vegas for a little fun. Then she meets demons Kaz Elgin and Ty Cole, and things start to get really interesting. Torn between the attraction she feels for each of them, Dani at first has no idea that the two men know each other. When she runs across the two of them having an argument, she can’t believe they’re both being such men, but they’re both so incredibly hot. After they take care of their rogue demon problem, they decide to take care of Dani—together. Through a dungeon sex club and bondage games in a private room they set out to discover just how much fun three immortals can have in Sin City.

Just for Jess
Immortal Cravings #3

Vampire Jessamy Maitland is a classic workaholic, until her friends team up to buy her a weekend with the incredibly sexy vampire Dermott McMahon on his luxurious private island. Dermott is determined to get Jess to kick back and relax, so he’s enlisted the help of three lion shifter friends.

Jess finds herself faced with three days of no phone, no computer and four sexy, horny males, all determined to wait on her hand and foot and show her a scorching good time. Naked. Together. In ways she’s never imagined. With those odds, what’s a vampire to do? There’s nothing for it but take them up on their offer and discover that sometimes it’s okay to play.

DO WAH DIDDY ME
An Erotic Time Travel Romance
by Linda Mooney writing as Carolyn Gregg

It all began when she found the silver charm bracelet.

As a realtor, Geraldine "Geri" Jones has been trying for years to get the property off her hands. Back in the 50s, it had been called Mabelling's, one of the first drive-in soda and burger joints in the state. But after a calamity destroyed the place and took many lives, the remaining structure had fallen into ruin.

It was while showing the location to a prospective buyer that she finds the bracelet buried between the cracks in the blackened floor tiles. What she doesn't expect is for the bracelet to transport her back to 1959. Back to the diner when it was in its heydey. There she meets Roddy "Hot Rod" Carvelle, with his tight jeans, tighter white T-shirt, and slicked back hair. A man twelve years her junior, who gives her the thrill of her life in the backseat of his baby blue Bel Air.

But the anniversary of the catastrophe that destroyed Mabelling's is fast approaching, and Geri is determined to save Roddy from his final destiny. What she doesn't realize is that she and Rodney could become two more victims of the disastrous event.

When is a Beach Not a Beach?

Posted by: PG Forte

When is a beach not a beach? When it's a projection of your thoughts! Or at least that's how it works out in my M/M fantasy story, Edge of Heaven. My main characters are angels (or angels in training, if you like) stuck in Limbo, a place where what you see is what you get...and what you think about is what you see.

Edge, my viewpoint character (and perpetually bad-tempered angel trainer) has been in Limbo a long, long time--mostly due to the fact that he's really good at ignoring his own issues, but his newest assignment is bringing those issues front and center. In this scene, Edge gets to know his newest trainee a little bit better...

“Is this a bad time?” Matteo asks, showing up on my beach unannounced. He’s gazing at me a little uncertainly, and I guess he’s responding to the look of shock on my face. At least I hope I look shocked. It’d beat looking panicked, disgusted, and dismayed, which is closer to how I’m really feeling. New as he is, there’s no way he should have been able to follow me here, so hell yes, it’s a bad time!

“Time doesn’t really exist,” I say, cleverly sidestepping the question. “And good and bad—those are also illusions.”

“I see.” Matt’s brow crinkles up. He looks around curiously. “So what is this place, anyway, Hindu hell?”

“What? Hell? No, it’s not hell, and…why Hindu?”

“Okay, Buddhist maybe. Same basic philosophy, isn’t it? Nothing you see is real. It’s all illusion, and everything’s the same: good and bad, pleasure and pain, action and inaction, blue and green.”

I blink at that last part. Now he’s got my attention. He’s nuts, but he’s got my attention. “Uh…blue and green?”

A smile tugs at the corners of his mouth. “Well, yeah, you know, ’cause that’s how the world looks, right? From a distance?”

