Guest Author Alexis Duran Excerpt from GRYFFON HALL

Posted by: Veronica Scott
Veronica sez: Alexis and I first ‘met’ on the Weekend Writing Warrior snippet hop and I really enjoy her smoothly written books! She’s here with her latest – take it away, Alexis!

Alexis: Thanks for having me on Here Be Magic.  I love fantasy in all its forms, both as a reader and writer.  The inspiration for Gryffon Hall came as a response to a call for submissions from my publisher, Loose Id. They ran a poll on their website asking readers to vote for their favorite tropes. Then they collected the top ten and challenged authors to "give the people what they want".  When I saw "fairy tale revisited" was on the list, along with "marriage of convenience", the idea of a reimagined Beauty and the Beast type tale completely took over my mind.  I've always wanted to play with a twisted fairy tale and this story was ridiculously fun to write. I've also been drawn to writing shifter stories, and this certainly falls into that category as well.

As I was writing Gryffon Hall, I really came to appreciate once again the depth and breadth of this supposedly simple tale.  I'm a big fan of Clarissa Pinkola Estes, who wrote Women Who Run With Wolves, the book that first exposed me to the modern psychological underpinnings in ancient folk tales. There's a reason the stories have hung around so long and why we're drawn to reliving them again and again. They are both frightening and satisfying and we love to read them, if even we know how the stories will end, or think we do.  Kind of like Tarot cards, the symbolism speaks to something deep inside us.  With Beauty and the Beast, I believe we relate to both characters, the innocent thrust into a dangerous situation with all his preconceptions challenged and the misunderstood "dark man" who craves love but is afraid of his own wild nature.
Sprinkle on a little magic, add a gay romance, some humor and hot sex, and voila, an ancient tale made new once again. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it!

The Story: Fated to be born the useless fourth son of the Lord of Glimmerveen, Wryler dreams of getting married and escaping the rustic confines of his father's castle. A wealthy merchant's son seems to hold the key to Wryler's safe if somewhat dreary future. However, the arrival of a mysterious stranger on the eve of Wryler's betrothal sends his plans into disarray, and Wryler finds himself traded off in marriage to one of the most notorious rogues in the land. Is Lord Aeric Rouchet the scoundrel he appears to be, or is he something much worse?

Separated from his family and thrust into a strange and dangerous new life at the foreboding Gryffon Hall, Wryler must unravel the secret of his husband's shadowed life and defeat the curse which threatens not only his growing affection for the barbarian in his bed, but the lives of everyone the Lord of Gryffon Hall is sworn to protect.

In this excerpt, Wryler is on his way to Gryffon Hall.  He has his first encounter with a magical being and finds out just how tricky and capricious they can be.
The rain had finally stopped, and a brisk breeze tore rents in the clouds. Wryler was amazed to see how many more stars speckled the sky this far from the lights and dust of the castle and village. He’d left behind his telescope only after Krull assured him that Gryffon Hall had an entire chamber full of such “nonsense,” plundered along with books, artwork, and all sorts of useless things.
Wryler shivered but couldn’t help moving just a little farther away from the campfire and deeper into the shadows of the trees. A small brook gurgled and splashed, muffling the voices of the men who prepared for sleep. At the brook’s edge, a wider gap between the treetops made stargazing easier.
Wryler looked into the water and was pleased to see the face of the moon bobbing and dancing on the stream. This might not be much of a forest in Krull’s eyes, but it was still a magical place. Something long constrained unlocked within Wryler, and a sense of peace flooded through his bones. Maybe he was just tired. He leaned against an oak overhanging the stream and felt as if he might fall asleep standing upright.
“What a pretty thing to leave lying about. Why, someone might come along and snatch him up!”
Wryler shook his head, sure he’d momentarily slipped into a doze. He looked around for the source of the voice and wasn’t much surprised to see a man even smaller than himself crouching next to the stream.
“Why is it I’m not startled to see you there?” Wryler asked.
“Because I’ve cast a bit of a sleep spell over you so you won’t scream and run away.”
“A spell, eh?” A prickle of alarm poked at Wryler’s lethargy, but not enough to goad him into resisting. “Who are you, then? Or rather, what are you? An elf?”
The man snorted and stood upright. “Those do-gooding fairy lovers wouldn’t dare come this far into the lands of men. They call me Rumple.” He pointed at himself with his thumb. He was thin as twig. Black hair framed a gaunt, pale face. He was young, near Wryler’s age or thereabouts, and handsome in the devious way of cats, with a languid grace and hungry eyes.
It might have been the moonlight or the spell, but Wryler could see no color in Rumple’s eyes, only a clear light that reminded him of gazing into a crystal goblet of water.
“What do you want from me?” Wryler asked. He knew he should try to flee or call for help, but his limbs were heavy, and he was comfortable leaning against the tree. Besides, Krull would miss him soon. There wasn’t too much mischief Rumple could cause before Wryler was rescued.
“I don’t want anything from you, Wryler Glimmerveen. I want to give you something. Advice.”
“And why would I listen to a creature who pops up out of the woods and casts spells on people?”
“Because I know the truth about your groom. Lord Aeric Rouchet.” Rumple turned his head and spit into the stream.
“And what truth would that be?” Wryler asked, heart beating faster.
Rumple sauntered up to Wryler and leaned in close. He smelled of wild mint and wet moss. “He’s a monster,” he whispered.
“So people keep telling me,” Wryler said. “That word is open to interpretation. Do you mean monster literally or figuratively?”
Rumple stared at him, narrow eyes widening, then snarled and tapped Wryler on the chest. “You’ll find out soon enough. The only question is, are you smart enough to survive, or will you vanish like the others?”

