Star Cruise: Outbreak #Scifi Audiobook Sample + Giveaway

Posted by: Veronica Scott
This was me last year, recording my bit part as a Star Trek Crew Member in a special audiobook. I don't narrate my own!
Since June was officially Audiobook Month and I had a new release, I thought I'd post the soundcloud sample here today. I'll also give away a free Audible.com download credit for the book to THREE randomly selected commenters on this post - the question is: Where do you prefer to listen to audiobooks and why? Or if you've never tried an audiobook, what's keeping you from trying them?

I'll announce the THREE winners on our Monday Here Be News feature on this blog and on our Facebook page.

Here's the story for Star Cruise:Outbreak:
She saved countless soldiers in the wars … but does she have the weapons to fight an outbreak?
Dr. Emily Shane, veteran of the Sector Wars, is known as “The Angel of Fantalar” for her bravery under fire as a medic. However, the doctor has her own war wounds–severe PTSD and guilt over those she failed to save.
Persuaded to fill a seemingly frivolous berth as ship’s doctor on the huge and luxurious interstellar cruise liner Nebula Zephyr, she finds the job brings unexpected perks–a luxe beach deck with water imported from Tahumaroa II, and Security Officer Jake Dilon, a fellow veteran who heats her up like a tropical sun.
However, Emily soon learns she and Jake didn’t leave all peril behind in the war. A mysterious ailment aboard the Zephyr begins to claim victim after victim … and they must race against time and space to find the cause and a cure! Trapped on a ship no spaceport will allow to dock, their efforts are complicated by a temperamental princess and a terrorist–one who won’t hesitate to take down any being in the way of his target.  If anyone’s left when the disease is through with them…
The book is a double SFR Galaxy Award Winner by the way!

Audiobooks: Do You Love 'Em or Hate 'Em?

Posted by: Angela Campbell

I'll be the first to admit that two of my biggest loves have suffered over the past year or so as I've dealt with life. Reading and writing. I can't seem to find time for either one!

In the past when I've had this problem, I solved it by plugging in my iPod (am I showing my age?) and listening to a good audiobook or two. I know. It's not the same as actually reading a book, but it's better than nothing. And I came to enjoy audiobooks on their own merit. OK, so I love audiobooks now. I've found some great ones over the years, including some written by my fellow Here Be Magic authors Veronica Scott, RL Naquin, Cindy Spencer Pape, Jody Wallace, and others. But the last year has walloped me good, and I can't even find time for audiobooks anymore.

A couple of weeks ago, I decided to put my Audible account to good use again and force myself to listen to something while I commute — to work, home, to visit my father in assisted living, to work, home, and so on. So far, it has taken me two weeks to finish one book — the romance "Sleepless in Manhattan" by Sarah Morgan — but I'm on a roll and looking for recommendations now.

I know many readers fall on one of two sides when it comes to audiobooks. You either love 'em or hate 'em. Which one are you? And either way, tell me what to listen to next. I want your suggestions. Have you read read a good book lately? Tell me about it. Listened to a good book? I want to know. I love almost all genres but am partial to fantasy and paranormal.

Leave your recommendations in the comments for me to consider and I'll be eternally grateful. Seriously, I'm so far out of the loop (but clawing my way back), it's not funny.

In case you missed the interview with Jeffe Kennedy at the Huffington Post on Fantasy Romance, her career and her recent release, THE PAGES OF THE MIND - then here's the cover reveal for the next book, THE EDGE OF THE BLADE!

A HAWK’S PLEDGE

The Twelve Kingdoms rest uneasy under their new High Queen, reeling from civil war and unchecked magics. Few remember that other powers once tested their borders—until a troop of foreign warriors emerges with a challenge . . .

Jepp has been the heart of the queen’s elite guard, her Hawks, since long before war split her homeland. But the ease and grace that come to her naturally in fighting leathers disappears when battles turn to politics. When a scouting party arrives from far-away Dasnaria, bearing veiled threats and subtle bluffs, Jepp is happy to let her queen puzzle them out while she samples the pleasures of their prince’s bed.

But the cultural norms allow that a Dasnarian woman may be wife or bed-slave, never her own leader—and Jepp’s light use of Prince Kral has sparked a diplomatic crisis. Banished from court, she soon becomes the only envoy to Kral’s strange and dangerous country, with little to rely on but her wits, her knives—and the smolder of anger and attraction that burns between her and him . . .

Audio Books - Where the Characters Come Alive!

Posted by: Linda Mooney
Raise your hand if you've ever listened to an audio book.

All right. I see the majority of you haven't. So my question to you is, Why not?

For the price of a hardback book (or less), you can take the audio version of your favorite books with you on your phone, and listen to it wherever you go. It's hands-free entertainment!

What's more, you get to "hear" what the characters "sound" like. You get the timber of their voices and the nuances of what they say. You can actually imagine yourself being right there with them when the action happens. Even better, with every repeat listen, you'll be able to catch something new and different, the same way you do when you're re-watching a favorite movie.

The majority of authors personally oversee the creation of their works, right down to the correct pronunciation of the characters' names and places. They make sure the action sequences sound as exciting as they should, and the loving moments are tender and emotional.

If you're curious, you can get a "taste" of what an audiobook's narration sounds like by clicking on the SAMPLE button. Check out the ones I have here for an example.

With summer coming on, you may not want to lie out on the beach or in the backyard and read. Instead, why not close your eyes and let yourself get lost listening to a good book?

