So, What Is Ruth A. Casie Really Like?

Posted by: Ruth A Casie
I got this idea from award winning author, Kathryn LeVeque who got it from Liliana Hart - this is a fun way to get to know me!
1 -What is your Author name?
I write as Ruth A. Casie. I asked my children to give me a pen name. My older daughter offered, Olivia Alexander. It's a great name, the names of her children. I would have LOVED another name when I was about 8. I thought Ruth was... meh. Now, I wouldn't answer to anything else. My pen name turned out to be an mashup of pieces of their first names.
2 - What is the first book you ever published?
The first book I wrote was Knight of Runes
3- What is your publishversary?
Knight of Runes was published on November 14, 2011
4- What is the favorite book you've written thus far?
Each book has something that makes it my favorite, but if I had to choose one book it would be Knight of Rapture. Arik will move heaven and earth to be with his Rebeka.
5- What book took you the longest to write?
Knight of Rapture, in my Druid Knight series. I knew what I wanted this story to be, but it took me a long time to put it down on paper.
6- How long did it take you?
About 10 months for the first draft, but it will be eclipsed by a contemporary time travel story I’m working on intermittently that’s been in the works for over a year!
7- What kind of music (If any) do you listen to while you write?
I like soft jazz and classical when I’m writing. Nothing with lyrics. I get distracted or worse, I find snippets of lyrics in my writing. Really, no kidding.
8- Who is your favorite character from any of your books?
Rebeka from Knight of Runes and Knight of Rapture
Jamie Collins from The Highlander’s English Woman and The Guardian’s Witch.
Beth from The Games A’Foot featured in the contemporary collection Welcome to Havenport. She’s a romance author.
9- What are you currently working on?
The Highlander’s Sin, the fourth book in the medieval Stelton Legacy series. Also the first book in a new contemporary series, the one I’ve been working on for a year, Einstein's Theorem.
10- Do you have anything you snack on while you write?
I snack on lots of sparkling water, Crystal Light pink Lemonade and Hershey Kisses

11- What is your favorite quote or line from one of your books?
This is not a fair question. It’s like asking me to choose a favorite child. However, in The Maxwell Ghost I’ve put my favorite lines into memes. See for yourself.
12- Are you a self-published or traditional published author?
I’m a hybrid author published with Harlequin, Carina Press and self-pubbed under Timeless Scribes and Knight Media
13- What is your writing inspiration?
I enjoy telling stories. There are times I can see a picture or read an article and a story plays out in my head. I get some of my best ideas for stories or work out plot issues while I’m driving. If you want to hear about how the hero in The Highlander's English Woman got me out of a speeding ticket, leave me a comment below.
14- What genre do you write?
I write what I love to read, Medieval Historical Romance and Contemporary Romance.
15- Do you have any writing rituals?
Butt in chair, music on, write.
16- Do you have a specific place you write or time?
A year after my daughter got her own apartment. I commandeered her room and turned it into an executive office. I spend a lot of time in my office and I wanted it to be comfortable and mine. It’s filled with books, a large library table, did I say books, and a corner computer with two screens. Oh, and more books. I have found that my best time for working on deep POV is the morning and drafting and outlining in the afternoon.
17- Do you have any advice for inspiring writers?
Yes. My advice to new writers is finish the book. You can’t edit and make it beautiful until you have it on the page. Also, after you get the first book out, write the next one and the next. That was a hard lesson for me to learn.
18- What are your writing goals?
Create stories that people can’t put down.
19- What authors inspire you and your writing?
Barbara Michaels, Sarah MacLean, Julie Garwood, Johanna Lindsey, Clive Cussler, Tom Clancy
20- What will be your next release?
Love Between the Sheets, special edition of my Havenport stories about Beth and Jarred, March, 2017
The Highlander’s Sin, the next book in the Stelton Legacy, August, 2017
Snowbound in Havenport, October, 2017

Einstein’s Theorem is still *sigh* in development, but soon, I promise, soon!

Old World, New Series

Posted by: R.L. Naquin
It’s been nearly a year since I wrapped up my six-book Monster Haven series. If my main character, Zoey, shows up anywhere else, it’ll be in a short story or as a minor character. Her story is done.

Well, done enough. I admit, I left her pregnant with no word on the flavor of baby she was carrying. Girl? Boy? Reaper? Empath? Time Lord? In Monster Haven, anything is possible.

Characters died. Characters lived happily ever after. The world changed so completely, the Hidden no longer needed to stay hidden. I blew up their world, declared the story finished, and walked away.

