HERE BE MAGIC Celebrates Valentine's Day

Posted by: PG Forte

Once upon a time, several Here Be Magic authors got together to write an anthology. Take one metaphorical heart-shaped box. Hand it to eleven authors as a story seed. What do you get?

A porcelain music box. Candy. Magical stones. Love. Fairies. Demons. Brushes with horror. And cats. Of course, there are cats.

The Heart-Shaped Box is an 18,000 word paranormal anthology with stories by Danube Adele, Angela Campbell, Shona Husk, Jane Kindred, Nicole Luiken, RL Naquin, Shawna Reppert, Veronica Scott, Regan Summers, Shawna Thomas, and Jody Wallace.

Rated PG-13. Contains mild profanity, sexual references, and minor violence.

List of stories includes:

Story 1: Birthright by Shawna Thomas
Story 2: A Pledge of Devotion by Regan Summers
Story 3: Destiny in a Box by Angela Campbell
Story 4: Heart-shaped Box of Memories by Nicole Luiken
Story 5: The Silver Prison by Shona Husk
Story 6: The Knowing and the Myst by Danube Adele
Story 7: The Shape of His Heart by Jane Kindred
Story 8: Sherlock Holmes and the Secret of the Heart-Shaped Box By Shawna Reppert
Story 9: Violets in the Snow by Veronica Scott
Story 10: Unmatched Cupid by RL Naquin
Story 11: A Box Full of Faerie by Jody Wallace

And keep an eye out for a new story by Nicole Luiken featuring Brooke and Jon from Heart-shaped Box of Memories (currently in the works).

PG Forte has a Valentine's Day story available right now as part of a FREE Valentine's Day-themed collection, Just Another Day.  Download the collection at:

It includes the short storyPut a Ring Around the Rosie

February 14th is just another day...until it isn't.

They say timing is everything, and that certainly has always been the case where Alex and I are concerned. We were work spouses for a while, and then we weren’t. And when we reconnected with each other last month it was after a prolonged period of hurt feelings and miscommunication during which we barely spoke to each other at all.

Now, even though our friendship’s caught fire, so to speak, I feel like we’re both still recovering from that last, disconnected phase. Heaping a bunch of unrealistic expectations, or a need for chocolate hearts, plush toys, or rose colored anything on top of that seems like a little too much added pressure.

DARK
Aftermath Series Bk. 1
Apocalyptic/Post-Apocalyptic Romance
by Linda Mooney
Word Count: 52K
$3.99 e / $9.99 p / $19.95 a

Narrated by Matyas Job Gombos
Length: 6 hrs, 6 min

With threats of solar flares larger than anything ever recorded looming, everyone on Earth is scrambling to prepare. No one knows how severe the consequences will be. With little to no warning, the massive flares hit, wiping out power grids, frying everything electrical or battery-operated, and burning out most living beings, unless you were lucky enough to be deep underground or inside something that could withstand the unimaginable temperatures.

In the end, the Earth has been left in total, absolute darkness.

Having rekindled their romance after their failed marriage, Gideon doesn’t want to be apart from D’hani, but she lives in another town. The last time he talked to her, he vowed to come looking for her if/when the big one hits. Because he works for Brodwyn Light and Power, he must stick around to help restore power when the flares pass.

Barely escaping death, he leaves to find her, to see if she also managed to survive, but life has been forever changed. Survival is now reduced to scavenging for whatever food and water he can find, and that means only the fittest or smartest will stay alive.

But some survivors have been reduced to savages.

Has humanity completely turned on itself? It seems there are still a few good ones left, though they are very few and far between. If Gideon can find D’hani, they’re going to search for a place where they can spend the rest of their days, however long that may be.

Although it may be the end of the world, their last wish is for them to be together.

Warning! Contains a natural spring, strawberry shit, a piece of porcelain and a rock, treachery, everlasting night, a dead sun, illegal stills, and two people being given a second chance at life and love.

A Whole New World...

Posted by: PG Forte

A funny thing happened on the way to tying up a loose thread. Initially, when I wrote and released Light Up the Night as a shorter story than originally planned (in order to fit the length requirements of the anthology it was scheduled to appear in), I figured I'd go back and add a few scenes in alternate POVs, expand a little on what was already there, and be done with it.

Not so fast, said my muse. These couple of scenes and alternate POVs are not so much a subplot as a whole separate story. A story in which your vampires must confront a werewolf pack. How is that going to fit in with the sweet friends-to-lovers, age gap vampire Christmas story you've got going on?

Well, she was right. Muses generally are, after all. So I looked around, noticed that someone was putting together a shifter-themed newsletter builder.  Perfect, I thought. I'll write a second short story--vampires vs werewolves--and release it in that.

So, I signed up. I thought up a title for the new story, created a cover for it, and wrote down a quick outline, and...a somewhat ridiculous amount of time later. Weeks, at least. Probably more like months. It occurred to me that, fabulous as this story is, and happy though I am to be giving my h/h an HEA...this is a book about vampires who have some dealings with werewolves. And the anthology I've signed myself up for is allllll about the shifters.

