WIP-It Wednesday for June 9, 2021

Posted by: PG Forte

PG Forte: I accepted an invitation this week to join a Halloween Short Story Anthology for THIS Halloween. Which will be the FIFTH story/novella I've committed to putting out in the next six months. Luckily, the theme of the Anthology--not just Halloween stories, but REVENGE stories set on or around Halloween, worked in my favor. I'm carving ONE short story out of my novel Visions Before Midnight (Oberon, Book 7), a book that's made up of three separate (but deeply intertwined) revenge stories and a (mostly) unrelated romance.

I'm calling the short story Only the Lonely, and I think it will be delightfully creepy. I'm also soooo excited about the cover.

Do You Judge a Book by the Cover?

Posted by: Maureen

By Maureen Bonatch

Scruff considering working on his novel

I admit it. I don’t like to think of my fiction books as a business. Like many authors, I often refer to my stories as my ‘book babies’. I talk about my characters like they’re real people in my life. I cherish my covers like a priceless painting.

My most recent release, Till Death, a short psychological thriller, was my first attempt at self-publishing so I’ve been busy learning all the things, including getting to a gorgeous cover. Author and cover artist, Alison Hendrickson, made a wonderful cover. I thought it represented the story well, here’s the cover and blurb:

Honor, obey...or slay. To protect an innocent man, a dutiful wife challenges her vengeful husband…with disastrous results.

Gina believes that mirrors hold bits of the soul, a rabbit's foot brings good luck, and that marriage vows are until death. But most of all, she’s blindly followed her husband Rick’s philosophy. Nasty men get one chance to convert from their abusive ways —or suffer the consequences they bring upon themselves.

But when she meets George, Gina begins to question everything Rick has led her to believe about men. Now Rick has George lined up to be the next man to be redeemed. Will black widow Gina honor and obey and weave her web around George, or will she become the next victim?

I felt that the heart on the cover was symbolic to my protagonist’s struggle with desiring a healthy loving relationship even though she didn't quite understanding what that means, as well as her role in luring the what she considers a nasty man

But as I continued to learn all the things (between writing, and self-publishing, I think I will always be learning all the things) I started to play with creating Amazon Ads. I quickly learned that advertising through Amazon wasn’t going to happen with this cover.

It was felt that my beautiful cover had ‘excessive gore or violence’ and therefore I couldn’t create ads for Amazon with this cover.

Keep in mind that this story is one of 13 other authors featuring murder, mystery and mayhem and revolving around Friday the 13th. A date considered ominous or unlucky by many, and also known for some frightful films.

So despite adoring my first cover, my books had to be more than just what I loved, but also what readers expected and loved. That meant it was back to the drawing board for a new cover for Till Death that would still capture the ‘heart’ of the story but wouldn’t be tagged for appearing too violent.

My cover artist came through once again, and here’s the updated cover for Till Death.

But like both my babies at home, it’s hard for me not to love both covers.

More Adventures in Rebranding: Cover Reveal

Posted by: PG Forte

One of the things keeping me busy lately has been the challenge of re-releasing twenty books. That’s just this year’s total, by the way. Which, coming on the heels of last year’s ten titles, has meant an overhaul of my entire backlist—less one.

It’s been an interesting experience. I’m basically re-inventing myself as an author; and I’ve been learning a lot in the process.

One of the lessons I learned from last year’s bulk re-release was that rushing books back into print en masse, isn’t always a good idea. Book birthdays should be celebrated—and that’s hard to do when you’re releasing several at once. In fact, having tried it that way has kind of made me appreciate what parents of quintuplets (and other multiples) must go through. So this year I’ve been taking things more slowly. I’ll be releasing books individually and with (hopefully) a little more attention than last year’s books received.

With that in mind, I’d like to show off my new cover for IRON.

IRON (which I plan to re-release next month) is the story of a mortal man—a blacksmith, by the name of Gavin O’Malley—who reluctantly comes to the aid of a faery princess. I remember the exact moment the story presented itself to me. I was taking part in an online chat and someone posed the question: “What unlikely pairing would you like to write about?”

Given that the Fae are well known to have an aversion to iron, and blacksmiths make their living with the stuff, I thought crafting a Happy Ever After for the two of them was pretty damned unlikely.  And, in fact, some people have argued that what I gave them didn’t count as an HEA at all. I disagree, of course, but everyone’s entitled to their opinion.

In any case, I have always loved this book. It was the first truly stand alone book I wrote. However, I think I must really hate the idea of my books being lonely, or something, because I immediately had to invent a series for it to belong to. The four books in the so-called Celtic Legends series are all standalone stories that have nothing to do with one another other than having a vaguely similar setting: Ireland in the late 1800s; and sub-genre: somewhere along the fantasy/paranormal spectrum.