Kiss the Guardian (Part Two)

Posted by: Unknown

(Read part one here)

Being tricky meant choosing the game that made the best use of Felix’s talents, and that meant not trying Ring the Bell.

“Aww, c’mon, it’s just for fun.” Zed smiled his most winsome smile—or simply plucked another charmer from the collection. “And you’ll like the thing you have to do for me.” He winked. “Promise.”

Zed was obviously thinking of sexy things. Felix liked sexy things. “Fine.”

Elias went first. Felix did not laugh when the captain failed to ring the bell. Nessa gave it her best, swinging the mallet against the plate with a small shriek. She did not ring the bell. Felix didn’t really care if Zed managed the feat, he simply enjoyed watching his man move—his grip on the mallet handle, the way his torso twisted, the bunch of musculature in his arms. He rang the bell.

Despite his contrary nature, Felix gave it his best shot. The holographic arrow darted up from the plate and stopped just short of the bell. The silence was deafening. Mustering a smile, he handed the mallet to Qek.

“Give it all you’ve got!” Nessa encouraged, jumping and clapping her hands like a toddler.

Qek’s forehead smoothed, a sure sign of thought. Then she swung the mallet down with surprising force. The arrow shot up the pole and slammed into the bell.

“Damn.”

“And the winner is our ashushk friend!” the barker announced, handing over a fluffy approximation of a Gentian squirrel.

Qek counted the tentacles, perhaps checking for anatomical correctness. “I have not seen a live Gentian squirrel, but in the pictures I have seen, they are not pink.”

“It’s a toy, Qek.”

“Do adults play with toys?”

Nessa cuffed the side of Felix’s head before he could instruct their pilot further in the art of human sexuality. “Hey.” He rubbed his offended curls.

“Think of it as a keepsake,” Nessa said.

Producing a wrinkled smile, Qek stuffed the squirrel under her arm. “What will we play next?”

Elias was scratching his head. “How come Qek managed to ring the bell harder than Zed?”

“I deduced it was a matter of applying the correct amount of force to exactly the right point of the plate.”

Zed laughed. “Okay, let’s see you apply science to Whac-A-Lem.”

Qek whacked the Lems that were only thinking about poking their holographic noses out of their holes. Then she bowled a perfect game of Skeeball. When all of her stupidly light ping pong balls found their way into fishbowls, Felix had to bite his lips over a pout. How was she doing this? More importantly, without any points, how could he convince Zed to help him flush the water cycler aboard the Chaos? Sexy favors be damned, that was a messy job and he wanted help with it.

The little blue ashushk bounced up and down on her toes, a move obviously borrowed from Nessa, as she collected her prize for popping the most balloons with a dart.

Felix elbowed Zed. “You were covert ops, man. How come you can’t kill six balloons with four darts?”

“Because it’s not fucking possible!”

“Qek’s green giraffe begs to differ.”

Grumbling, Zed led the way to the shooting gallery. “Okay, this is where we’ll separate the men from the ashushk.”

Nessa’s hand shot out before Zed could duck and he got his first cuff of the afternoon.

Felix leaned in to Zed’s side. “You know Qek looks after the weapons stored aboard the Chaos, right? She can break down a plasma rifle in thirty-seven seconds.”

Zed gaped and Felix wished he had a ping pong ball. His mouth formed the perfect O.