So. Back to the drawing board.

Ya know what...my muse had the nerve to say, at that point, peeking out from wherever she'd been sneakily hiding. Vampires and werewolves practically beg for the Romeo and Juliet treatment--different ending, of course. Why don't you have one of your vampires fall in love with one of the werewolves.

Now, I'm getting annoyed because this is supposed to be a short story. If I add a whole new subplot to it, I'm right back where I started, with a long ass book. Also: A, all of the vampires that were slated to be in the story are already spoken for and B, how does this love story end? Does the werewolf leave home to be with their insta-love vampire? Does my vampire leave the nest and move in with a werewolf pack? At Christmas time???

It was at about this point that DepositPhoto ran one of their sales. And, armed with fresh credits I  went on a cover search (for an entirely different story, of course) and...I found my story. And it's nothing like I  thought it would be...well, it does have sort of a Romeo and Juliet vibe. Not the happy kind, either. It's got a Cinderella vibe, too, but that's beside the point. It involves an entirely new vampire, and it takes place at least several weeks before the original story does, so that these characters get to come in and play a brief part in that story, too.

And, of course, now I have a whole new series to write and a whole new shifter world to play in.

Here's the blurb. And a version of the cover--it's the start of a whole new series, it needs a new look. Font choices are still in the "well, I kind of like that. I think," stage.

The Sierra Nevada foothills have been vampire Josiah Lodge’s hunting grounds for nearly two centuries. Alone since a lover’s betrayal cost him his nest, the former trapper-turned-wild-crafter has given up on ever again finding love or acceptance. If he didn’t have to eat, he’d never venture out of his woods again. But needs must.

When Coldpelt (Cole) Moonwalker’s true shifter nature asserted itself, he was judged an abomination and cast out of his pack. Without a territory to call his own, he’s constantly on the move, constantly in danger—which is how he ends up passed out and injured on Josh’s front porch. While Cole dreams of someday finding a place where he can belong, he knows that place can never be with the scarred and surly vampire who undoubtedly has the blood of Cole’s people on his hands.

Will the attraction they feel for one another allow these natural enemies to overcome their sense of mutual distrust? Is enemies with benefits even a thing? Find out when the FREE anthology Shifter Fever debuts April 1st.

CIRCUS

Traveling with the circus since he was twelve, the carny life was all Toby Pach knew, the only place he fit in. From strong man to clean-up crew, he had many jobs, but he spent most of his time working with the elephants, who he had more in common with than most people knew.

When Toby sees the newest act and member of the family, a dark-haired beauty named Kai, he's enamored. Could she be the one who will accept both sides of him?

Kai Omanpang, one half of a knife-throwing act, is tired of traveling from one Big Top to another. She's ready to settle down, ready to put down some roots, but she can't convince her father of that. Maybe this circus will be different, and they will be part of the main event after all. When she meets Tobias the Mighty, she's intrigued by the gentle giant, but he has secrets.

With an unexpected onslaught of protesters, shootings, and a string of bad luck, something's got to give. Is it the newcomers' fault? Or is it time to hang up the ringmaster hat once and for all? Circuses are a dying pastime, but the memories they incur will last a lifetime.

Warning! Contains shattered glass, vengeful head-butting, shared secrets, carving watermelons from fifteen feet away, chili and beans (and meatloaf on Tuesdays!), physical and emotional loss, and one man fighting himself to let the woman he's come to love learn his darkest secrets.

Top Five Standalone Books of 2022

Posted by: Nicole Luiken

Most of the books I read are in series. Last year I started reading 45 new series and finished reading 29 series. But sometimes a stand-alone novel can really hit the spot. Here are my top five from last year's reading.

1/ Nettle & Bone by T. Kingfisher

Strong voice and humour mix with a serious adult quest in this fairytale-ish fantasy. Enough ingredients from fairytales to give it a distinct feel--impossible tasks, faerie godmothers at christenings, and princesses--yet enough unique elements like the dust-wife and the blister land to still create a sense of wonder.

2/ Dweller on the Threshold by Sklya Dawn Cameron

Strong voice and chapter one hook, rising tension, lots of spooky scenes and an AMAZING ending/solution--everything I wanted but didn't know I wanted. (And yes, I can confirm, the cats are both fine.)

3/ Winter of Ice and Iron by Rachel Neumeier

An electric chapter one put me permanently in the Wolf Duke's camp. A tortured hero who tries so HARD is so my jam. The magic system felt fresh and new and the pages flew by.

4/ Into the Broken Lands by Tanya Huff

I'm a long-time Tanya Huff fan. This one grabbed me very early on, once I found out the secret of the "weapon". Strong characters, lots of peril and interesting magic happening across two timelines.

5/ Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir

Absolutely riveting beginning, good voice, and high stakes made this a page turner. Also lots and lots of science, so if you liked the Martian, you'll probably like this. A lovely twist around the mid-point that I didn't see coming because I followed my usual practice of avoiding the blurb.