Book two in the series, OAK, which was previously released as The Oak King, is the story of a mortal woman who falls in love with both the Oak King and the Holly King—two Celtic deities that I’ve re-imagined as tree spirits.  That will also probably be re-released this year.

The other two books I have yet to write, but I hope to have at least one of them out by early next year. Selkie features a reclusive fisherman who rescues a wounded seal shifter; while Flight involves two childhood friends who are finally forced to confront their feelings for each other when they become involved with an owl shifter.

Covers for the other three books are also in the works—which is very exciting. One of the best parts of re-branding is the need for yummy new covers.  Such a hardship!

Nineteenth century Ireland. Blacksmith Gavin O'Malley is a bitter man, with a heart as hard as the iron he forges. He wants his life back—the one that was stolen from him the day his wife died in childbirth—taking their firstborn son with her.

When Aislinn Deirbhile, an immortal, shape-shifting fae, arrives on his doorstep, he knows he's in luck. For Aislinn can give Gavin everything he's been missing: A devoted-seeming wife in the image of his beloved Mairead, and children who are sure to outlive their father. Now, all he has to do is find a way to keep her—without losing his immortal soul in the process.

But Aislinn has an agenda of her own. On the run from a vengeful fae lord who's vowed to either make her his or end her existence, she knows the iron that allows Gavin to take her captive will also keep her pursuers at bay. In order to put herself permanently beyond her enemy's reach, however, Aislinn will need something more. She'll need to win Gavin's heart and convince him to willingly part with a piece of the very soul he's trying to save.

Iron was selected as a Finalist for the EPIC 2011 ebook Awards in the Paranormal Erotic Romance category.

Guest Post: Marie Andreas SAPPHIRE MANTICORE Cover Reveal and Ongoing Madness of a Fantasy Series!

Posted by: Veronica Scott
Veronica: Today's guest author talks about her Lost Ancients series!

Marie: Hello and welcome to the mayhem! I am the author of a six-book fantasy series called The Lost Ancients.

It all began with The Glass Gargoyle:
Archeologist Taryn St. Giles has spent her life mining the ruins of the elves who vanished from the Four Kingdoms a thousand years ago. But when her patrons begin disappearing too—and then turning up dead—she finds herself unemployed, restless, and desperate. So she goes looking for other missing things: as a bounty hunter.
Tracking her first fugitive—the distractingly handsome and strangely charming Alric—she unearths a dangerous underworld of warring crime lords, demonic squirrels, and a long-lost elven artifact capable of unleashing a hell on earth.
Chased, robbed, kidnapped, and distressingly low on rent money, Taryn just wants one quiet beer and
to catch her fugitive. But there’s more to Alric than his wicked grin—is he a wanted man or the city’s only hope? With menacing mages in pursuit and her three alcoholic faery sidekicks always in her hair, Taryn’s curiosity might finally solve the mystery of the elves… or be the death of her and destroy her world.
Since then, two more books have been born: The Obsidian Chimera and The Emerald Dragon. More drunken faeries, hot elves, and beings bent on world destruction. You might think three books would be enough. But those damn drunken faeries got really toasted one night and pulled back the curtain on how huge this issue was, and their real role in it. Now this is a closed series- aka the entire thing is ONE giant story. Finding out that the faeries had been holding out on me, and doubled the tale of what happened, was a bit of a shock!
But, you gotta do what the voices tell you to do, so I dutifully sat down and began the next book, The Sapphire Manticore. The rest of the story will nicely round out with two more big healthy books beyond the Manticore. I SWEAR- this will be a hexalogy. Seriously, after what happens in book six, not even an armada of drunken faeries could keep going!
With all the craziness going around writing a trilogy, that was really a hexalogy, I thought this nice lovely blog might be a great place to do a cover reveal for The Sapphire Manticore. The faeries love this one—they finally bribed my cover artist to put them in—they’re the colored streaks going by.
Here’s where it all starts (excerpt from Glass Gargoyle):
Damn and double damn, Crusty Bucket was drunk again.
I looked around as a snippet of song rang out over the noise of the pub. A song sung by only one creature I knew—my faery, Crusty Bucket—and only when she was dangerously drunk. I had no idea where she was in the pub. The Shimmering Dewdrop was deep in a raging bar fight and, from the bodies littering the floor, it had started long before I pushed open the door. Pretty much the norm for a Saturday night . . . except this was Tuesday night and the mayhem seemed more focused than usual. The smell of spilled booze and cheap tallow candles was far stronger than it had been for a long time.
I took a deep breath and shook off some of the rain that had hounded me the entire way here.
Maybe I was wrong, maybe I hadn’t heard her. But again the high pitched singing flew over the noise of the fighting.
“Bring me the dancing minkies!”

