Got any suggestions for reading or Netflix? Sick writer seeks recommendations

Posted by: Angela Campbell
More than a month ago I started feeling a little under the weather. I had a sore throat, but I figured, meh, it’s just allergies. No big deal. It’s just a sore throat. It’ll go away. Right? Wrong. It kept getting worse, and I got so sick, I had to cope through fantasies it was all part of some genetic superpower that was kicking in and any day now I would wake up with perfect vision and super strength or, worse case scenario, as a werewolf or something. Hey, you never know. I should note I saw two doctors on separate occasions during this time, tested negative for strep and mono, and was referred to an ENT because of an abscess on one of my tonsils.

Flash forward to now, and I am getting prepared for the first real surgery of my life (wisdom teeth, excluded). My left tonsil is so infected both of those suckers have to come out. My doctor was honest and warned me the recovery is going to be…tough.. At least two weeks of misery and bed rest, maybe more. Everyone is different. Who knows? I could be fine after a week.

I am a total wimp, so I fully expect to be laid up for at least two months. Maybe six. You may never hear from me again. I don’t know. It could happen. I am that wimpy.

Either way, I am preparing for at least two weeks of bedrest and assuming I will be able to read and watch Netflix to my heart’s content. Lord knows my Kindle has enough books on it to get me through at least six months, and I’m already eyeing a few at the top — “A Hunt by Moonlight” by Shawna Reppert, “Hollywood Demon” by Jenny Schwartz, “Disruptor” by Sonya Clark, and pretty much at least one book by everyone here in the Here Be Magic group. Still, I’m open to suggestions and recommendations. Send them my way in the comments below. I like stories with vampires, werewolves, shifters, psychics, medieval characters, aliens, cats, dogs, rabbits, men, women, Elvis, zombies, superheroes, steampunk, witches, firefighters, thrillers, scary stuff, not-so-scary stuff….basically, I like everything, OK? I’m also indecisive, so tell me what to read, people.

Netflix suggestions? Send those babies my way in the comments. I also have Amazon Prime, so there’s that, too. What shows should I binge watch? I’m partial to fantasy-paranormal-supernatural shows, but again, I’ll watch anything. Last week when I was laid up at home because I felt bad I watched some show called “Amish Hauntings” that was beyond cray cray. There was this goat baby terrorizing an Amish community. I mean…what? But see? Proof I will indeed watch anything. Save me from myself. Send me GOOD suggestions.

Hopefully I will see you all on the other side…of this surgery. Not “the other side.” I mean, not yet. Not for a while. A long while. Geesh. *laughs nervously*

  1. For books: try Simone St. James. Bookstores tend to file her in mystery, but that really doesn't do her justice. Ghosts, post-WWI England with veteran heroes, strong romantic subplot... a great read.

  2. I just got done reading a vampire book called Chiaroscuro by Matthew S. Cox and did a book tour for it. Very different than the average vampire plot lines. I also just started watching Netflix again and today watched a movie called Red Light or The Red Lights. It as Robert DiNero, Sigourney Weaver, and Cillian Murphy. It's a psychological thriller movie about psychics. Get well soon....we also caught a nasty big like that and the emergency room just wrote it off as a virus and told us there was nothing they can do for us even though we were both runnin 102 temps. My boyfriend missed a week of work because his throat was so swollen he was having trouble breathing. I feel your pain!!!!

  3. It's not supernatural at all, but I'd recommend a show called Grace and Frankie on Netflix. It's a quasi-comedy starring Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. They play the wives of business partners (played by Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston) who have been having an affair with each for the last 20 years and have finally decided to ask their wives for a divorce so they can get married to each other. Watching all of these great actors tear up the scenery is such a treat.

  4. I just read The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison and it's one if the best fantasy books I've read in a long time. It has intrigue, haughty elves, airships, swords and a really adotable main character

  5. Have you seen Stranger Things yet? I really enjoyed it and am looking forward to season 2! I've also watched a lot of BBC-type police procedurals/mysteries like The Fall, Midsomer Murders, River.