Qek won the match—passing off yet another stuffed animal to Felix—and then she met her match. “I do not understand the point of the next game.”

Felix glanced up from an intense study of the neon yellow python wrapped around his wrist. The faux fur was incredibly soft and the eyes were sort of cute. “Huh?”

“It’s a kissing booth,” Nessa explained.

“How is the game played?”

“Well, it’s not a game. You just pass over some credits for the chance to kiss someone really attractive.” Felix glanced at the booth’s occupant and frowned. “Ah, normally it’s a really good looking girl or guy. I dunno what that’s supposed to be.”

The booth’s attendant waved them over. “Want to kiss the Guardian?”

Looked like a cross between an elephant and a Berian cockroach. This was supposed to be the most technologically advanced species in the galaxy?

Zed poked a finger toward the shimmering holo. “That is not a Guardian.”

Elias nudged Zed in the middle of the back. “You should probably kiss it to make sure.”

“I wonder what the Guardians would make of this representation,” Qek mused.

“I got reliable information that this is a bona fide depiction of an actual Guardian,” the barker said.

“I think you’ve been hoodwinked,” Elias replied.

Nessa tilted her head. “I don’t know. I think it has a certain majesty.”

Zed slung an arm around Felix’s shoulders. “Well, I’m not going to kiss it. Not when I got a perfect pair of lips right beside me.”

Corny as hell, but the declaration warmed Felix’s middle. “Neither of us got any points,” he murmured, putting his mouth close enough to Zed’s for that kiss.

Zed pecked his lips. “Just as well we didn’t wager with Qek.”

“I would have asked for help flushing the water cycler,” the little ashushk said.

“I thought it was my turn to do it?”

“Perhaps you’d like to help me with it, Fixer?”

Not really, but it would be uncharitable to say no when Qek had given him his fluffy yellow snake. Felix mustered a smile. “Okay, sure.”

Zed’s lips brushed his ear. “After, I can give you another job to do. One you’ll enjoy.”

Felix’s smile spread into a grin.

“Hey, isn’t anyone going to kiss the Guardian?”

Felix gestured toward Elias. “It’s all yours, Cap’n. Go for it.”

Kiss the Guardian (Part One)

Posted by: Jenn Burke
To celebrate the release of LONELY SHORE, book two of the Chaos Station series, Kelly and I wanted to treat our readers to a fun short story set between books one and two. We hope you enjoy it! Stay tuned for part two tomorrow.

----

Wenchang Station, 2269

It was just an average delivery job until the clown rolled by on a unicycle.

For a second, Zed thought he’d hallucinated it. Alien poison was flowing through his veins, after all, and God knew what form his mental degeneration would eventually take. Hallucinations were a definite possibility. He’d never had a particular thing for clowns—good or bad—but hallucinations didn’t care, right?

He breathed a sigh of relief when Flick muttered, “What the fuck.”

“I…do not know.” Qek clicked, her broad, blue face smoothing as she tried to understand what had just moved past them. “That…I have never seen such a thing before.”

“Oh my God, is the carnival today?” Ness grabbed Elias’s arm, as if she were trying to stop herself from bouncing. Her wild red curls vibrated with the aborted movement as the captain looked at her with an expression stuck somewhere between amusement and confusion. “We’ve got to check it out.”

Flick narrowed his eyes. “Wait, what carnival?”

“The carnival.” Ness waited for them to clue in, but even Zed was drawing a blank. “You guys seriously need to absorb some culture at some point,” she said on a huff. “Wenchang Carnival. It’s a big deal, used to happen twice a year? Ring a bell?”

That sort of did tickle a memory, actually. “Before the war, right?”

“Yeah, and this is the first one since the war ended. And we’re here while it’s on! I always wanted to check it out.” Still holding Elias’s arm with one hand, she gripped Qek’s with the other. “C’mon, Captain, you’re going to win Qek and I some stuffed animals.”

“Oh…great.” Though Elias’s voice was dry, his expression had slipped fully into the amused side of things.

Zed looked at Flick. Flick looked back. He couldn’t quite read his lover’s expression. Were his brows lowered because he thought the carnival was stupid or because he was trying to figure out how the ship’s doctor could be reduced to an excited schoolgirl by the promise of cheap toys?

“You, uh…” Zed shrugged as they trailed after the rest of the Chaos’s crew. “You want to check it out? I could try winning something for you.”

“Or maybe I’ll win something for you.”

“I have better aim.”

“I figure out angles.”

“I’m stronger.”