Here I am, a year later with a new series in the same world. I’d left our nutty djinn, Kam, to walk the Earth alone, hoping to find herself so she could someday return to the djinn world. In my head, she was a mix of Sam Beckett from "Quantum Leap" and David Banner from the old "Incredible Hulk" series. How about a little sad walking away music for Kam at the end of each book in her series?

Except that Kam doesn’t roll that way. If she’s ever sad, it’ll last about twenty minutes, max, before she’s on to something else. After all, she’s lived over a hundred years. She’s seen things. She’s done things. And all those things buzz around in her head and send her thoughts off on a tangent in the worst, most inopportune times.

So, come join me on a brand new set of adventures. The old, beat-up pickup leaves any minute. Let’s hope it doesn’t break down and leave us stranded in the middle of nowhere. Or if it does, let’s hope the locals can tell us where to find the World’s Biggest Ball of Twine or a collection of Elvis’s underwear.

Kam loves side trips.

It won’t be all wild costumes and disjointed conversations about pie. People are going to die. But there’s no reason we can’t take some time to see the sights while we solve the murders.

(Fake spoiler: Zoey still hasn’t had her baby, so don’t expect Kam to tell you anything.)

New Releases

Fans of the Monster Haven series by R.L. Naquin will love this beguiling spin-off, featuring a trapped djinn caught in a hot mess of lost souls, fast food and otherwordly murder.
Kam is a soul chaser for the Hidden Government, a much harder job now that the Hidden look like everyone else. Broke, out of magic and sick of playing waitress in a pirate-themed dive bar, Kam jumps at a chance for an out-of-town mission.
A reaper—and his loaded soul stone—have gone missing. The stone contains souls that might get permanently stuck if Kam doesn't find it, like, yesterday. She tracks the reaper down to a food truck outside Kansas City, only to find a dead reaper and no soul stone in sight. Which means that someone who should be dead killed the reaper and is running around with a powerful magic item. Not good.

And apparently the killer is targeting food-truck owners that also happen to be Hidden. So the only thing to do is open her own truck and go undercover—goodbye Kam the Djinn, hello Mobile Food Entrepreneur—and hope that she and her new runaway friend won't be the next targets…

MINE UNTIL MIDNIGHT
A Sci-Fi Steampunk Western Romance
by Linda Mooney
Narrated by Guy Veryzer
Length: 4 hrs, 14 min

Hear a Sample

He gambled and won something more valuable than money. He won love.

It started off as a little R&R on a backwater planet. All Ruce Haulk wanted was a place where he could breathe some fresh air, have a stiff drink, and perhaps while away a few hours at a game of chance. He should have known better. Before he's aware, he's embroiled in the middle of a flesh-peddling scheme, and the woman he "wins" is someone he never expected to find.

The moment Remi Clysonne saw the stranger take on Yarnell and his men single-handedly, she knew he was her only chance at escaping. She doesn't blame him when he doubts her claim that she's there to bring Yarnell to justice. What's more, she suspects there may be another reason why he's reluctant to offer aid.

What should have been a brief layover quickly becomes an all-out struggle for survival as Haulk and Remi battle their way out of an increasingly tangled mess. But the secrets they're keeping from each other may tear them apart before they manage to get away from this world and to safety.

Warning! Contains a clothes swap, levitating locomotives, watery soup, a pretty silver star, thousand-degree heat, attack dirigibles, and two people totally unprepared for whatever the future might hold for them.

New Release STAR SURVIVOR Exclusive Excerpt

Posted by: Veronica Scott
Veronica Scott: I’ve finally written the long awaited sequel to Wreck of the Nebula Dream and I’m sharing an exclusive excerpt from my new release today.

The story:

The survivors of a terrible wreck meet again—but this time only one can survive.

They survived an iconic spaceship wreck together. She never expected to see him again … especially not armed to kill her.

Twilka Zabour is an interstellar celebrity. She built on her notoriety as a carefree Socialite who survived the terrible wreck of the Nebula Dream, and launched a successful design house. But now the man who gave meaning to her life, then left her, is back–this time for the worst of reasons. Will he kill her … or help her survive?

D’nvannae Brother Khevan survived the Nebula Dream in the company of a lovely, warm woman, only to be pulled away from her, back into his solitary life in the service of the Red Lady.  Now Twilka’s within his reach again–for all the wrong reasons. Khevan will do everything within his power to discover why Twilka has been targeted for assassination, and to save her.

But Khevan is not Twilka’s only pursuer. Will allies Nick and Mara Jameson arrive in time to aid the couple, or will Khevan and Twilka’s ingenuity be all that stands between them and death?