I froze, wondering if anyone else heard it. Faeries aren’t beloved by most creatures—drunken ones are often hunted down and smashed. Not that they stay smashed, mind you.
The last thing I needed right now were my faeries out and about. And drunk. The main reason I’d taken this bounty hunting job to find this Alric person was to make sure those tiny hooligans and I stayed off the streets.
I’d been chasing him for the last two hours in the pouring rain, only to be told that he’d gone to ground in my pub. No, I don’t own the Shimmering Dewdrop, but I've spent plenty of time and cash here. The fact that the son of a hag was holed up in my home away from home was enough to annoy any self-respecting woman.
Crusty’s song trailed off—most likely she’d jumped into another bottle of ale—and I let myself ignore her for the moment. The thin whistling sound of a chair flying at me suggested that ignoring the pub fight would be more difficult. I ducked, then looked around to see that far more chairs were being used as weapons than as seating.
I didn’t have time to get involved in a fight right now. I needed to find Alric, deliver him to the wizard, Cirocco, and then pay my landlady with the bounty money. Otherwise, my faeries and I would be on the streets by tomorrow night. And it wouldn’t be long before they did something to land us all in jail.
Marie is a fantasy and science fiction reader with a serious writing addiction. If she wasn't writing about all the people in her head, she'd be lurking about coffee shops annoying total strangers with her stories. So really, writing is a way of saving the masses.
When not saving the masses from coffee shop shenanigans, Marie likes to visit the UK and keeps hoping someone will give her a nice summer home in the Forest of Dean. She has out the first three books of her humorous fantasy series—The Lost Ancients (mayhem, magic, and drunken faeries!) and the first book (Warrior Wench) in her space opera-The Asarlaí Wars.

To find out more about her books, and future series, please visit her website--especially if you happen to have a small cottage to give her.

Cover Reveal for ORIA'S GAMBIT!!!

Posted by: Jeffe Kennedy
Finally, it's here!

Book Two of my Sorcerous Moons series is ready to go! ORIA'S GAMBIT will be hitting the virtual shelves this week.

The book's been ready, but we've been tweaking the cover. And Louisa Gallie did an amazing job, as always. I'll put up the buy links as they go live.

A Play For Power
Princess Oria has one chance to keep her word and stop her brother’s reign of terror: She must become queen. All she has to do is marry first. And marry Lonen, the barbarian king who defeated her city bare weeks ago, who can never join her in a marriage of minds, who can never even touch her—no matter how badly she wants him to.

A Fragile Bond
To rule is to suffer, but Lonen never thought his marriage would become a torment. Still, he’s a resourceful man. He can play the brute conqueror for Oria’s faceless officials and bide his time with his wife. And as he coaxes secrets from Oria, he may yet change their fate…

An Impossible Demand
With deception layering on deception, Lonen and Oria must claim the throne and brazen out the doubters. Failure means death— for them and their people.

But success might mean an alliance powerful beyond imagining...

In the meanwhile, if you haven't yet picked up a copy of book one, LONEN'S WAR, then this is a good time to do it!

Veronica Scott's award-winning Wreck of the Nebula Dream audiobook received a good review from Audiobook Reviewer and there's a $25 Amazon gift card giveaway going on HERE.
Loosely based on the sinking of Titanic...

The story:

Traveling unexpectedly aboard the luxury liner Nebula Dream on its maiden voyage across the galaxy, Sectors Special Forces Captain Nick Jameson is ready for ten relaxing days, and hoping to forget his last disastrous mission behind enemy lines. He figures he’ll gamble at the casino, take in the shows, maybe even have a shipboard fling with Mara Lyrae, the beautiful but reserved businesswoman he meets.

All his plans vaporize when the ship suffers a wreck of Titanic proportions. Captain and crew abandon ship, leaving the 8000 passengers stranded without enough lifeboats and drifting unarmed in enemy territory. Aided by Mara, Nick must find a way off the doomed ship for himself and several other innocent people before deadly enemy forces reach them or the ship’s malfunctioning engines finish ticking down to self destruction.

But can Nick conquer the demons from his past that tell him he’ll fail these innocent people just as he failed to save his Special Forces team? Will he outpace his own doubts to win this vital race against time?

YA FANTASY, BOOK TWO OF OTHERSELVES

Behind the mirror lies your otherself…

There is one True World, and then there are the four Mirror Worlds: Fire, Water, Air, and Stone.

Audrey and Dorotea are “otherselves”—twin copies of each other who live on different Mirror Worlds.

On Air, Audrey has the ability to communicate with wind spirits. As war looms, she’s torn between loyalty to her country and her feelings for a roguish phantom who may be a dangerous spy.

Blackouts and earthquakes threaten the few remaining humans on Stone, who have been forced to live underground. To save her injured sister, Dorotea breaks taboo and releases an imprisoned gargoyle. Brooding, sensitive Jasper makes her wonder if gargoyles are truly traitors, as she’s always been told.

Unbeknownst to them, they both face the same enemy—an evil sorceress bent on shattering all the Mirror Worlds.