“I’m trickier.”

“Are we seriously arguing about who’s going to win what?”

“Maybe.” Flick eyed the colorful stalls that came into view as they rounded a corner. “Want to make it interesting?”

Zed couldn’t stop the smile that bloomed on his lips. He had a flash of what they’d been like back at the Academy—always up for fun and games. “What, we’re competing now?”

“Whoever wins the most challenges—”

“Gets the most toys?”

Flick glared at him. “No. Whoever wins the most challenges gets to have the other person do one thing for them.”

“Just one?”

“Greedy bastard. You in or out?”

Zed’s grin widened. “Oh, I’m in.”

The Talon of the Hawk (Book three of The Twelve Kingdoms)

A HEAVY CROWN

Three daughters were born to High King Uorsin, in place of the son he wanted. The youngest, lovely and sweet. The middle, pretty and subtle, with an air of magic. And the eldest, the Heir. A girl grudgingly honed to leadership, not beauty, to bear the sword and honor of the king.

Ursula’s loyalty is as ingrained as her straight warrior’s spine. She protects the peace of the Twelve Kingdoms with sweat and blood, her sisters from threats far and near. And she protects her father to prove her worth. But she never imagined her loyalty would become an open question on palace grounds. That her father would receive her with a foreign witch at one side and a hireling captain at the other—that soldiers would look on her as a woman, not as a warrior. She also never expected to decide the destiny of her sisters, of her people, of the Twelve Kingdoms and the Thirteenth. Not with her father still on the throne and war in the air. But the choice is before her. And the Heir must lead...

How to be Master of the Game

Posted by: Jane Kindred
In honor of Release Day for Master of the Game, I thought I'd share a little about the game in the title.

The first words I wrote when I began my series of books about demons and angels—The House of Arkhangel'sk, and its m/m erotic romance prequel, Demons of Elysium—was my demon Belphagor beating the metaphorical pants off a little pampered angelic grand duchess at the demon game of wingcasting. This is the game (or one of them) at which Belphagor is the master.

What is wingcasting? I thought it might be easier if Belphagor told you. What follows is an excerpt from Book 1 of The House of Arkhangel'sk, The Fallen Queen, which began the journey that ends today with the release of Book 3 in the Demons of Elysium series, Master of the Game. Belphagor has been tasked with entertaining the mad cousin of the grand duchess, and he decides to teach the angel what he knows:

§

When the Ophanim admitted him, the principality stared at him with naked hostility.

Belphagor held up the cards. “I thought I’d teach you one of my vices.”

“Really.” Kae dropped his book onto his tea table. “I had no idea vices could be learned.”

“Indeed they can, my lord.” Belphagor pulled up a chair beside the table and shuffled the deck.

“And if I ordered you to leave?”

“I imagine she’d punish us both. I have no idea how she punishes you, but I don’t care for the way she punishes me. I’d prefer to avoid it.”

“She punishes me by sending you to my suite,” snapped Kae.

Belphagor began to deal the cards. “There are four suits and four choirs. I’m sure you’re familiar with the choirs.”

“The natural order to which I belong and you do not? I think I’m acquainted.”

“The four suits are based on symbols from the world of Man. Spindles, knives, tricks, and facets. Thus, forty-eight natural cards: three orders of angels in each choir, and four choirs in each suit. There are also two wild cards—the succubus and the incubus.”

“Delightful.”

Belphagor placed the die before him and set the rest of the cards on the table. “Technically, there should be rims to throw against, but if you cast the die without much force, I’m sure we can make this table work.” He picked up his hand and surveyed it, moving orders and suits together. “You need a matching set of orders or choirs, or a consecutive sequence of either for a winning hand. A ‘full choir’ is all the orders of a particular choir in the same suit: Dominion, Virtue, and Power of spindles, for example. A ‘full sphere’ is a single order in each of the four suits, such as the Principality of spindles, knives, tricks, and facets. Full choir beats a full sphere. ‘Fourchoir’—that’s the first order of each choir in the same suit; can’t be second or third orders—beats a full choir. That should be enough to start you off.”

Kae stared at him. “Nobody would make a game like that. It’s nonsense.”

“It’s your throw.” Rain battered the western windows of the suite. The pebbling sound on the glass behind Belphagor grew loud in the silence while the principality continued to stare. At last, Kae sighed and tossed the die across the table.

“Salamander,” said Belphagor.

“I beg your pardon?”

