The Next George RR Martin

Posted by: Joely Sue Burkhart
I saw an agent on Twitter mention this week that NY editors are definitely in the market for Epic Fantasy.  Specifically, they'd love to find the "next" George RR Martin.

I'm all for that - I *love* Martin's books just as much as I love Robert Jordan!  I've also made the same promise to myself.  While I'm not currently trying to keep up with the Game of Throne series--I ended with the super bloody wedding--as soon as the last book comes out, I'll read the entire series all the way through to the end.

Even though it'll be hard, because he kills my favorite character in the very first book (I loved Drogo *sobs*).

So what kind of series do you think will make it "big" next?  I think what made Martin's series so interesting to me in the beginning is that it's not just some epic battle of good vs. evil.  There's no Eye watching the world, no black mountain of Dhoom going to spew its evil and destroy civilization as we know it.  Martin was more about chess pieces sliding on the board.  Political intrigue.  Massive armies are gathering, but it's man vs. man for the most part.  Yes, Winter is coming, but after man gets done killing each other for the throne, it might not matter.

Will it be based on some kind of new twist of magic?  A new mythology?

What would you like to see make it huge in the world of epic fantasy in the coming years?

  1. Just the fact that epic fantasy is back in vogue blows my hair back. :) It's what I grew up on, what made me devour three books a week for years and heavily influenced why I'm a writer today.

    Couldn't be happier!

What I'd like to see are some fresh angles on the 'ancient evil has awoken' formula. It doesn't need to be discarded, but I'd love to feel like this is something I haven't seen yet.

I tend to be slightly more character focused, just by a bit, and I just LOVE it when an author nails the character development, setting AND story line. *happy sigh*

Can't wait to see what's in the pipeline.

    Life's good.

    1. Me too, Steve! BC (before children) I bought mostly fantasy because I needed a big thick book to last me all weekend. I'm looking forward to seeing what comes out in the next year(s)!

  2. I really enjoyed The Way of Kings, book one of the Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson. Tor was hyping it as the 'next' big thing, but I don't know if it will happen or not.

    1. I haven't tried Brandon S. yet. I've heard mixed feelings about how he did with the rest of RJ's series. I loved the first two books of Brent Weeks' Night Angel series, but the last one didn't quite do it for me. But that was the last trilogy I gobbled up like popcorn in a single weekend.

yet effective. A lot of times it's tough to get that "perfect balance" between usability and visual appearance. I must say that you've done a great job with this.
