Witches, Kitty Cat Shifters and a Giveaway!

Posted by: Unknown
It’s October, the month for spooky stories! To celebrate, I’ve got something slightly spooky to give away. Instructions for entry to win a copy of my novella Best in Show are just before the excerpt. Good luck and Happy October!
I don’t really write spooky stuff—though some of my readers might not share that opinion. I do put my characters in pretty awful situations from time to time, aliens who subsume human souls and evil doctors aside. I have written a story about witches, though. Or the family of a line of witches.

Macavity Birch is the son of a witch and a kitty cat shifter. When it comes to magic, he’s not terribly gifted. He can weave a couple of useful charms. When it comes to mischief, however, he’s a rare talent. Unfortunately, his latest prank has unintended consequences. His great, great, great aunt Clara—who is a gifted witch—feels it’s time he learned a lesson. So she curses him to be stuck in kitty cat form from sunrise to sunset. One mishap leads to another and Mac finds himself locked away in an animal shelter.
Julian Wilkes, on the other hand, isn’t gifted at all. He’s a rather ordinary human being and doesn’t really have any complaints about it. He does like to tell exciting stories, though. He’s a mystery writer and in a bit of a slump. He’s single and feeling rather lonely, and hasn’t written anything in nearly two years. Then he stumbles across the diary of a witch and the ideas start popping up again.
Left to his own devices, Julian would happily fall into a fugue of research and maybe start writing a new book. His sister has other ideas. She thinks he needs a pet. Someone to keep him company. Mostly to keep her quiet, Julian adopts a big ginger tom cat from the animal shelter. It’s Mac, of course, and he’s not too fond of the name Marmalade. As he’s cursed to be in cat form, there isn’t much he can do about it during the day. The night, however, is his time, and in this scene, we see that being cursed hasn’t really dampened his ability to play a prank or two.
Enjoy this excerpt from Best in Show! To enter to win a copy, leave a comment below with your email address and what sort of animal you’d like to be if you were a shape shifter. Entries accepted until Sunday 10/16/16, 11:59 PM EST.
@@@@@@@@@@
Showered and dressed, Julian went downstairs to make coffee and breakfast. He opened the fridge for something to put on his bagel. The chicken he’d roasted the day before was missing a leg. He didn’t remember eating it, which ticked him off a little. Food should be savored, not nibbled on absently. Julian reached past the chicken for a package of cream cheese and the lox.
Marmalade joined him in the kitchen just as he finished unwrapping the salmon. “Smelled the fish, did you?” Julian smiled down at the cat. “If you let me pet you, I’ll share it.”
The way Marmalade cocked his head, Julian could swear he was considering the proposal. He stepped on the pedal to open the trash and dropped the empty packet inside. Something clanked. Julian depressed the pedal again and peered down into the bin. Two empty beer bottles poked up out of the trash.
Julian looked at Marmalade. “Have I adopted the world’s first beer-drinking cat?”
Marmalade lifted a paw and began to lick it.
“Bottles go in the recycling, just so you know for next time.”
Not that there would be a next time, because a) cats didn’t drink beer and b) Marmalade would be hard pressed to open the refrigerator, impressive set of claws notwithstanding. The question of who had drunk the beer circled Julian’s thoughts as he transferred the pair of bottles to the recycling bin in the laundry. Alicia had been his only visitor, and she didn’t usually drink beer. Was he eating and drinking distractedly now? Madeleine Lingwood’s diary had held him captive yesterday evening. Hours had passed while he was caught up in her story, and he couldn’t actually recall what he’d eaten for dinner.
Chicken and beer, apparently.
Marmalade enjoyed the salmon, and Julian enjoyed feeding it to him. At first, the cat refused to take it from his fingers, but when Julian held firm, Marmalade pulled each piece delicately from his grasp. After breakfast, he rubbed his side along Julian’s leg and held still while Julian stroked his back, head to tail. He did not purr.
Julian took his coffee to his study and sat down at the desk. The diary called to him, but given the fact he’d apparently lost time yesterday, he should check his e-mail first.
His desktop wallpaper was different. Grainy in quality, the scene looked as though it had been captured from a film. It featured two men locked together in a passionate embrace. Cheeks burning, Julian immediately switched the image out for the painting he had been using, but even the almost kiss seemed too sensuous. He blanked the desktop entirely, settling for a blue background, and pushed back from the desk. The hectic pace of his thoughts matched his pulse. He was embarrassed, annoyed, vaguely turned on, and frightened. He looked around the den, but nothing else seemed out of place.
Had someone been in his house last night? In his kitchen and at his desk?
Rolling his chair forward again, he reached for the mouse. His browser history showed nothing unusual, but that proved little. His intruder could have browsed incognito or deleted select items from the history afterward. He ran a backward search on the new image and got eleven pages of results. None of the links were that paler shade of blue indicating a click.
Julian glanced at the diary. Had Madeleine Lingwood decided to haunt him? Local lore insisted she’d been the real thing. An actual witch. She’d been hanged for it. Even someone not imbued with power would be a restless spirit after such a violent death. Julian picked up the old book, tugged at the ribbon marking his page, and reread the entry he’d stopped at the night before.
They will come for me. Clare warned me it would come to this, but I could not let it go. Sebastian was my heart! I feel as if his death has robbed me of life. So if I am to die, if they will hang me for such things as I have done, then so be it. We will be together, my sweet Sebastian. In this life or the next.
What Madeleine had done was the cornerstone of the Lingwood legends. She’d stolen the body of one Sebastian Pritchard from the Lingwood Cemetery. Rumor had it she’d planned to resurrect him. She’d been arrested and tried for the crime of body snatching and, of all things, necrophilia. The Pritchard family had brought the further claim of necromancy against her, but that one had been thrown out by the judge. The Salem witch trials had been over and done with two hundred years earlier, after all. She’d been sentenced to an out-of-state institution. The night before she was to depart, however, she’d been taken from Lingwood Manor by a mob and hanged from the elm in the front garden.
The legends and stories began with her death. The families of those attending the hanging had suffered disease, misfortune, and untimely demise. Many had moved away, but the Lingwood family remained. They still lived in the house on the hill. They opened the place to occasional tours and apparently laughed off tales of hauntings. Otherwise the Lingwoods were a circumspect lot. No one could say exactly who lived at the manor, and rumor had it the ghost of Madeleine appeared in the gable windows on the eastern side every full moon.
Julian found her story sadly fascinating. Lingwood didn’t trade on its past the way some other towns did. In fact, stories about the Lingwood Witches were difficult to find, as if the town had collectively decided to sweep them beneath its cracked slate sidewalks. Hence the diary being such an important find. No one had known why Madeleine stole Sebastian Pritchard’s body. Rumors of a romantic affair had only surfaced after her death. The story Julian had read so far tugged at his heart.
Movement at the periphery of his vision startled him. He rocked back in his chair, biting his tongue in the process. The taste of copper filled his mouth. Wincing at the sudden pain, he put the book down and reached for something he might use to defend himself. He had a choice between several pens, a lamp, his laptop, and a staple remover.
Marmalade was sitting on the corner of his desk.
“Was that you? Jesus, you scared the living daylights out of me. I was about to attack you with a staple remover.”
Marmalade looked at the staple remover as he spoke. Right at it, no mistake. His whiskers twitched.
A cold shiver raced across Julian’s shoulders and down his spine. He pushed away from the desk, stood, and took a step back. The diary suddenly felt heavy in his hand. He tossed it toward the desk and crossed his arms, hugging his torso.
“First the bottles, then my wallpaper, now a cat who…. No, I’m not going nuts. Maybe Alicia is right. Maybe I just need to get out more. Socialize. Make some friends.” Get over the fact his last lover had left him for someone sexier. Start living again.