“I called Salamander. It landed on Phoenix, so you’re clear. If it had been Salamander, you’d have to surrender a card.” Belphagor shifted a few of his with apparent purpose. “This is where I’d have to increase my bet if we were playing for facets, but since I haven’t any and you don’t know wingcasting, we’re just playing for fun.” He nodded at Kae’s cards, still facedown on the table. “You’ll want to know what you’re holding.”

The principality unfolded his arms and snatched the cards from the table, clearly baffled by the rules Belphagor had rattled off. “Now what?”

“I throw.” Belphagor cupped the die and blew on it. “Call.” He cast with practiced ease.

“Call what?”

The die landed, showing the Serpent.

“Well, if you’d called Serpent, you’d have won that round, and I’d be surrendering a card right now. There’s a different elemental creature on each face. Take a look. I can write them down for you to refer to until you’ve committed them to memory.” Belphagor set his hand facedown on the table and stood. “Do you have pen and ink?”

Kae turned the dodecahedron die in his hand, then slammed it back onto the table. “I don’t need it written down. Just roll.”

“It’s called throwing.” Belphagor took his seat. “Or casting. Hence ‘wingcasting.’”

“Throw! Cast! I don’t care what you call it, just do it!”

Belphagor cast again, and the principality called out, “Bear!” The die landed on Dragon.

“There’s no bear,” said Belphagor. “There’s not even anything remotely resembling a bear on that die. Bat, Rook, Damselfly; Dragon, Phoenix, Salamander; Serpent, Ptarmigan, Toad; Swan, Crab, Eel. Three creatures of each element.”

The principality clutched his cards, barely controlled rage in his grey gaze.

Belphagor shrugged. “I suppose a dragon’s a little like a bear.” He lifted a card from his hand and put it face-up on the table. “There, now. You can take that if you wish. If it suits your current hand. Or you can throw again.”

§

Love is the ultimate game changer…and this time it’s winner take all.

Now that his lover is back in his arms, Belphagor is taking his own sweet time to say the words Vasily longs to hear: “You’re my boy.” And savoring the sweet torture
of driving the firespirit into a frenzy of unfulfilled need.

As the undisputed master of Heaven’s gaming tables, Belphagor never plays unless he’s certain of winning. But this time, political machinations send the game—and Vasily—tumbling to the brink of even his formidable control.

Vasily can’t deny enjoying their delightfully edgy play—until the airspirit auctions him off for a night to the one demon with a gift for taking things too far. Seductive Silk, tight-lipped about the end of his relationship with the sweet submissive Phaleg, may also be involved with a new faction threatening the pregnant queen of Heaven.

Belphagor couldn’t be less interested in the games angels play, but when angelic and demonic intrigues overlap, he’s drawn in against his will. And forced to break his one inviolable rule: Never gamble what you can’t afford to lose.

Warning: Contains more than a mouthful of m/m ménage, with intense D/s situations featuring intricate rope work, balaklavas, and a flurry of snow.

Hi ho Carrma, Awaaaaaay!!!

Posted by: Anonymous
Fall has finally made it to Southern Arizona. Which means it'll be about two or three weeks of lovely temperatures before it gets darn cold. (Yes, it gets below freezing here in the desert. It will get near zero, though rarely. Let me tell you about the burst pipes and frozen, dying trees...)

So, it being a pleasant morning, I figured it was time to go for a ride. I hadn't been on my horse for probably a couple of months. Got the bridle. Got the whip. (I don't smack her with it, it's more of a guidance tool.) Took Carrma into the round pen and put the bridle on. Lick chew, lick chew, which means she's happy. I don't have a saddle or bareback pad, so we get to ride with her nekkid.

This is how it went:

1. Park horse by mounting block.
2. Step on mounting block, gather reins.
3. Horse moves.
4. Try not to fall off mounting block while going to wrangle horse.
5. Use whip to try and get across, "NO, DON'T MOVE!"
6. Repeat steps 1-5.

Horse: 20. Human: 1/2

See, I managed to get a leg partway over (thank goodness she's a short horse, only 14.2 hands) and Carrma walked away. Having an off-balance monkey on her back made her go faster, so I bailed. Fell on the ground, but not hard enough to bruise. Carrma looks back. Lick chew, lick chew.