I don’t want to do it, but I can’t help laughing. “Cute, pal. But I’m pretty sure the Divine Miss M’s no Buddhist.”

Matteo grins. “My mistake, then.” He points at the log on which I’m sitting. “May I?”
I’d like to say no, but I’d have to have a reason to do that. A good reason I mean, one I’d be willing to admit to. Which I don’t. “Sure. Help yourself.”

It’s a big log, practically a whole tree. There’s plenty of room for us both. At least that’s what I tell myself. Still, it’s an effort to keep from moving away. I want to slide over to the very end to make sure he doesn’t sit right next to me. Which he does. Big surprise, huh? I don’t want to sound like a wuss or anything, but the guy’s clearly got no sense of personal boundaries. He’s sitting so close to me our shoulders are practically touching. I can feel the heat rising from his skin. It’s sensuous, tempting. I have to fight the urge to lean into it.

“So seriously, what is this place?” he asks, surveying the scenery.

I’m kind of wondering about that myself. I mean, I know what I see when I look around me, but I also know it’s a reflection of my own thoughts. None of it is actually real. Does Matteo see what I see? Or is he seeing something else? “What does it look like to you?”

He glances around again. “Somewhere along the West Coast would be my guess. Northern California, Pacific Northwest, something like that.”

“Yeah, that’s how it looks to me too.” I stare out at the ocean. Sunlight dances on the waves. A couple of gulls fly by. Who’s to say what’s real, anyhow? “This is the beach I used to go to as a kid.”

I point at the rocky shore. “There are tide pools between those rocks. Man, I used to love messing around down there. And over that way”—I turn and point over his shoulder to that place where the beach ends in a fall of boulders and water laps at the base of the cliff—“is the entrance to a cave. It’s hard to find. You can only reach it at low tide. Sometimes not even then.”

“It seems like all of the best things in life are like that, aren’t they?” His voice is low, suggestive. I feel it in the pit of my stomach.

“Like what?”

“Hard to get.” He’s staring right at me. Our faces are just inches apart. I can see the gold flecks in his dark eyes and the fine gold stubble that lines his jaw. My fingers are tingling. It’s like I can already feel the sandpapery texture of his cheek sliding against my open palm. His lips are full, slightly parted. They look soft. They look inviting.

I put my hand in the center of his chest and push. “Tell me more about yourself.”

“What do you want to know?” he asks, lips twitching into a tiny smile. “I swear I’m clean. No drugs, no diseases. Or does that even matter here?”

I shake my head. “It’s none of my concern. And it’s also not what I’m talking about.” My hand is still pressed against his heart. He seems not to mind. I do, but I just can’t seem to move it away. “Tell me how you died.”

And there goes his smile, disappearing in a red-hot instant. He straightens—away from me, away from my hand—and looks out at the water once more. “It was so stupid, you know? So totally senseless.”

Oh crap. There’s an unmistakable tinge of anger in his voice. Eerily familiar, it puts all my nerves on alert. My heart starts pounding. My jaw gets tight. I don’t want to ask it, but it’s my job. I have to know. “What did you do?”

“Me? Nothing. It was an accident.”

“Yeah, I’m sure it was. So tell me about it.”

“Damn car came out of nowhere.”

I blink in surprise. “Car?” Okay, not what I was thinking, then.

Matteo nods. “I was out for my morning run along the beach in Santa Monica. Only it was Saturday and I’d slept in, so it was later in the day than I generally go. On my way back, I noticed the stores along the Promenade were open—which they usually aren’t when I pass them. There was this kiosk with the cutest baby mobile hanging up in it. My best friend and her partner are trying for a baby. It’s been a couple of months, and it hasn’t happened yet. It will, though, you know? I mean, they’ve done all the tests, and there’s no reason it shouldn’t. I wanted to give them something to help keep their spirits up, and this mobile was so perfect I couldn’t resist. I just had to have it. So I crossed the street, and…I was waiting while the sales clerk wrapped it, when it happened.”

