Some children are born with a mask, a birth caul, made of a thin membrane that covers their face. While these births are very rare, they do hold special significance. Stories and myths abound about the caul. Many are pure fabrication.
The correct name for children born with a caul is Caulbearer. Because the membrain looks like a thin veil, people born this way are referred to as being ‘born behind the veil.’
Men or women can be Caulbearers. They come from any social class, race or religious group. These births are not indigenous to any geographical boundaries. There is some indication that caul births tend to run in families. Statistics indicate there may be as few as one caul birth in 80,000 births.
Caulbearers are held in high regard because the time and place of these births can be calculated in advance. In addition, these people had abilities that were not common to many others. Some of their abilities include finding underground water, knowing when weather patterns will change, and predicting when food supplied will be plentiful.
Many are natural healers and are associated with the laying of hands. Many also have the ability to rule nations, and possess insights which other find difficult to understand. Many cultures consider Caulbearers to be "Kings by right" because their birth was predicted and they have fine leadership abilities. These traits are recognized by certain Buddhist groups who seek out Caulbearers to be the Dalai Lamas.
In ancient times, long before religious priests evolved, Caulbearers were held in high regard for their knowledge in many subjects and became the early priests and teachers. In the Middle Ages, Caulbearers were identified as witches and burned at the stake.
I found an interesting note. The word Caulbearer will not be found in the standard dictionaries. In the Middle Ages, when the Church eliminated anything they thought sacrilegious, most mention of Caulbearers was destroyed.
Famous Caulbeareres include: Lord Byron, Alexander the Great, Queen Christina of Sweden, Kahlil Gibran, Jesus, and Liberace. Fictional People include: David Copperfield, Hamlet, and Danny (Stephen King’s The Shining).
This was all wonderful background for my heroine in The Guardian's Witch. It is scheduled to be published this July. The story takes place in 1290 by the border of England and Scotland in 1290. Lord
Alex Stelton can’t resist a
challenge,
especially one with a prize like this: protect a castle on the Scottish border
for a year, and it’s his. Desperate for land of his own, he’ll do anything to
win the estate—even enter a proxy marriage to Lady Lisbeth Reynolds, the
rumored witch who lives there.
Feared
and scorned for her second sight, Lisbeth swore she’d never marry, but she is
drawn to the handsome, confident Alex. She sees great love with him but fears
what he would think of her gift and her visions of a traitor in their midst.
Despite
his own vow never to fall in love, Alex can’t get the alluring Lisbeth out of
his mind and is driven to protect her when attacks begin on the border. But as
her visions of danger intensify, Lisbeth knows it is she who must protect him.
Realizing they’ll secure their future only by facing the threat together, she
must choose between keeping her magic a secret and losing the man she loves.
Cool stuff. Another fictional Caulbearer is Alvin Maker in Orson Scott Card's Seventh Son.
ReplyDeleteYet another fictional Caulbearer is Frincie Nolan in A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith. I am reading this book and am fascinated with Caulbearers. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
ReplyDeleteI am a Caulbearer I have known this for many years as my mother told me about it when I was young, she was told the meaning of being a caulbearer by the midwife that delivered me. Mum was told that I would never drown & that sailors in Scotland would pay large sums of money to have the caul on their ship.It is only recently that I have started to realise the abilities I have are actually a part of being born a caulbearer. In some ways its great to have these abilities but it has also been a hard & sometimes frightening road.
ReplyDeleteThank you for this article
ReplyDeleteI was born as caul bearer , and I enjoy high level of sensitivity
I have healing abilities as well
but I feel lonely as most of the times
How do you heal others? I've been able to recover any sickness I've had faster than others but I haven't healed anyone and I'm a caul bearer. I had appendicitis when I was 13 and instead of it getting worse like most patients I recovered in less than a day without surgery or any type of medication.
DeleteAttune with nature, and the sun, and all forms of wild life, and you should never be lonely.

ReplyDeleteI am a caulbearer, My Mom told me as a child. But I was was raised as an ordinary child. I was recently reminded by my Aunt. It was then I realized why I would always feel like an outcast, or very sensitive towards everything. I always felt as though something was missing. It was latter that I learned it was because I did not have my caul. My mother is deceased, therefore, I will never know what actually happen to it. Today, I am learning more and more about me and how to live the life as a caulbearer, more specifically, dealing with the never ending dreams, and this busy brain!
