I think beginnings are more important to editors and writers, than to readers, who buy mostly on the basis of the cover and the back blurb or the author's name.Nicole Luikenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11372595852638729630noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5858828969874855814.post-85022674425483362242012-12-08T12:10:49.881-05:002012-12-08T12:10:49.881-05:00As a reader, I don't pay too much attention to...As a reader, I don't pay too much attention to the first sentence or anything. It's nice to have something intriguing there, but what sometimes happens is that the author tosses in a few terms that are either completely unfamiliar or obviously don't have their usual meanings, and then it may take pages before we find out what it's talking about. Or it starts with a "Little did I know..." (like the Barbara Hambly example), which the story doesn't always live up to. As long as it doesn't start with two pages of description, though, I'll probably keep going.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5858828969874855814.post-91161519915910169622012-12-07T23:53:36.583-05:002012-12-07T23:53:36.583-05:00And the pressure to make them 'perfect' is...And the pressure to make them 'perfect' is so intense!Nicole Luikenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11372595852638729630noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5858828969874855814.post-20178192021792862722012-12-07T23:34:13.342-05:002012-12-07T23:34:13.342-05:00Yes!