Carrma has her quirks. Being a former broodmare, she's bossy. She never was ridden much, and while she has the basics, the finer points need some improvement. (And, admittedly, so does her non-horsey Human.) But Carrma is not an easily spooked horse; she won't run just to be a pest. If she got loose, she'd go to the nearest patch of grass and stop to eat. If she doesn't do something I want her to, it's because I'm not asking right or not listening to what she's trying to tell me. She's a smart pony, and generally when we're in the round pen she'll follow me around, which is great until I want her to stand still. It just took time and patince, but she figured out what I was trying to do, because:

Round 2:
1. Stand on mounting block.
2. Carrma circles around with minimal prompting
3. Get horse parked in front of mounting block.
4. Repeat steps 1-3 until, finally, SUCCESS!

Horse: 5. Human: 1.

And that 1 is all that counts. Then it was VROOM around the round pen until she got used to carrying me and proved that, yes, she would go where I wanted her to even if she protested a bit, and then we went Out to wander around the barn property. We got to the arena, and VROOM, trot, trot, trot with me bouncing along like a sack of flour. We didn't do much of that, because I am chicken (nekkid horses are a bit slippery) and our steering is not good enough that I trust her to just trot around the arena, which is a large gravel area with no fence, and not go zooming out to the nearest patch of grass.

And because she wanted to go ZOOOM I let her loose in the jump arena,, which is fenced, and off she went to race around, looking good for a 26-year-old mare.

But she was happy, and she got her apple, which had to be shared with her three nosy neighbors. Then big yawns, which means she's relaxed and feeling good after her exercise.

Anyway. Adventures in horse-dom, brought to you by the fact that my e-book LEVADE will be out in paperback here shortly, and Carrma's got a cameo in it, so, you know you want to buy it...

Eliana: Pain and Pleasure

Posted by: Anonymous

Take an extra 10% off Eliana this week at Loose Id!

While my new book, Eliana, is set in the same world as my previous books (and features a character from Levade), there are no horses in this book. My mare Carrma is somewhat displeased, but I have mollified her by taking her lots of apples.

Thinking back to the inspiration for this book, Eliana whas a character I had created for an ill-fated sequel to my first demon book, Demon's Dance. She was a dominant, no-nonsense kind of woman who knew both how to inflict pain and how to help others heal from it. I didn't want to give her up and started thinking about how she might have gotten involved with the Wardens--a group of men and women dedicated to hunting incubi and aiding their sexually promiscuous offspring. And, more importantly, why and how she became a dominant.

In one way, this book is Eliana's origin story, but  after finishing Levade I realized how Eliana could mesh with Konstantin, one of the characters introduced in that book, and that became an interesting story in itself--how does the son of a crazed Nazi geneticist become a healer as well as a submissive, and what lasting effect will that have on him?

So despite the title, Eliana isn't just about Eliana. There's Kon, and his male dominant, Dane, and all sorts of learning and growing and healing for all three.

Oh, and sex. Did I mention there's lots of sex?

Cover art by the fabulous Anne Cain.

Also--now available from Amazon and Barnes and Noble: Love, lust and Lipizzans. Capriole. In PRINT!!!!

Carrma sez, "Buying my human's books will help her make sure I have enough hay to eat and a warm blankie during freak snowstorms in southern Arizona. Plus you get to read about Lipizzans like me."

The Druid Stone by Heidi Belleau & Violetta Vane - Influences and Layers

Posted by: VV
Hi! I'm Violetta Vane, and my first Carina novel is The Druid Stone, coauthored with Heidi Belleau. I'm excited to start blogging at Here Be Magic.

First things first: we're winding down the blog tour for The Druid Stone on Monday, August 27th. But until then, there are two giveways open. At the Carina Press blog, you can still enter to win a sterling silver triple spiral pendant. At one of my other group blogs, LGBT Fantasy Fans and Authors, you can win a copy of The Druid Stone simply by listing a bisexual immortal (if that sounds hard, don't worry—the post gives plenty of hints!)

For my post, I'd like to talk a bit about influences. We all have inspirational, foundational writers that we look up to. One of mine is C. J. Cherryh, a prolific writer of many science fiction and fantasy novels, series and stories. She has the kind of vivid anthropological imagination that’s so crucial to world-building in both genres. When she writes science fiction, I always get the sense that her aliens are really and truly alien, not just humans with a few forehead wrinkles.  The non-human races in her fantasy books are just as unique and compelling. Some of them she invents out of whole cloth, but she's also written several books inspired by Celtic mythology: The Ealdwood Saga, Faery in Shadow and "The Brothers", a short story that serves as the prequel to Faery in Shadow.