“When what happened? I thought you were killed by a car?”

“I was. Driver must have had a heart attack or something. Car jumped the curb and plowed right into us. It was my bad luck that I had my back to it at the time. If I’d had a little more warning, I might have had a chance to get out of the way.”

“You were hit by a car while you were shopping.” It’s not really a question—I’m just trying to wrap my mind around the absurdity of the idea. “While you were buying a gift for your friend’s baby.”

“Yeah. Can you believe it? And now…I’m never even going to see the kid, never know if it’s a boy or a girl or what they name it, who it looks like…”

I nod, but I’m not really listening. To be honest, I’m feeling a little bit jealous. My death was stupid and senseless and largely accidental too. I left stuff unfinished. I left people behind. But there’s one big difference. My death was my own damn fault.

Welcome to the afterlife, where men are men and the angels are fallen.

It was a reckless act of passion that ended Edge’s life and left him in Limbo—literally. Now, he’s stuck here. While most of the other angels-in-training move quickly up the celestial ladder, Edge knows it can never be that simple for him. He’s dealing with issues that are a lot more complicated than a simple lack of closure.

While Edge doesn’t know for sure what it will take to get him into Heaven, there is one thing he’s certain won’t help – his latest assignment guiding angel-baby Matteo Matinucci while the newbie find his wings.

But twenty-something Mattie—sexy, beautiful, recently departed, and openly gay—could turn out to be the answer to all of Edge’s prayers, as well as the fulfillment of all his fantasies, even the hot, sweaty, secret ones he’s never confided to anyone. And by helping to send Mattie to Heaven, Edge just might end up saving both their souls.

THE PAST'S PROMISE
Erotic M/M Time Travel Romance
by Linda Mooney
Writing as Carolyn Gregg
Narrated by Guy Veryzer

She found the ultimate love of her life in another time...and as a man.

Jessie Wharton is a teacher in the twenty-first century. Or at least she was.

Taking her history class to visit the ruins of a historic fort in west Texas, the scorching heat turned her world upside down.

Suddenly, nothing was the way it was supposed to be. She was no longer Jessie Wharton. She was Jesse Webster. She wasn't a teacher. She was a private in the US Army stationed at Fort Callaghan, a completely functional outpost. And it was 1867.

Worse, she wasn't a she any longer. She was a man. A man who was finding himself falling in love with a fellow soldier named Martin Parrish.

Together, they discovered love in the scorching Texas heat, in a time when the merest breath of homosexuality was enough to have the accused whipped to death...if the native Indians didn't scalp them first.

Stripped with the Vampire Pre-order Discount

In a world of dark spells and blood ties where no one is safe, love is the most powerful magic of all.

Shy vampire Charlie never intended to see Vince again after the bad boy human broke his heart. But when Vince turns up beaten and marked for sacrifice to an Aztec God, Charlie will do anything keep him safe.

Vince has never forgiven himself for the lie that ended things with Charlie. The spark between them is as hot as ever, and Vince would risk body and soul to make it a fire again. The Many Degrees of Winter

Posted by: Linda Mooney
One thing about winter in south Texas, you never know if the temperature is going to be freezing or sweltering. The same can go for romance fiction. When you're ready for a love story, you have to decide if you prefer a little cozying in front of a crackling fire, or enough hot action that would melt the snow off the roof.

Let's begin with being cozy. With a ghost.

An old cottage. A cold winter's night.
And shadows on the wall reflecting two bodies in the heat of passion...
except that one of them died over a century ago.

At first, Connie thought the disembodied voice in the room was due to her exhaustion. But when the apparition insisted she was the reincarnation of his lost love, she had no choice but to allow herself to become swept up in the moment, the memories, and the romance.

Warning! Contains an antique tintype and a moment of eternity before a hearth.

Ratcheting it up a notch, let's go a little seasonal with a witch.

