Best Fall Sci-fi and Fantasy Shows on TV

It's that time of year again - Halloween candy, falling leaves, football, the kids are back in school and all of the new shows are starting up again on TV. There's a lot of great science fiction and fantasy this year. Here's what I've been watching...

Dr. Who

I’m a latecomer to this series. Really, really late. My aunt used to watch the old curly-haired scarf-wearing Dr. Who and as a child I thought that was as bizarre as her infatuation with Remington Steele and Buck Rogers. Sooo…I never gave it a try until this summer when my kids discovered the Doctor on Netflix.
Which led to me finding things like this around the house...

And to my aunt posting stuff like this on my FB wall…

I’ve heard longtime viewers didn’t like this last season as much but as a new watcher, I loved it. And I’m heartbroken over the ending.

Revolution

A new one. I was disappointed in the first episode. Stilted dialogue. Katniss heroine. (My secret-I don’t like Katniss. Don’t tell my kids, ’kay?) The over-the-top fight scenes. I think they went too far in trying to appeal to the Hunger Games/Twilight crowd. Idiot bumbling adults getting saved by their selfless, idealistic, wise teenagers. I know that’s a big running theme in a lot of YA stuff but it just doesn’t appeal to me.
The third episode dragged me back in but I’m this close to jumping.

Fringe

Fringe! How do I love thee? Let me count the ways…
Strong female characters.
Walter. Best mad scientist ever.
Twisty and interesting plots.
Great dialogue.
Intelligent science fiction with a heart and a sense of humor.
And if that doesn't convince you, maybe this will...

Once Upon a Time

This story moves. The pacing is incredible. There's never a stagnant story line.
Good acting. Good writing. I love that they’re not afraid to explore the dark side to the fairy tales they’ve based the series on. While I’m still kind of upset that they killed the sheriff last season, I like that they take risks. It keeps me watching.

What are your favorites?

  1. I'm not into Dr. Who (though I've tried a couple of times), but I love both Fringe and Once Upon a Time.

As for Revolution, I'm still undecided. (I've only watched the first two episodes) I love the Blackout concept--it reminds me of Dies the Fire by S.M. Stirling--but haven't yet been sold on the characters.

Anybody else notice that Capt. Tom Neville is played by Giancarlo Esposito who also plays Sidney Glass/Magic Mirror on Once Upon a Time?

  2. I didn't! How did I not notice that?

  3. Once Upon a Time is so good.I love all the twists they put on classic fairy tales. Robert Carlyle blows my mind every time he comes on screen.

I'm also a diehard Dr Who fan and feeling quite eh about Revolution. I was so ready to love that show, but it's not clicking for me. It's almost too formulaic.

I'm also eagerly awaiting The Walking Dead, the return of Game of Thrones and my favorite guilty pleasure, The Vampire Diaries.

Grimm is solid, but hasn't won my heart in quite the same way OUAT did.

    True Blood. Enough said.<3

  4. Supernatural is always my favorite, but I also love Once Upon a Time. I also can't wait for The Walking Dead and The Vampire Diaries (I have the mindset of a teen, I guess). I like Grimm too, but can never seem to find the time to catch up on the episodes I've missed. :)

  7. Doctor Who and Once Upon a Time are the two shows I've kept track of. I won't lie, the season finale of Doctor Who left me in tears.

  8. It still makes me sad just thinking about it. I wish the next season started right away.
