5 Signs that Show You Need Reading Help

Have you ever been in a reading slump? Don't know what I'm talking about? It's like you haven't read anything new in a while, and no matter how hard you look, you still find nothing. Still not sure what I mean? Do any of these apply to you?

  1. Your TBR stack is huge, yet you barely glance at it, still desperate for a reading fix.
  2. You scroll through all the freebie sites daily, hoping something will spark you, yet you steer clear of all the on sale and free reads.
  3. You're re-reading books you've read a dozen times already, because they are familiar and won't let you down.
  4. You give books you really can't stand another shot, hoping this time you'll get past page 7 and find a true gem sitting under the words that make little sense.
  5.  You're turning to movies, video games, television--anything to fill your empty sense of entertainment. Yet none of it works, because you need a good book.

So what do you do to make it all better?  Short of hiring studly McStudly to carry around your TBR stack until the books start to look as good as he does, try these home remedies...

  1. Read something in a genre you don't normally read. It breaks the notion you can only read from your favorite genre and introduces you to new authors and new fiction. (How I got into urban fantasy when I'm typically a strict romance fan.)
  2. Ask some you admire what they recently read, then read that book.
  3. Go to the library. Surrounded by so much reading goodness, something is bound to jump out at you. And if you still don't like what you picked up, you didn't waste any money getting it.
  4. Count the books in your TBR stack. Say you have 20. Choose a random number between 1 and 20. Count down from the top, and that's your next read. Yes, give luck a shot.
  5. Write. You can't find anything good to read, so why not try writing what you'd like to read? If you're so frustrated by the end of this process, you'll turn to any book just to turn off that annoying remembrance of typing. If not, you might have just found you have a knack for a new career!

Happy reading!