Once upon a time, there lived a man with five rambunctious daughters. They were an average American farming family except for one minor detail. The man was a warlock, and all of his daughters were witchlets—half witch and half human.

With Christmas only two days away, Tamberly Blakeney has given up hope of finding her heart's call this year. That is, until Jonathan Mauk walks into the market and into her life. With the magical swirl of a candy cane's stripes, she knows he is the man meant to be her lifelong love. But first he has to pass the sex hex test, which she is sure won't be a problem.

What she doesn't realize is that there is something in Jonathan's past that deeply disturbs her father. And until Daddy gets all the answers, there could be hell to pay.

If you prefer your winter romances from an alternate timeline...

Shelby Fyre owns Fyreside Inn.  It's a respectable bed and breakfast, except for one thing.  There's a strange man appearing in her shower, in her kitchen, and in her bedroom.

The only problem is... Shelby lives alone.

Finally, and I mean finally, there's always a scorching hot Christmas at the end of the world.

If you had only one more day to live, what would you do?

Corwin knows. And no one and nothing is going to stop him from the telling the woman he has loved silently and from afar how much he cares for her.

And don't forget to enter my 12 Giveaway Days of Christmas on my blog! Every day between now and December 24th, I'm giving away an ebook AND a $5 gift card to either Amazon or Barnes & Noble!

It's Win-a-Book Wednesday with...Linda Mooney!

Linda Mooney

I hadn't planned on writing a third book in this series, but too many readers insisted I'd left important story arcs unresolved. After going back and re-editing the first two books (HeartFast and HeartCrystal), I had to agree. But after writing this one, I wouldn't rule out further stories.

HEARTSTORM
Book 3 of the HeartFast Series
A Sensuously Erotic Sci-Fi Romance Novel
by Linda Mooney
Word Count: 65.2K

$3.99

They were the Guardians. Seventeen special men and women with incredible powers, who had sworn their lives to the protection of their galaxy, while upholding the laws of their world.

With the birth of their daughter, StarLight and Master Hunter prepare themselves for their most difficult mission yet - as parents. Until a person from Star's past intervenes, bringing with him chaos and heartache.
Amid this turmoil, an old foe rises. An enemy the Guardians believed they had conquered. An enemy ready to strike again, now that all of Guardian Command is compromised.
* * *
Homecoming