What I love about all these books is that they go back to the roots of Celtic mythology and strip away the Tolkienisms that most fantasy readers are used to. I'm a Tolkien fan myself—I grew up reading him—but there's a limit to how much Tolkien-lite I can handle, and I reached that limit decades ago. Cherryh's Celtic fantasy is told in epic language, but it's clean and spare, not pompous. The supernatural inhabitants of this world are what the ancient myths would be like if they were made flesh. They are not simply a sexier version of modern humans. They have godlike, animal and human qualities in unpredictable measure, and their motives are often left a complete mystery.

Of all these books, Faery in Shadow and “The Brothers” are my favorites, because of the tight plots and because of the relationship between Caith mac Sliabhin and Dubhain. Caith was fostered by outlaws but is the son of a chieftain, and Dubhain is a pooka, a shapeshifting water horse, though he most often takes the form of a dark-haired young man.  They’re thrown together by the machinations of Dubhain’s faery overlord, Nuallan. If you think this set-up is perfect for romance, you’d be right, and there’s a massive amount of homoerotic tension between Caith and Dubhain. Dubhain, being essentially inhuman, often torments Caith with a smile, but is forced to obey him and frequently says he loves him. Caith is a seriously depressed dude and full of anger towards the magical world. He hates having Dubhain’s service forced on him, but he also relies on him heavily. Despite the strong tension and some tender moments between the two, there’s no romance or sex at all in these books. The overall tone is incredibly dark and grim. In fact, they’re as close to true faery noir as I’ve ever read, and the dark side of humanity is shown just as much as the dark side of the supernatural.

The setting is pre-Christian Scottish highlands. There’s no attempt at location in a timeline, and I can’t judge the historical accuracy, but the feeling of this world is amazingly genuine. The descriptions have a timeless, mythic weight, balanced perfectly with concrete sensory details. I felt Caith’s frustration as he travels over the difficult terrain, and the landscapes of this book are absolutely gorgeous.  I received a strong sense of a misty, watery world, visions of dark green over grey stone—a cold wind from a cold sea.

Many things about this book influenced my own writing. A little bit of the tension between Caith and Dubhain—the way that it involves antagonism and power play, certainly—transferred over to Sean and Cormac’s early relationship.  Finnbheara owes a lot to Nuallan, both in his morality and in his role in the narrative, although we gave our own sidhe lord much more of a twisted sense of humor.  The overall back-to-the-basics approach to Celtic fantasy also structured my approach to world-building in The Druid Stone.  Heidi had exactly the same philosophy, although in her case it was more informed by her extensive college studies in Celtic history. We researched the hell out of everything supernatural we put in there, and we weren’t satisfied unless we knew it came from primary sources.  Lastly, the mystery and suspense are incredibly powerful in Faery in Shadow. The obscure motivations of many of the key players result in true conflict, nothing like the sort of easily predictable stuff you’ll find in books of any genre that use suspense as a sort of last-minute seasoning instead of an integral part of the plot. We knew we wanted to tell a tight, exciting story with some dangerous twists and turns; we worked on that goal from the very beginning and saw it through to the end.