The cat had his head cocked to one side. Not able to shake the feeling Marmalade was not only listening but understood him, Julian stalked out of the den. He needed a moment. He also needed more coffee. He tiptoed back in to retrieve his empty mug and found Marmalade had migrated across his desk to where the journal lay. Julian snatched up the book and tucked it under his arm. He didn’t want to read the journal, not right then. But neither did he want to entertain the thought that Marmalade might.

If You Could Be Any Animal…

Posted by: Unknown

Best in Show releases today. It’s the story of a mystery writer who adopts a big ginger tabby from the animal shelter, only to discover his new pet is actually a man, cursed to be a cat during daylight hours.  It’s cute and funny and has a little mystery wrapped around a sweet love story. Or the beginning of a love story. I have more adventures planned for Julian and Mac!

While writing this story, I thought about what other sorts of shifters I’d like to introduce to my world and this led to wondering what sorts of animals I’d like to be. This isn’t as frivolous a question as it might seem. If no one had ever wished to fly like a bird, we may not have aircraft. If no one had ever wished to see the bottom of the ocean, we would not have a vast array of equipment designed to help us explore the deep. Granted, human ingenuity has yet to meet a border it does not want to cross—but if it were simply that, people wouldn’t still be experimenting with flapping wings and gliders. We wouldn’t wear fins and sleek suits in the water. We wouldn’t have entire organisations devoted to the love of animals—from Furries to animal rights activists to scientists who believe jellyfish hold the key to regenerating lost limbs.

