The top 5 favorite paranormal/fantasy tropes (survey results!)

Last month, the authors at Here Be Magic conjured up numerous giveaways to celebrate the enchantment of October, and for some of those who entered, you also weighed in on which paranormal/fantasy tropes are your favorites. You've spoken, and the results are in! We had 155 answers to the question "What's your favorite type of paranormal or fantasy story to read?" and I've tallied up the top five answers. We heard everything from harpies and witches to angels and demons. So which ones are most popular (according to our fabulous followers)?

No. 5: Ghosts | Werewolves | Magic

That's right. These three themes shared an equal number of votes to come in at fifth place. And why not? They're all awesome!
Our recommendations:
Ghosts: The Stubborn Dead by Natasha Hoar; Allegra Fairweather: Paranormal Investigator by Janni Nell
Magic: The Sevenfold Spell by Tia Nevitt; Three Wishes by Jenny Schwartz; Motor City Witch by Cindy Spencer Pape; The Goblin King by Shona Husk; Rogue's Pawn by Jeffe Kennedy
Werewolves: Hunter's Moon by Loribelle Hunt; Right Wolf, Right Time by Marie Harte; Motor City Wolf by Cindy Spencer Pape; Howling Sacrifices by J.K. Coi
Magic AND Werewolves: Pack and Coven by Jody Wallace; Quarter Square by David Bridger

No. 4: Shifters

Different from your plain ole ordinary werewolves, shifters come in all forms —panthers, cougars, bears. You name the animal, and there's probably a shifter story somewhere out there for you.
Our recommendations:
Blood of the Pride by Sheryl Nantus; Deceiving the Protector by Dee Tenorio; Mercy by Eleri Stone

No. 3: Fairies

Tinkerbell isn't just a popular Disney character, it seems. The Fae folk have enchanted readers, too! (I'll let you bash it out amongst yourselves as to whether it's faery or fairy)
Our recommendations:
Heart of the Druid Laird by Barbara Longley; Motor City Fae by Cindy Spencer Pape

No. 2: Time Travel

Almost our No. 1 answer (separated only by six votes), tales of time traveling adventurers have sparked the interest of many of our readers.
Our recommendations:
Knight of Runes by Ruth A. Casie

No. 1: Vampires

Does this surprise anyone? Didn't think so. It seems vampires continue to retain their crown as the most popular theme in paranormal/fantasy fiction.
Our recommendations:
In the Dark by PG Forte; Don't Bite the Messenger by Regan Summers; Altered Destiny by Shawna Thomas; Kiss of Death by Seleste Delaney

What do you think of these results? Agree or disagree? Let us know in the comments!

  1. FUN survey results! As far as shifters, let's not forget my Sobek the Crocodile God in PRIESTESS OF THE NILE (some shameless promo here but he is a pretty different kind of shifter, no?)...

  3. Great recommendations, Angela! It's not obvious from the title or the description, but THE DEVIL'S GARDEN is another one with magic if you're looking to add more to your TBR piles. ;) #shamelesspromocopycat