While traveling home after dark, against her father’s warnings, Bethel and her guards are attacked by what she thought were wild animals, but she couldn’t be more wrong. The Magic of the Audio Book: The Narrator

Posted by: Veronica Scott

Lately, I’ve been sharing some thoughts and insights from the recording and release process for the audio book of my 2013 SFR Galaxy Award winning novel WRECK OF THE NEBULA DREAM. The wonderful actor who narrated the book for me – Michael Riffle – has been kind enough to be interviewed for my blog last week, and also provided a few new followup comments for Here Be Magic today about the audition process.

Authors and actors have a lot in common, I think – as writers we’re always risking rejection and bad reviews and so are they. We write the words, set the scene, create the characters and the actors breathe life into all of it. The first time I listened to Michael reading MY words, portraying Captain Nicholas “Nick” Jameson, I was literally spellbound. I’ve said before, I received many auditions for the book but no one was quite right until I heard Michael’s audition. From the first word, I knew the character was speaking to me.

During the two month recording process, we did e mail and tweet about some aspects of the book, and especially the pronunciations – the book is the book, we couldn’t revise what was published a year ago. But there were moments when I sure wanted to! Listening to the action as Michael brought it to life, I heard a few things my Editor and I both missed. Having all the characters and all the action made so vividly real as he narrated just did wonders for my creativity on the new book I was writing during this time frame too! A nice side effect.

So I asked Michael to share some insight into the audition process today and what led him to select WRECK OF THE NEBULA DREAM:
M: Well, I narrowed down my search for books to what would fit my abilities, and I thought to myself "What kind of genre am I feeling.... SciFi.  I love scifi, so lets see what we've got available".  Wreck was the first on the list, so I read the synopsis and two things really enticed me.  1 - Titanic in space.  There was a game I played with my sister when we were young called Starship Titanic which was (I think) written by Douglas Adams who is one of my favorites, so I made that connection and was already sold. (VS sez: I’d never heard of this game till now but it’s fascinating.) 2 - My mother's name is Veronica.  I thought 'It must be a sign!'.

The thing that I love most about auditioning for things from my own studio is that I can do as many takes as I want.  My usual preparation for a VO audition is to read the material once or twice for content, and then I just start recording on the off chance that I nail it on the first read.  With Wreck I think I did four full reads before I felt I'd gotten the right pacing.  Pacing is, I think, one of the hardest things when recording an audiobook.  It's very easy to fall into the trap of reading too quickly because I want to get to what happens next.  I get too into the story and start speeding up, so finding the right pace is really key.

For all the voice-over work I've done I always had the pages in advance and could record the audition at my own pace.  I get to read through it as many times as I want before submitting, but that can actually cause problems because of audition fatigue.  If I read the same page 15 times it's going to stop getting better after about the fourth read and start getting worse.  I'm a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to voice-over which can become a huge problem when I listen to what I did and think "Hmm...  Not _quite_ right.  I'll do just _one_ more read".  I've done some auditions where (looking back on them) I'm pretty sure I could've booked them if I'd sent in my third take instead of my twenty-third.

If you’d like to hear more about the audition process from my point of view as the author, here’s my blog from yesterday. If you’d like to hear Michael read the sample at Audible.com (“Listen > Play Sample”  right below the cover art)….
WRECK OF THE NEBULA DREAM is available for kindle, as an audio book or a paperback at Amazon.

Six Ways to Squeeze More Reading Into Your Day

Posted by: Nicole Luiken

I read 200 books a year.  Now I admit, I am a stay-at-home mom/writer, but even when I worked full-time I read over 100 books a year.

So how do I do it, and how can you, too?  Here are some ways.

1.  Carry a book and find opportunities to read.

On public transit.  In the can.  (Okay, this one is more my husband than me.)  At lunch.  Waiting for appointments: doctor, dentist, hair salon, etc.  At the airport.  During TV commercials.  While exercising. (I read while jogging on the spot--though if you get motion sick reading in a car, I don’t advise this one.) While your computer boots up.  While you’re waiting for the microwave or the coffee maker to finish.

2. Get an e-reader.  Or put the app on your iPod or smart phone.

If you can check your email/Facebook standing in line at the movie theater/bus stop/grocery store, you can read a few pages of a novel, too.

3. Try audio books.

While driving or working out at the gym or doing dishes or anything that busies your hands but leaves most of your mind free.  (Hint: the library has a large selection.)

4. Avoid channel surfing.

There are many well-written, excellent shows out there.  Keep the ones you love, but don't automatically turn on the TV.  Veg out with a book on the sofa instead.

5.   Set aside reading time as a reward for accomplishing unpleasant tasks.

Tell yourself, “If I do the dishes/vacuum the living room/wash the floor I’ll let myself read for ten minutes.”
Or, if you're a procrastinator, "I'll let myself read one scene, and then I'll do the dishes."

6. Read something you enjoy.

I really cannot emphasize this one enough. Pick a fast read that hooks you from the first page. Save the meaty, heavy prize-winning books for longer stretches of time (or never if you’re reading them because you think you should rather than because you actually enjoy them). Read (gasp) two books at once and switch between them if you hit a slow spot in one. Give yourself permission to not finish a book that isn’t to your taste and pick up one you’re eager to read.

Happy reading!

P.S. I currently have three books on the go.  Main read: paperback of Shadowborn by Alison Sinclair.  Ebook read: Quarter Square by David Bridger.  Basement read (while computer boots up): Costume Not Included by Matthew Hughes.