Of course, borrowing ideas from the animal kingdom is quite different to actually wanting to be an animal—which I think the majority of us have thought about, even briefly. Who hasn’t looked at a cat curled upon a bedspread and thought ah, to be able to nap all day! I certainly have. I’ve even stated out loud (because I’m weird) my intention to mimic one of my cats one day. All day. To eat when he does, play when he does, and nap right beside him. After counting the actual number of hours Jack sleeps, however, I figured I’d get pretty bored before the morning was out. Also, I don’t particularly want to eat kibble.

One of my favourite shows when I was growing up was Man from Atlantis. The summer of 1977 was spent with my legs pinned together, body undulating furiously beneath the water, as I attempted to adopt his swimming style.

The majority of the Tarzan movies were made before I was born, but that has never interfered with my fascination for the “ape man”. It’s a wonderful story, and one that requires an entire blog post on its own. (Some day!) But the idea of having lived with the animals, of being able to communicate with them, appeals. His was not a gentle existence, but perhaps until his “rescue”, more simple.

I have flying dreams all the time and they’re a definite favourite. I flap and soar, and the feeling of cutting through the air is awesome!

I’ve thought about being a horse or a zebra or a big cat, a cheetah because they can run fast, or maybe a leopard simply because they are beautiful. The structure of wolf society fascinates me. Who knows what the dolphins are actually thinking. Snakes seem to do a lot of lying about in the sun. Octopi can hold eight different snacks at once. Elephants are magnificent. Turtles live for a long, long time.

But if pressed, I think I’d still choose a cat. I really do like napping, and I think having someone stroke my back would feel pretty awesome. I’d also want to be adopted and cared for by someone who enjoyed my company. Who spoke to me, fed me something other than kibble and invited me to cuddle with them at night.

What would you be?

Solitary mystery writer Julian Wilkes doesn’t want a pet, but his sister persuades him to visit Lingwood Animal Rescue, where he is immediately taken with a large ginger tabby cat. Before he can settle into the joys of cat ownership, however, he discovers something very unusual about his new companion.

Macavity Birch is cursed. By day he is a large tabby cat. At night he can be himself—a human male with ginger hair and oddly yellow eyes. He didn’t mean to end up in the animal rescue, but he never meant any harm when playing the prank that resulted in his curse, either. Happily, Julian adopts him. But while exploring his host’s home, he discovers the diary of a long-dead relative.

Unfortunately, not all of Mac’s ancestors are dead and buried. His great-great-great-grandmother is very much alive, and she’s a powerful witch who doesn’t take kindly to the sharing of family secrets. When Mac reveals himself to Julian in order to save him from bigger trouble, he achieves just the opposite, plunging Julian deeper into a magical mystery with him.

New from Kelly Jensen: Counting Fence Posts

There are over two hundred thousand fence posts between Syracuse and Boston. Henry Auttenberg likes numbers—it’s his job—but he isn’t going to count them all, even if the view outside the rental car is less confounding than the driver, his attractive but oh so obnoxious colleague, Marcus Winnamore. It’s Christmas Eve and Henry would much rather be home with his family. When the blizzard that grounded their flight forces them off the road, however, he’s stuck with Marc until the storm passes—or a plow digs them out.

As the temperature outside plummets, the atmosphere inside the car slowly heats up. Henry learns the true reason for Marc’s chilly distance—he’s not exactly straight…maybe…and he’s been fantasizing about Henry’s mouth, among other things. Confession laid out, Marc is all for sharing body heat…and more. Henry isn’t interested in being an experiment, but as the night and cold deepen, he could be convinced to balance certain risk against uncertain reward.

When Was the Last Time

Posted by: Unknown
Romance shouldn’t end with an exchange of rings. After the wedding comes the honeymoon. Usually. Not everyone spends three days in a U-Haul driving from Pennsylvania to Texas. Some people get tropical vacations. You know, romance (side-eyes husband). Then most of us settle into the rest of our lives.

That’s basically what happens to Paul and Evan in my novella When Was the Last Time. They meet, fall in love and set out to journey through life together. They buy their forever house, plan and complete some renovations, and enjoy Sundays on the couch in front of the game, a bowl of pretzels between them. They haven’t fallen out of love. They’ve simply fallen into that comfortable place a couple often finds themselves in after fifteen years together. It’s a great place. I happen to love it.

