Paranormal - Do You Believe?

People often ask me whether I believe in the paranormal. The answer is yes and no. Let me explain.

I write about mythical creatures and, much as I’d like to believe in fairies, mermaids etc, I don’t really think they exist. Mind you I’d be happy to be proved wrong.

As for ghosts, I’m not sure. Certainly there are places that feel haunted. I once stayed in an old hotel that had a strange atmosphere. Later I learned that several workers had been killed during construction of the building. Then there’s Port Arthur, an old penal settlement in Tasmania. Some of the former cells have a seriously creepy atmosphere as does the school house.

But the paranormal isn’t limited to ghosts and mythical creatures. I’m very open to believing in things like telepathy and clairvoyance. My grandmother-in-law had premonitions. Like the time she knew her daughter was going to have a horse-riding accident and begged her not to ride that day. How often do teenage girls listen to their mothers? Yep, daughter was thrown. Luckily her injuries weren’t too serious.

And then there was the time my grandmother-in-law entered hospital for a routine operation. She was fit and much too young to die but she predicted she would die while in hospital. She survived the operation but afterward she got an infection and passed away.

My husband has inherited her ability to some degree. If ever he gets a “gut feeling” about anything. I take notice. He’s usually right.

Have you had any paranormal experiences? I’d love to hear about them.

  1. Yes - I hesitate to admit that I have experienced some paranormal experiences...I have often had ESP dreams about the future. A bit unsettling...

  2. That's so cool! Although if they were unsettling maybe not so cool.

  3. ESP dreams about the future sounds shivery. I dream vivid. I'd hate to dream true.

And while I don't believe in ghosts...I have to agree that some places have an atmosphere.

Has anyone else noticed how when you start thinking of a friend you haven't spoken to in ages, within a couple of days they phone/email you? or it happens vice versa.

  5. I don't have any good ghost stories and I've never actually seen a werewolf or a mermaid. I'm the same as you with ESP - I think there's something to it but I don't really have any theories about how or why it might work.

  6. Wonderful post! I experienced/ saw a ghost for the first time while in Scotland. I think ghosts are real and so are psychic abilities of various types. But I don't believe in other mythical creatures, although I love writing about them! :)

  7. Janni, maybe that ESP thinking about friends before they contact you is an Aussie thing? Vast distances, ancient land. Who knows what lurks in the minds of Aussie authors?

  8. As far as the ghosties go, I've had some pretty weird experiences. Once, I dreamed my father, who had passed away the previous year, warned me to get my house ready. The next day, I was standing in front of the mirror in my bathroom, when a jar of moisturizer flew off a shelf and bounced off the wall behind me. For real. Talk about freaked out! That night we had a really bad storm with gale force wind. A huge elm tree in back missed my bedroom my mere centimeters. I swear that's what my dad was trying to warn me about. Great topic, by the way.

  9. My grandmother and her sisters had esp. Granny always knew when someone she cared for was hurt, and her sister knew when she was going to die. She told her husband, laid out the music for the service and wrote directions for what she wanted for the funeral.
I've had my name in a few drawings for things, and right before they announce the name, I've gotten rush of feeling and knew it was my name that would be called. Anyone experience that?

  10. Well, my sister is a practicing, professional psychic and she tells people things that are so balls on accuarate it's skeery. So the short answer is yes. I believe in certain aspects of paranormal activity. Also, if you ask my husband, he would tell you I control the universe with my mind, lmao! Like the day I called out from work because I *knew* Angela James was going to call me. And she did. I almost shite meself. But I don't call it paranormal. I just call it manifesting. O_O

  11. Barbara, I've had that feeling about knowing you were going to win something just before the draw. It's happened to me a few times. Not that I claim any other ESP powers.