Deceiver wouldn't tell her what the outcome of their mission had been, which both confused and worried her. She was always given a report, good or bad. And if someone was seriously injured and needed immediate medical help, he was very adept at sending ahead the person's specs, so she would be ready to provide expedient care.
But not this time. Other than the cryptic “We're on our way home,” she'd heard nothing. Worse, it was taking them longer than usual to get back, even though the Guardian leader had told her they had sustained damage to the ship, and weren't able to use the hyperlight drive. What was delaying them?
A shiver went through her. A warm tear slid down her cheek. She allowed herself to cry when no one was around to see her. She didn't want the others to see her weakness, afraid it would cast her in an unfavorable light among the superheroes. Which was why she'd done as much crying as she needed these past few days, since the rest of the Guardians had left to pursue reports of pirate activity in the Caperonda cluster. She figured that if she got it out of her system, there would be no more tears left when they returned. No tears for the others to see. Her professional countenance would remain intact, and give them the reassurance they needed from her that they were in very capable hands.
Another tear glided down in the path of the first. Silently, she cursed herself.
Commander was gone. Forever gone. Sucked through that wormhole. That was almost five months ago, yet every time she thought back to that day, her heart caved a little bit more. Just when she had hoped she had turned the corner and was ready to walk the long road of recuperation, something would remind her of him. A look, a sound, a memory, or the mere mention of his name, and her carefully constructed mask would come crashing back down around her.
I think what hurts the worst, the reason why I can't resolve myself to you being dead, is because I never saw you die. Neither did anyone else. One moment you, and Hunter, and Seeker, and Disaster were fighting those pirates. Moments later, the wormhole ate Transport Two, and it was as if you had never existed.
Her soul felt fragile. It had shattered at the news of Commander's demise, and only existed now because she'd somehow managed to hold it together with pieces of determination and strings of practicality. Her last hope at finding some kind of consolation had hung its head in shame and shrunk away to the darkest caverns in her heart, leaving her as barren as a lifeless planet.
Overhead, the enormous bay doors ponderously began to open, sliding back to reveal a cloudless blue sky. Somewhere above Guardian Command, the largest ship in its fleet was descending.
Wiping tears from her face, Devorah sniffed and got to her feet. She pulled on her stoic face, then signaled the emergency cart to hover nearby in the event someone had to be lifted to the clinic.
She heard the big ship before she spotted it. After several seconds, the shiny silver hull appeared, long, tapered, and magnificent looking. Before long, the upper half of the ship came into view. As it always did, the Guardian crest emblazoned on the tail sent a little thrill of pride through her. It reminded her of the miracle that had brought her to Guardian Command, and sealed her fate to become the group's first on-site physician. So far she couldn't spot who was piloting the craft, but it didn't matter. Right now, her primary concern was StarLight and her unborn child.
The ship slowly settled into its cradle before it began to power down. Devorah moved closer, bringing the cart with her, to wait for the hull door to open.
Seconds ticked by without any sign coming from the ship. Frowning, she wondered what was preventing them from exiting. She glanced over at where the communications console was located, and debated whether or not to call over and see if there was a problem, when she heard the familiar hiss of the airlock. The door slid to the side, but no one appeared to be waiting to disembark.
Devorah took another step toward the ship, now that it was safe to approach, when Disaster halted in the doorway. He stared at her for a moment, then walked onto the small platform and took the short flight of stairs to the floor. Her eyes widened when he began striding toward her with an unfathomable look on his face. This behavior wasn't like the Guardian leader. That realization raised her level of alarm.
"What's wrong? What's happened?" she whispered, and glanced at the ship, but no one else appeared to be leaving the vessel. She gave another good look at Disaster, this time with her medical eye. Other than exhaustion, she could see no outward signs of injury.
"Doctor. Dev." His voice was low, soothing. A little smile quirked the corners of his mouth.
By this time, her temper was beginning to flare. "If there's something you need to tell me, spit it out. What's wrong? Is there anyone needing my assistance?"
"Nothing's wrong. In fact, everything's right. I just..." He stopped and took a deep breath. "I just don't know how to tell you this."
"Tell me what?" A thought raced through her mind, and her heart sped up. StarLight and the baby. She had vehemently protested Star going on this mission because of the risk involved, and the possibility of her losing the baby. "Did Star give birth out there? Is she all right? Is the child all right?" She started to advance toward the ship, when a figure appeared in the hull opening. A figure that shouldn't have been there. That shouldn't have existed. That hadn't existed in nearly five months.
Her mouth dropped open, and the blood rushed from her body as Commander walked onto the landing platform, then paused to stare at her. Her mind refused to acknowledge his return, his presence. What she was seeing wasn't really him. He was a part of her fevered imagination. Or a hologram. Or something not of the flesh.
The figure took the steps, his boots making little hollow sounds. At some point, Disaster moved away, giving her room to take it all in. Giving her space to breathe, although her lungs were refusing to cooperate.
            "Devorah."
It was his voice. His face. His eyes that were riveted on her. That thin little worry line he always got above the bridge of his nose was present.
            "Devorah?"
He reached out, and warm hands grasped her arms at the shoulder. This close, she could smell his sweat and the tang of old air that always surrounded them whenever they had spent a long time inside a spacesuit.
            "Devorah, speak to me."
            "Paol?"
"Yeah. It's me. Don't faint on me, woman," he added softly, teasingly. He cupped the side of her face to connect with her, letting her adjust to his touch. Feel him. Accept the truth.
Tears fell over her lower lashes, but she was unaware of them until his thumb brushed one of them away. Carefully, almost fearfully, she placed a hand on his jaw.
            "H-how?"
"Long story. I'll tell you all about it later. But now, I need to get something off my chest."
She couldn't wait for his confession. Throwing her arms around his neck, she lifted herself up on her tiptoes and hungrily pressed her lips to his. His muscular arms surrounded her, the warmth his hard body engulfing her to the point that her mind whispered, It doesn't matter the story. You're back. Another miracle has been granted, and you've come home. My Paol. My love.