But what happens when that comfortable place becomes complacent? When intimacy slips between the couch cushions and gets lost with that old hairbrush and a handful of coins?

How do you get back to that honeymoon stage—without the U-Haul?

Well, you don’t, not exactly. That’s new love. What you have after fifteen years is a deeper love. A changed love. That means finding your way to a new kind of intimacy—and it can’t be easy, or I wouldn’t have a story to write!

In the following excerpt from When Was the Last Time, Paul has tried to make dinner for Evan. He burned the salmon and his hand and set off the smoke alarm. He’s frazzled and a little depressed by the fact his first attempt to rekindle the romance between him and his partner has failed dismally.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

They didn’t talk while Evan cleaned and dressed his hand. Evan appeared absorbed by his task, and Paul had a permanent lump blocking his throat. His thoughts shifted from worrying over the state of his relationship to a more selfish purpose—his emotional fragility. He felt weary, drawn, and breakable. How had one comment from Evan, at breakfast no less, sent him into such a tailspin?
Maybe he simply needed to connect with Evan physically. Stop thinking and just do.

He stood and followed Evan to where they stowed the first-aid kit, preparing to hug him from behind. Nibble on his neck, the lobe of his ear. Breathe across the fine hairs there until they stood on end. He’d grind forward, thrust into the waiting curve of Evan’s ass. Tell him he loved him, needed him, desired him. That he needed to fuck him, right now.

Who said romance always needed to be sweet?

Evan turned, suddenly, and their heads smacked together, right at the temple. Thick darkness followed bright light as large black blobs swallowed the stars dancing in front of Paul’s eyes. Distantly, he heard a soft curse and a bark of laughter.

“Jesus. Paul…. Hey. Sit. Wow….” Evan guided him back to one of the tall stools by the narrow island in the middle of their kitchen. “What were you doing right behind me?”

It was either laugh or cry. Paul chose laughter. It hurt. His head pounded with each chuckle, and the kitchen grew brighter and dimmer, as if he were a faulty circuit. That thought only had him laughing harder. Louder.

Beside him Evan smiled and chuckled. Even laughed a couple of times. He sobered when Paul touched the distinct red mark at his temple.

“I’m sorry,” Paul said.

Evan took his fingers and kissed them. “I know you are.”

Paul tugged on Evan’s hand until their faces were level and leaned forward to kiss the mouth he loved beyond all reason. The angle was awkward. Before their lips touched, their noses collided. Persisting in his purpose, Paul lifted his chin… and hesitated as a ripple of uncertainty pushed through him. No, not now. He wasn’t going to try and remember the last time he’d kissed Evan properly and with heat. Breathing in, he captured Evan’s full lips. The taste he could never forget invaded his senses. Evan, Evan, Evan! His lover’s name chased away such things as memory and regret.

Relinquishing one lip, he sucked on the other, the fuller, lower one. He nipped and tugged. Evan’s surprised outward breath tickled. Smiling, Paul dove in again, deepening their connection. He invited Evan’s tongue out to play, and they chased each other through the warm enclosure of their mouths, sighing, gasping, murmuring softly.

The alarm over their heads bleated once, the sound small and petulant, but it was enough to break the spell. Looking up, Paul noted the light blinking in the center.

Evan looked up too, afternoon stubble scraping gently across Paul’s lips as he did so. “Good thing the battery lasted long enough for you to burn dinner,” he said. “Otherwise I might have come home to find our beautiful kitchen destroyed.”

He meant it as a joke, but the words felt sharp. They both knew it was unlikely Paul would have burned down the kitchen. Yes, he was absentminded. But while he might have choked on smoke before setting fire to their kitchen, Evan had unwittingly pointed out the fault that had let their relationship burn down to a banked ember: His distraction. His preoccupation. His assumption that the world would continue to turn around and beneath him while he pursued his career.

“I love you, Evan.”

Evan looked back down from the ceiling, surprise making his eyes wide. Then he smiled. “I know you do.”

So why didn’t he say it back?

When Was the Last Time

Paul Summerfield is stunned by the gentle reminder it has been over a year since he and his partner, Evan, have made love. He vows to take Evan out for Valentine’s Day. Dinner and sex. Lots of sex. There’s only one catch—he’s supposed to be in San Francisco that week cataloging the art collection of an important new client. No problem, he’ll just change his schedule and cut his trip short by a day.