The Druid Stone is a very layered book. Layers of history are, themselves, a major theme of the book. There are lighter, irreverent, thoroughly modern layers on the surface, and many layers of romance as well, but the deepest, darkest, most ancient layer—the world of the mounds that reaches out to menace our lovers—is very much influenced by the story of Caith mac Sliabhin, kinslayer and cursed hero.

~~~
Sean never asked to be an O'Hara, and he didn't ask to be cursed by one either.
After inheriting a hexed druid stone from his great-grandfather, Sean starts reliving another man's torture and death...every single night. And only one person can help.
Cormac Kelly runs a paranormal investigation business and doesn't have time to deal with misinformed tourists like Sean. But Sean has real magic in his pocket, and even though Cormac is a descendant of legendary druids, he soon finds himself out of his depth...and not because Sean's the first man he's felt anything for in a long time.
The pair develop an unexpected and intensely sexual bond, but are threatened at every turn when Sean's case attracts the unwelcome attention of the mad sidhe lords of ancient Ireland. When Sean and Cormac are thrust backward in time to Ireland's violent history—and their own dark pasts—they must work together to escape the curse and save their fragile relationship.
Find it at Carina, Amazon, or Barnes & Noble.
Capriole is now available!
Posted by: Anonymous
I'm pleased and excited to announce the release of Capriole, an M/M Paranormal Romance from Loose Id!
After fleeing a brutal mental hospital in Barcelona, Felipe Camarena is trying to forge a new life as a psychology student in San Diego. Trouble is, he has a knack of knowing things he shouldn’t about people, and the all-too-real demons from his past are coming back to haunt him.
Professor Lukas von Rainer is a Warden—someone who hunts incubi and tames their sexually ravenous and dangerous offspring. As a fellow Sensitive, Lukas is the only one who can help when Felipe is severely injured by an incubus. He takes Felipe to his ranch in hopes that his Lipizzan horses will help him recover, but Felipe refuses to face his past and attempts to seduce Lukas instead. Lukas fends him off, surprised to find himself falling for the young man he’s vowed to aid. For years, he’s believed a physically satisfying and truly loving relationship is impossible because of his abilities, but is it?
He may not get the chance to find out. Even as he and the horses work their magic to heal Felipe, the incubus tracking them means to kill him and anyone who gets in its way.
To coincide with the release, I've also put together a video so you can meet me and the Lipizzan horses who inspired the book. As an added bonus, I'm having a drawing to win a copy of Capriole. All you have to do to enter is tell me about your favorite horse, whether real or fictional. Let me know in the comments below and I'll pick a name by Friday the 16th, 11:59 pm PST.
Excerpt:
Felipe slid into the Mustang’s passenger seat, too exhausted to care what Lukas planned on doing with him as long as he didn’t have to move or think. Lukas didn’t seem like the kind of man who would be cruel, but without being able to sense him, Felipe couldn’t be sure.
Felipe stared at Lukas’s key fob as it knocked against the steering column. It was leather burned with a picture of a running horse—the Mustang’s symbol. “Did you get a Mustang because you have horses?”
“Of course. White horses, white Mustang.” Lukas switched on the radio. “Do you like classical music?”
Felipe shrugged. His head lolled against the seat as he gazed out the window into the darkness beyond. Wherever they were, there were no streetlights.
Lukas drove east out of the city for about a half hour. The sky was just lightening to gray as he turned down a dirt road and drove through an iron gate inscribed SPIRIT HORSE RANCH.
He parked in the gravel driveway near a small ranch house and gestured to Felipe when they got out. “Come meet the herd.”
Reluctantly Felipe followed him toward a fenced area containing four white horses and two mottled gray. They were beautiful animals, strong and well built and emanating an intense presence that made Felipe uncomfortable.
“Have you ever been around horses?”
Felipe shook his head. Nervousness rooted his feet to the ground. He stayed several feet back while three of the animals arched their heads over the top of the fence and studied him. Their brown eyes held an unsettling amount of intelligence.
“This herd is very friendly. They won’t bite, and they love attention. Don’t you?” One horse whickered in answer. Lukas scratched the nearest under the jaw, inciting a stab of jealousy in Felipe at how comfortable he was with them. “These are all Lipizzans. I trained with a man from the Spanish Riding School when I lived in Austria, and brought Graciela in foal when I emigrated. This one is her son, a gelding. His official name is Pluto Graciela, but I call him Grady.”
“Pluto like the dog? And why is the riding school in Vienna Spanish?”
Lukas chuckled. “He’s not named after the cartoon character. There are six foundation stallions: Pluto, Maestoso, Favory, Siglavy, Conversano and Neapolitano. Purebred colts are given their father’s name followed by their mother’s, hence Pluto Graciela. The riding school is Spanish because the original horses were of Spanish heritage.”
They’re from home. The thought sent a surge of homesickness through him.
Lukas reached into a coffee can and put a sugar cube in Felipe’s palm. “Here. Grady loves these. Keep your hand flat and he’ll use his lips to take it.” Lukas gave him a push, sending Felipe within three feet of the fence. He extended his arm, and Grady artfully craned his neck to snatch the proffered treat. Soft, furry lips brushed his skin, but Felipe also felt something nontactile, something…
He jerked his hand back, trying to figure out just what he’d sensed. It was like that knowing when he bumped into a person, only the horse had felt somehow…clean. Pure.
The corner of Lukas’s mouth crooked up. “See? That wasn’t so bad.”
Lukas’s amusement annoyed him. “I’m tired,” Felipe said.
The slight grin vanished. His tone didn’t hide his disappointment. “Come on. I’ll show you to your room.”
* * * *
Lukas left Felipe alone in one of the bedrooms, frustrated by the kid’s reaction. But then, he hadn’t known what to expect. He’d hoped Felipe would show some interest in the horses rather than keeping his aloofness and gazing at them from behind the same wall of self-protection he used to distance himself from people. So he couldn’t break through it for an animal, either. Lukas had faith the horses would have something to say about that—if he could get Felipe close enough.
