National Day Holidays

Posted by: Ruth A Casie

national day is a designated date on which the nation celebrates an event such as independence or a landmark event or recognition like Presidents Day. But there are some National Days that are less significant, National Puppy Day, National Beer Day. There is actual something to celebrate every day of the year, like today.
There are a lot of things that happened on April 14 that are celebrated. Here are just a few:
  1. The Revolutionary War began, and Paul Revere made his famous ride in 1775
  2. Oliver Pollack invented the dollar sign in 1778
  3. Daytime soap opera General Hospital first aired on ABC in 1963
  4. The Pony Express began to deliver the mail in 1860
  5. Martin Luther King, Jr was assassinated in 1968
  6. Argonia, Kansas elected the first woman mayor, Susanna Medora Salter in 1887
  7. Twinkie hit the market in 1930
  8. The World Health Organization was founded in 1948
  9. Atlanta Braves’ Hank Aaron hit his 715th home run in 1974
  10. General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses D. Grant ended the Civil War in 1865

I’m talking about Ex-Spouse Day. Yes, you read that right. I thought it was a joke, a bad one at that. But no, it seems to be real (if you believe posts on social media and no matter the research, the creator of this holiday could not be found).
Let’s face it. Sometimes relationships just don’t work out. You see it with girlfriends, boyfriends, husbands, and wives. The relationship failed and we’d rather move on. No need to discuss and certainly no reason to celebrate it whether you are the walkee or the walker.
The challenge on this Ex-Spouse Day is to appreciate and recognize something good about your Ex. It could be good-bye and good riddance, or a thank you to his new partner (perhaps the one he was sleeping with?) for taking him off your hands.
So here are the reasons why I appreciate mine (yes I have an ex):
  • If I had remained married, I would never have found and married the true love of my life, Paul.
  • He gave me the smart, beautiful, sometimes sassy daughters, Sarah, Staci, and Cori; and Paul and I would never have had our wonderful son Ari.
  • He made me realize that trust was the one thing I couldn’t compromise or live without. It permeates my stories no matter what the era, trope, or situation.
Sarah, Staci, Cori, and Ari
So raise a glass with me and celebrate. To the ex’s of the world. Hazzah!