In honor of Release Day for Master of the Game, I thought I'd share a little about the game in the title.

The first words I wrote when I began my series of books about demons and angels—The House of Arkhangel'sk, and its m/m erotic romance prequel, Demons of Elysium—was my demon Belphagor beating the metaphorical pants off a little pampered angelic grand duchess at the demon game of wingcasting. This is the game (or one of them) at which Belphagor is the master.

What is wingcasting? I thought it might be easier if Belphagor told you. What follows is an excerpt from Book 1 of The House of Arkhangel'sk, The Fallen Queen, which began the journey that ends today with the release of Book 3 in the Demons of Elysium series, Master of the Game. Belphagor has been tasked with entertaining the mad cousin of the grand duchess, and he decides to teach the angel what he knows:

§

When the Ophanim admitted him, the principality stared at him with naked hostility.

Belphagor held up the cards. “I thought I’d teach you one of my vices.”

“Really.” Kae dropped his book onto his tea table. “I had no idea vices could be learned.”

“Indeed they can, my lord.” Belphagor pulled up a chair beside the table and shuffled the deck.

“And if I ordered you to leave?”

“I imagine she’d punish us both. I have no idea how she punishes you, but I don’t care for the way she punishes me. I’d prefer to avoid it.”

“She punishes me by sending you to my suite,” snapped Kae.

Belphagor began to deal the cards. “There are four suits and four choirs. I’m sure you’re familiar with the choirs.”

“The natural order to which I belong and you do not? I think I’m acquainted.”

“The four suits are based on symbols from the world of Man. Spindles, knives, tricks, and facets. Thus, forty-eight natural cards: three orders of angels in each choir, and four choirs in each suit. There are also two wild cards—the succubus and the incubus.”

“Delightful.”

Belphagor placed the die before him and set the rest of the cards on the table. “Technically, there should be rims to throw against, but if you cast the die without much force, I’m sure we can make this table work.” He picked up his hand and surveyed it, moving orders and suits together. “You need a matching set of orders or choirs, or a consecutive sequence of either for a winning hand. A ‘full choir’ is all the orders of a particular choir in the same suit: Dominion, Virtue, and Power of spindles, for example. A ‘full sphere’ is a single order in each of the four suits, such as the Principality of spindles, knives, tricks, and facets. Full choir beats a full sphere. ‘Fourchoir’—that’s the first order of each choir in the same suit; can’t be second or third orders—beats a full choir. That should be enough to start you off.”

Kae stared at him. “Nobody would make a game like that. It’s nonsense.”

“It’s your throw.” Rain battered the western windows of the suite. The pebbling sound on the glass behind Belphagor grew loud in the silence while the principality continued to stare. At last, Kae sighed and tossed the die across the table.

“Salamander,” said Belphagor.

“I beg your pardon?”

“I called Salamander. It landed on Phoenix, so you’re clear. If it had been Salamander, you’d have to surrender a card.” Belphagor shifted a few of his with apparent purpose. “This is where I’d have to increase my bet if we were playing for facets, but since I haven’t any and you don’t know wingcasting, we’re just playing for fun.” He nodded at Kae’s cards, still facedown on the table. “You’ll want to know what you’re holding.”

The principality unfolded his arms and snatched the cards from the table, clearly baffled by the rules Belphagor had rattled off. “Now what?”