The excerpt:

The dreams she couldn’t escape for long were especially bad tonight. Twilka tossed and turned on the huge bed in the city’s most luxurious hotel, more than a little afraid to seek more sleep. She’d clawed her way out of the nightmare where she was surrounded by laughing, faceless drunks, intent on living their last few hours of life aboard the Nebula Dream by passing her around among themselves. In the dream, there was no help coming, no rescue, and she woke screaming. Heart pounding, she lay still for a moment before reaching for the glass of water at the bedside. Should she take the meds her doctor had given her to suppress the memories?

No, the prescription stuff made her into a robot who’d sleepwalk through tomorrow’s activities, and she needed all her wits about her in the negotiations. Taking the glass, she kicked her way free of the covers and strolled barefoot to the private terrace, high above the planet’s surface. Inhaling a deep breath of the flower-scented air, she took one tentative step onto the balcony, clutching the door handle with her free hand. Acrophobia was a bitch. As she sipped the water, she reflected on the irony that she, of all people, was reluctant to take a drug to quell the nightmares. “A legal one no less,” she muttered to herself. After years of enjoying all the feelgoods all the time with no regard for consequences.

The view of the city was breathtaking, all colorful twinkly lights at this hour. Raising her eyes to the plateau, she took a deep breath. The Red Lady’s oversize temple dominated the horizon, glowing ruby like a baleful eye. Shivering, wishing she’d put on her robe, Twilka pivoted to re-enter the room. With a stifled scream, she saw a dark shadow standing beside the bed. Breaking the water glass on the door frame and holding the jagged base fragment as a weapon, she said, “I’ve activated my personal panic button. The hotel’s security detail will be here in a minute. Leave now and I won’t press charges.”

He stepped into the moonlight. “We need to talk. Cancel the alarm.”

Khevan. She sagged against the balcony door, allowing the broken glass to roll from her hand onto the carpet. “I told you, we have nothing left to discuss. Anything between us died a long time ago.”

There was pounding on the door. “Miss Zabour?”

He didn’t even glance at the portal, intent on her. “Send them away.”

“The hotel has orders to check on me in person if the alarm is triggered.”

“Make it fast.” There was a flicker and she couldn’t see him any longer. If she squinted, the air shimmered with a faint distortion where he’d been.

Another D’nvannae trick. Giving the spot where he presumably stood a wide berth, she went to the door and opened it. Blaster in hand, the security chief scanned the room behind her. “Are you all right, Miss Zabour?”

“I’m fine. I had a nightmare and I was confused when I first awakened.” She lied with ease. There had been such incidents before.

“I’ll have to check the room.”

Stepping aside, she invited him to enter with a wave of her hand. “I broke my water glass, so watch out for the fragments.”

“I’ll have housekeeping send a robo to clean up the mess,” he said, moving through her suite with efficient speed. He scanned every possible spot a person could hide.

“In the morning will be fine. I need my sleep.” Twilka forced herself to fake an elaborate yawn.

The second man remained outside in the hall while his team lead finished the quick search of the room, closets included. Twilka stood by silently, occasionally glancing at the minor visual distortion where Khevan lurked. “Thank you for answering so promptly,” she said, as she escorted the officer to the door. For a moment, she was tempted to step outside with him and escape the conversation Khevan was determined to have, but she was angry he’d pursued her. And dangerously intrigued.
Get this over with now.

He’d gone visible again as she walked into the sleeping area. Hands on her hips, she said, “You do that often?”

He shrugged, face impassive. “A gift from the Lady. At certain levels of the Brotherhood, new abilities are earned.”

“And I’m sure you’re at a stratospheric level nowadays. I hope the goodies were worth it. How did you get in anyway?”

“The locks and other security measures in a place like this offer no challenge. And stealth is a basic skill for the D’nvannae.”

“I’m aware.” Leaning against the door, she studied him. Part of her wished she’d taken a feelgood. Being alone with him was sending shivers through her and it was hard to concentrate. Hard to breathe. Twilka reached for the anger over how he’d treated her and the emotion drove the tremors from her nerves. Have to get control of this meeting. “Hand me my robe, would you?” Taking it from his hand, she slid the soft garment onto her body and strolled to the plush armchair. Sinking onto the cushions gracefully, crossing her legs, she said, “Your Lady isn’t going to visit me too, is she?”

One-Time-Only New Year's Resolutions for Readers and Authors

Posted by: Linda Mooney
Ah, a new year, which means it's time to think up a resolution that you think you can maintain for the next twelve months.

But what if your resolution only has to be a One Time Thing?

Whether you're a reader or an author, here's a list of One Time Only New Year's Resolutions for you to contemplate. Pick one, pick a couple, or pick them all!