ReplyDeleteI was born with the caul according to my mother ( now deseased ) She used to say that I was ' the special one', I often wondered why. I was born on the seventh under the sign of Leo. I am now 62 and recovering from two right side of the brain- strokes. I have spent some of my life in a rather dim kind of spotlight, but have not given much to the world in that I consider to be of value. I have had a lot of time since my strokes this summer, to think. I am a left- hander this condition has taken away my left side skills. I find it hard to write, draw or even play guitar, all things that are very important to me. Perhaps my time has not yet come
ReplyDeleteI to was born with 2 veils according to my mother,I also am left handed,I always have felt different,I guess its a small world,My mother told me that the delivery nurse was in awe of me having 2 veils, said she had never seen that,So i too am looking for more info on this .

ReplyDeleteI am a caul bearer 46 years of age, I see what the cat sees, I can manifest with pure intent, have many encounters with ghosts of multi dimensional beings as an observer, I don't perceive any info just an observers experience..i feel well guided here, prophetic dreams. it's been an amazing experience for me
ReplyDeleteI'm 36 years old male, i'm also a caul bearer. I ve told people over the years but they always have this blank look on their face. I know we are all different like very different and end result being lonely very alone. I hope my fellow caul bearers have had a better ride in life than I. Love to all my friends (and foes)
ReplyDeleteMy mother told me stories about over 30 years ago about my father being born with a veil over his face. And she remember as clear as yesterday that she saw a couple strange things dad did with his unknown powers that she never knew he had or could do! One was when she was looking for him one day and notice he was standing downstairs in the basement staring at the light bulb!....and while she didn't make a sound ..right before her eyes she saw that light bulb burst to pieces! she freaked out and ran before he saw her cause he was very abusesive to get and had mental problems. Another time was she saw him one day staring at his glass ash trays that they use to have in the 60s,..well dad was staring at it a long time till it broke in half! poor mom she didn't know what to think! Dad never talked to me about his abilities of whatever all he had and being a veil baby! He kept quiet about it till his death. To this day both my parents are gone ..and I'm beginning to wonder if I was born with one since my mother never said anything or kept quiet!..not that I can do what dad could..but more like a weatherwoman lol! I'm pretty good at it and I can sense bad person's & etc. But my Dreams & Visions always from the Lord as the Bible predicted to us as warnings & messages to show us signs and times leading to his soon coming! I look forward to the Rapture! So..here I've shared a little of my spooky veil stories and I'm sure there was more he did but I can only remember her telling me two.
ReplyDeleteBlessings! Stay close to the Lord! :)
I was born with a face caul, which was wrapped and placed on a ledge for safekeeping and was eaten by rats or roaches. After delivery, my mother thought I was born deformed, but the African midwife told her it was really a caul covering my face, and I would be able to see spirits (which I never did to this day). Now, because of this, I always thought that being born with the caul was an obscure African superstition and it was only recently I checked and discovered that it was a widespread yesteryear belief. Also, I was born on halloween in a continent with 13 countries, the 4th of 9 children and the sum of the digits of my birthday sum to 13. I am much troubled by the frequent recurrence of 13's throughout my life and often wonder about it. All of my life, because of certain events, I've always felt that there was a supernatural force guiding and protecting me, neutralising those who wished to harm me or punishing them, but I always dismissed this as the workings of my imagination. I became qualified in 7 professions, have written a number of unpublished books and have formulated over 1,000 unpublished proverbs. I worked in 5 countries and have packpacked all alone thru a significant part of our world without any problems. I have solved many mysteries, some so grave I can never reveal, and can extract amazing truths from just fragments of information. Because of this, I perceive the world very different from others. I also believe I can sense if a person is good or evil, and sometimes feel when some r conspiring against me, but I always leave it in the hands of the force that protects me and it does. I can often spot the folly of others in regards to the future and would warn them, but they never listen, and this has led me to believe that I too am suffering from the curse of Cassandra. I believe that I'm extremely lucky because of events during my life. I am compassionate, sensitive, secretive, aloof, serious, pensive, determined and a reasonably good person. And now that I have found out more about the caul, I feel magical. Cheers.