“I throw.” Belphagor cupped the die and blew on it. “Call.” He cast with practiced ease.

“Call what?”

The die landed, showing the Serpent.

“Well, if you’d called Serpent, you’d have won that round, and I’d be surrendering a card right now. There’s a different elemental creature on each face. Take a look. I can write them down for you to refer to until you’ve committed them to memory.” Belphagor set his hand facedown on the table and stood. “Do you have pen and ink?”

Kae turned the dodecahedron die in his hand, then slammed it back onto the table. “I don’t need it written down. Just roll.”

“It’s called throwing.” Belphagor took his seat. “Or casting. Hence ‘wingcasting.’”

“Throw! Cast! I don’t care what you call it, just do it!”

Belphagor cast again, and the principality called out, “Bear!” The die landed on Dragon.

“There’s no bear,” said Belphagor. “There’s not even anything remotely resembling a bear on that die. Bat, Rook, Damselfly; Dragon, Phoenix, Salamander; Serpent, Ptarmigan, Toad; Swan, Crab, Eel. Three creatures of each element.”

The principality clutched his cards, barely controlled rage in his grey gaze.

Belphagor shrugged. “I suppose a dragon’s a little like a bear.” He lifted a card from his hand and put it face-up on the table. “There, now. You can take that if you wish. If it suits your current hand. Or you can throw again.”

Love is the ultimate game changer…and this time it’s winner take all.

Now that his lover is back in his arms, Belphagor is taking his own sweet time to say the words Vasily longs to hear: “You’re my boy.” And savoring the sweet torture
of driving the firespirit into a frenzy of unfulfilled need.

As the undisputed master of Heaven’s gaming tables, Belphagor never plays unless he’s certain of winning. But this time, political machinations send the game—and Vasily—tumbling to the brink of even his formidable control.

Vasily can’t deny enjoying their delightfully edgy play—until the airspirit auctions him off for a night to the one demon with a gift for taking things too far. Seductive Silk, tight-lipped about the end of his relationship with the sweet submissive Phaleg, may also be involved with a new faction threatening the pregnant queen of Heaven.

Belphagor couldn’t be less interested in the games angels play, but when angelic and demonic intrigues overlap, he’s drawn in against his will. And forced to break his one inviolable rule: Never gamble what you can’t afford to lose.

Warning: Contains more than a mouthful of m/m ménage, with intense D/s situations featuring intricate rope work, balaklavas, and a flurry of snow.

Saga of a Slush Pile

Posted by: Unknown
Beginning this past March, and ending, Muse willing, June 1st, a friend and I have been enjoying--or at least experiencing--our slush pile debut.

We set out with good intentions and with lust to publish the smut we wanted to see in the world.

This crusade, undertaken by my friend "Pasi" and I, started with an adventure in a Belgian bookstore. From America, I sent Pasi electronic messages of encouragement to explore what's being published romance and erotica-wise in her native land. She and her girlfriend promptly went to investigate the contents of some bookshelves...and returned disappointed, even to the point of horror. They bore tales of yawn- and groan-worthy heteronormativity, overabundance of "alpha males" who really just seemed  to be entitled jerks rather than attractive lovers, prose so purple it became ultraviolet. I wanted to comfort her by pointing out a lot of excellent erotica exists out there, too--but my confidence was suddenly undermined by reading the Bad Sex in Fiction award winners.

The fact is, our disappointment ran all the deeper because we did know some excellent writing existed. When I was younger I'd had the patience to shift through a lot of meh and some downright yucky books to get to a core of authors I really loved, and as an older reader, I began to expand my list judiciously with the guidance of a lot of reviews and more than a few anthologies (for which my habit, at one point, became "read cover to cover, write down the authors of the stories that didn't make me rage outright, hunt them down and never read the antho again, because of the rage outright bit." Sadly, even my best pre-screenings have failed to catch some rage-inducing reading experiences such as romanticized date-rape by the 'hero'). Meanwhile, Pasi had been getting most of her smutty and romantic fix through fanfiction. And we realized: between Pasi’s background in fanfiction and fandom culture, and my experience with the small press and self-publishing, we not only knew there were underappreciated writers out there who could do much, much better if given the chance, we also knew how to provide that chance.