1.  Read a book by a new-to-you author.

2. Authors, write a book/novella/short story in a new-to-you genre.

3. If you've never tried one, buy, download, and listen to an audio book.

4. Authors, if you've never tried, have one of your books turned into an audio book.

5. Readers, buy a print book directly from an author you enjoy. Not only will they gladly autograph it for you before they ship it, in lots of cases you might receive a little swag along with it as a thank you!

6. If you don't normally leave a review for a book, do so for the next book you read. Even if it's a brief "I liked it!", it's enough.

7.  Send an email to an author telling them how much you enjoy their books. That one email will mean the world to them.

These are just a few suggestions. Feel free to add to the list if you have any more to add!

New Year's Resolution--Done!

Posted by: Nicole Luiken
For years and years now I've had the same New Year's Resolution: to have one of my books published in the new year. Therefore I'm rather tickled to have a book releasing January 2nd (yesterday) in 2017. Don't worry, I'm sure I'll come up with some other writing-related resolutions too. But for now, here it is!

BOOK THREE OF OTHERSELVES
IN TRUTH & ASHES

What she can’t remember could ruin her life.

The Mirror Worlds are but dull reflections of the True World, where magic and technology blend together…

On the True World, Belinda Loring has known from childhood that she must Bond with the son of another noble First Family. Uniting the families ensures hers will hold onto its powerful position, and so she’s always pushed down the tender feelings she has for her best friend—gorgeous, steadfast Demian, who isn’t noble.

But when the ceremonial magic goes disastrously wrong, Belinda becomes a national disgrace. Scorned as Broken, she turns to Demian for help getting revenge on the man who ruined her: the radical Malachi.

But the seeds of Malachi’s murderous plans lie buried in Belinda’s past, in the dark days of her kidnapping—a period of which she has no memory. And Demian may hold the key to recovering all that she’s lost—and saving the worlds.

Here's an excerpt from In Truth & Ashes:

Belinda stood shivering at the back of the bowl-like amphitheater, waiting for sunrise to make her grand entrance. Ellona had already gone ahead to take her seat—leaving Belinda alone with her cold feet.
Literal cold feet as well as metaphorical. Actually—she shivered—she had cold fingers and arms and a cold nose, too, because her wonderful dress was a tad skimpy, and the outdoors in late spring was chilly.
Where was her dad? Belinda bit her lip. He had to be here. This wasn’t like missing a birthday.
He was supposed to escort her down the aisle.
But he didn’t come, and the sky turned pink behind her, and the processional music swelled.
She forced her slippered feet into action, pinned a smile to her face, and, as coached by Ellona, kept her shoulders back as she walked slowly down the center aisle, between the rings of benches. She pretended that all those eyes on her didn’t make her skin crawl.
All those strangers. Any one of whom could be Malachi.
She was supposed to look straight ahead, but she searched the crowd compulsively, trying to identify any threats.
Juliet stood up and waved, defiantly. Instead of being seated near the inner ring of witnesses, Ellona had placed her mother and her second husband, Hal, about ten rows up. Belinda waved back.
A murmur went through the crowd. “Juliet…”
“…remember when…”
“…scandal…”
“…not from a First Family…”
Was that why her father had stayed away? To prevent gossip?
The amphitheater was open to the sky, and a breeze swirled around Belinda’s ear, making her shiver. Belinda?” the breeze asked.
Belinda relaxed. Only one person would contact her via an air spirit—Demian. Anyone else would have used a genie. But Demian had a rare condition that meant he couldn’t undergo the neural implants necessary for a genie. “Demian! Where are you?” she whispered, her stiff smile turning genuine.
Since she also had the long-winded talent, the breeze carried her words back to him. It was fortunate that her talent matched his. Having four otherselves didn’t mean having all of the four magical talents—long-winded, hot-blooded, silver-tongued, stone-hearted, one talent for each element and each Mirror World. In fact, she only had one, long-windedness, which allowed her to speak to air elementals.
The breeze carried his answer back after only a short lag: “On your left, seventh row.”
Belinda searched the sea of guests but couldn’t spot her friend’s face. The sheer number of people filling the large amphitheater gave her a jittery feeling in her stomach. There must be close to a thousand people here, most of them strangers. When two First Families joined, as they did today, everyone who was anyone attended.
“I’m so glad you’re here,” she whispered.
“I don’t like this guy you’re being Bonded to. He looks about as intelligent as a block of marble. His neck is the size of my waist.”
Warren was waiting for her in the center of the circular arena. He looked handsome in a formal frock coat and knee breeches in his family colors, dark blue with gold piping. Belinda studied him critically. Demian was right: Warren’s neck was a bit thick.
Her steps became slower and slower as she went down the steps to join Warren.
A choking sense of dread blocked her throat. Malachi would make his move soon.