In San Francisco, Paul struggles with regrets and the fear his love is slipping away from him. Every call to Evan seems only to prove the distance between them is increasing. All this, and a key piece of his client’s catalog is caught up in customs. To keep their Valentine’s date, Paul will have to choose between the career he’s built over fifteen years and the man he’s loved for just as long.

Meg Antille works long hours on the charter cruise ship Far Horizon so she can send credits home to her family. Working hard to earn a promotion to a better post (and better pay), Meg has no time for romance.

Marooned on the dangerous outback world, romance is the least of their concerns, and yet Meg and Red cannot help being drawn to each other once they see how well they work together. Wedding Week - Impending Joyousness

Posted by: Jenn Burke
I thought it would be fun to do a bit of flash fiction on the theme of futuristic weddings. This isn’t set in any particular universe, but I hope you enjoy it!

---

Tas smiled as he spotted the couple nervously edging past the front door of MariBliss Marital Bliss Emporium. A moment later, he caught movement across the shop out of the corner of his eye that flattened the smile into a scowl. Oh hell no, New Guy was not stealing this commission from him!

Walking—not running, because that would not be cool—Tas beat out New Guy by seconds. He ignored his coworker and turned a brilliant smile on the couple, who were holding hands as though their lives depended on it. He didn’t blame them—all the promotional holos and flashing lights could be a little overwhelming at first.

“Welcome!” Tas said, throwing his arms wide. “We’re so happy you’ve chosen MariBliss for your impending joyousness. I’m Tas, and I’ll personally make sure that your day is absolutely perfect.”

The taller woman of the two smiled back, but the expression was hesitant, as though she wasn’t sure what she had gotten herself and her fiancée into when they stepped through the door. Clearly she needed some convincing that she’d gotten them into pure awesomeness. “Uh, hi. I’m Mosan and this is Awny. We want to get married?”

“Doesn’t everyone on Dove 9? MariBliss offers the best experience on the planet. Whatever you want, whatever you need, whatever you desire.” Considering that Dove 9’s main draw was its destination weddings, that was saying something. Tas waggled his brows and swept an arm toward the showroom behind him, just narrowly missing New Guy—who was still hovering like a dog looking for scraps. Pathetic. “Do you have any ideas about what you’re looking for?”

“It will be a small ceremony,” Awny said, her voice soft but melodious. “Our families couldn’t make it.”

“That’s a shame. We—”

“We can connect them with holos,” New Guy piped up.

Tas glared at him, then turned a smile back to the couple. “Yes. We can connect them with holos, that’s not a problem.”

“And I’d like something…I don’t know…” Mosan waved the hand not clutched in her fiancée’s death grip.  “Magical.”

New Guy snapped his fingers. “Flutterbirds! They’d be perfect—they’ve got gossamer wings, they’re small, and they shift colour—”

Tas clenched his jaw, about to tell New Guy to go do something else, when Mosan nodded. “They sound wonderful!”

“Flutterbirds it is,” Tas said, trying to recover his smile. “When do you want the ceremony?”

Awny grinned at her fiancée. “By the end of the week would be perfect. That would give us time to have a honeymoon, too.”

“We have packages for that as well—”

“Crystal Lake and Gardens is available!” New Guy said, looking up from the tablet he’d used to access venue availability. “Oh, the flutterbirds with the crystals and the lighting—magical doesn’t even begin to describe it.”

No, magical described what Tas was going to do to New Guy for stealing his freaking commission. “Why don’t you go ahead and book that, then? Make sure you use my name.”

“I found it.”

“These are my customers.”

New Guy glared. “Only because you have longer legs than I do.”

“That’s not my fault, is it?” Tas’s smile widened as he regarded the happy couple again. “Now, what colours are you considering?”

“Pastels would be perfect with your colouring,” New Guy said.

Tas gritted his teeth. “I think vibrant hues would be more suitable.”

“But with the flutter—”

“Vibrant. Hues. Make a note.”

“I’m not your assistant!”

Tas whirled on New Guy. “No, you’re a would-be thief who—”

“Aw, crap, Tas, you scared them off!”

Tas turned to see Mosan and Awny skittering out the door, taking the credits that could have been his with them. “That’s your fault.”

New Guy set his tablet on homing mode so it would hover back to its charging cradle. “My fault? You’re the one who was yelling…”

“Oh, for crying out loud, will the two of you just get a room, already?” one of their co-workers shouted across the showroom.

Tas eyed New Guy, lips set into a thin, firm line. He crossed his arms and fidgeted, still annoyed that they’d lost out on that commission. But maybe they could still salvage something from the day. “Usual spot?”

New G—Ralik’s eyes sparkled. “Yeah.”