NewSmutProject Icon

Thus, the New Smut Project was born.  Our goal: to bring the best aspects of NC-17 fanfiction and small press work—character-relevant sex, thoughtfulness, wordplay, and passion—in two collections of original erotica.

We sat down to write our submission guidelines. Aside from as much snickering about “submission” as might be expected when kinky individuals like ourselves sat down together, this went well, because we also shared goals for the anthologies. A prolific fanfiction writer with a Masters in psychology, Pasi wanted to see deeply-characterized erotica, where sex ties into the deepest motives and needs of the people having it, rather than the actions of cliched or cardboard "f*ckbots." For my part, a bit over a year ago, I first played with the idea of a collection of erotic shorts that each featured a character saying “No.” Because real people sometimes have boundaries in the bedroom, and respecting them doesn’t make their sex lives any less interesting or hot, but it's hard to find erotica or romance that reflects that fact! Now, we felt, the time had come.

When we posted our guidelines, we added two additional pages of storylines that made us UGH or SQUEE!  We figured we might as well be clear (plus we just enjoyed hashing out our preferences in such exquisite detail), although we also were a little concerned nobody would read all the way through. Perhaps we were being excessive. I remembered the words of my sister, who edits two fantasy webzines: "Less is more. Too much, and even smart people won't read it. And no matter how much detail you put in...people will still mess up."

For all that, we did have a healthy bit of back-and-forth over the next few days, further explaining ourselves and answering questions from a combination of experienced writers who had spotted our submission guidelines and from new and fanfiction writers interested in embarking on original fiction, but unsure how to start. Did we offer contributor's copies? (Yes!) Did we accept reprints? (Yes!) Did we accept stories about heterosexual couples? (Yes! And every other relational arragnement you can imagine!)

On the other hand... Suffice to say, we did get some submissions that obviously didn't fit. More advice from my editor sister: some people are just trying to psych you out, and submit stories purely for shock value. That seemed to be the only explanation for why, after having guidelines that we were pretty sure bled our concern for consent and a general feminist flavor, we got multiple stories in the slushpile that featured the exploitation, assault, and worse of female characters. We quickly added yet another post about submissions, trying to balance encouraging new writers (some of whom spoke with such an air of timidity it seemed they thought we were looking for reasons to reject them) while setting healthy boundaries around things we really didn't want to see.

As more newbies came to us with their questions and uncertainties, I found myself saying over and over again, "Look, just send us what you've got. You care, your heart is in the right place. I guarantee you won't be the worst we've seen." Sometimes I added, with fervent faith, "In fact, you might be the best."

And somewhat surprisingly to me (although perhaps not to Pasi), some of our absolute favorite, OH MY GOD YES!-inspiring stories did in fact come from new writers and fanfiction writers stretching their muscles with original fiction for the first time. Meanwhile, cover letters laden with prestigious credits sometimes came attached to fiction that, while often technically proficient, just didn't grab us.

I've always known that reading, especially when it comes to romance and erotica, is a matter of taste. And my tastes are somewhat specific (at the least, I get the sense they're not catered to by certain predominant trends in the genre). Diversity of viewpoints is part of the game when you launch an anthology of "character-driven" erotica. It's been extremely fun to see different writers' interpretation of our themes.

And just recently, I've had the breathtakingly awesome experience of reading two stories in a row, and for each one, thinking, "This is my fantasy in words. Did I write this in my sleep? --But no, I couldn't have; this is everything I want but so much better written than I could have done it."

And I look forward to getting to share those stories with the world.
